POR VICE PRESIDENT,

OP INDIANA.
FOR CONGRESS—NINTH DISTRICT
HON. EMORY SPEER,
. OF CLARK..
Somehow we are
was a pivotal State.
sorry InJiina
Hon. B. H. Hill says he was not
surprised at the result of the elections
of Tuesday. Of course not;
was Mr. Hill ever surprised ?
when
But hold! We carried West Vir
ginia. True. If you have your hew-
gag convenient, you may sound it;
but let it be soil and low.
Tiiev are charging the defeat in
Indiana to the personal unpopularity
of English. Why, in the name of all
that is democratic, didn’t they find
that'out in the Cincinnati convention.
Tiie republican national executive
committee has decided to contest the
states r.f Virgini i, North Caroliua and
Florida. It is time for Virginia to
stop her toolishness and come down
.to her knitting.
The National Democratic Execu
tive Committee has issued an addiess
to the people. Very good ; hut what
the democratic party wants now, is
more votes. Unfortunately the ad 1
dress does not tell where we are going
to get them.
It is said that there was a lack of
democratic organization in Indiana.
Perhaps the Indiana democrats didn't
know the election was coming off
before next year. We take the liberty
of suggesting that they proceed to
organize for an effort in November.
The election in November is not
lost, because Indiana went against us.
That state may be redeemed in No
vember. The republicans cannot
again concentrate such torces to carry
it, lor then the fight will be all along
the line. The votes which were so
freely bought this time may not
stick; and the disaster which has
come to the Democrats may nerve
them to renewed strength, and ud'
paralleled endeavor. That which has
seemed to dart all our hopes to the
ground, may prove to be the necessary
stimulus to that eternal effort which
is the price of victory.
But even if Indiana is not redeem
ed, there arc other slates which we
are likely to carry, and which, com
bined with New York and the Soutli.
will bring success to the democracy.
There are Connecticut, New Jersey,
California,* Oregon, Nevada, and
possibly New Hampshire. The chance
is goed for enough of these to give
the necessary electoral votes to Han
cock and English. Never despair,
all hope is not lost.

Some of the disappointed papers
still insist that the intellect, the re
spectability and the white people of
Georgia voted for Norwood. Well,
then, what a tremendous company of
idiots, knaves and negroes there are
in Georgia—to be sure.
While danger threatens the cause,
the democrats of New York city are
squabbling over the division of the

We are a little carious says the St.
Louis Republican, to see wbat views
the republican preu will take of the
Georgia election. They declared the
50,000 democratic majority in Ala
bama was the product of intimidation,
and the 40,000 democratic majority
in Arkansas the product of fraud. But
here is a democratic majority in Geom
gia still greater than either of the
others—60,000 to 75,000. What is
it the product of? Not intimidation,
for them was no republ'can ticket iu
the Geld, and the negro vote was as
siduously solicited and sought by both
the democratic tactions—the regular
party, under Colquitt^md the bolt,
era, under Norwood. As the repub
licans bad no ticket in the field, their
true tactics was to support the bolters,
with the purpose of inflicting a defeat
upon the regular democracy. Whether
they did this or not we cannot tell;
probably they divided their votes be
tween the two factions. It is certain
that there was no intimidation; there
was not even the pretence of intimi
dation. They were not only allowed
to vote as they pleased, but were in
vited and encouraged to vote by the
hostile partisans of Colquitt and Nor
wood. But for all this, Colquitt is
said to be elected by 50,000 majority,
and the other regular democratic
nominees for State officers by 75,000
majority. It, as has been claimed, the
republicans of Georgia have a majority
of votes, and need only a fair election
to show it, why did they not, with
the aid of the Norwood * bolters, and
with the advantage ol a perfectly fair
canvass and election, beat the Colquitt
ticket ?
