<v Tuesday, December 30, 1880. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Serious Accident. Mrs. McMillan, who lives in the lower part of the citj, had an unfort, uunie fall, Tuesday evening, which resulted in a dislocation of one of her hips. Her injury is necessarily very painful. Deaths. Mr. Obadiah Echols, of Clarke oounty, who lived a few miles from Athens, died last Friday. Mrs. Crawford, of Athens, died last Saturday, and was buried from St. Mary’s Episcopal church last Sun day. A Change In the Watchman. There has been a change in the status of the Southern Watchman. The property, which belongs to the estate of the late Col. J. H. Christy, has been leased by Messrs. E. J. Christy and Walter E. Stevens. The former has had control of the busU ness management of the Watchman since the death of his father ; and Mr. Stevens has been its editor for some time past. The old Watchman will start out with the vigor of renewed youth, under the new management, and we doubt not will increase in prosperity and usefulness. We wish all parties interested the largest suc cess under the new regime. The Fast Malt. By the fast mail schedule which was begun last Snnday, the people of Ath ens can got, a’lont twelve o’clock, the New York papers of the preceding day. The Northeastern cannot accommos date itself to the fast train, because it is obliged to connect with the regular passenger trains on the Air-Line. It was supposed at cue time, that the new fast train would substitute oue of the two pa-ssnger trains now run ning ; but it docs not ; it runs in ad dition to them; and .as the regular passenger trains are the principal and most important ones, the Northeastern must run the same schedule as here tofore. The fast train consists of an engine, a mail car, a combination baggage and passenger car, and a sleeping car. There are only a few passengers at present, but in the course of a short time, it is expected that the passengers will increase, and it will be made regular passenger and mail train. As it is, the mail which leaves New York at 4:30 this morning will reach Athens at 11:80 to morrow morning Hon. Emory Speer. This gentleman left for Washing* ton a few days ago. Our city and county have reason to be proud ot their distinguished young son. His public career lias beeit very brilliant- ah almost unbroken series of triumphs. At soHcitor-geneial of this judicial oirctritphe was remarkably successful and his prosecution of the criminals that, were arraigned befoi e his court, yras sq uuijekmly effectual that he in reality became what is expressed by that hackneyed phrase “a terror to evil-doers.’’ In 1877'he was defeated for Con gress by 1,700 majority. In 1878 he was elected by a bare majority of 2*25; and in 1880 he turned the ma jority of 1,700 against him three years before, into a grand triumph of over 4,000 majority in bis favor. If we are not mistaken, he received the largest vote of any congressional candidate in ■Georgia.:-. Backed-by such a triumphant pop. v uldrendofsement, he goes confidently to his post of duty, full of the proud ambition to deserve, by fidelity and ‘devotion, the high trust so flatteringly reposed iu him. He is faithful and be is competent, and a long career of usefulness and of honor lies before him, if his life is spared. The Ninth , is honored in her representative. SHALL TALK. Treats are over, boys. Town la'k—the mud. Horses with the epizootic by no ■nouns enjoy this weather. The sloppy south is the present name. A brick yard on Bread street could be run with profit. Perhaps we’d be in order to say “the agony is over.” Maybe the new mayor and council will take a look at the side-walks. We were asked who was Hector Berlioz. Wo know, but who else dees? The terrific ferocity of Haman’s vi-age, caused many children to wilt. We had a most hilarious election. Hilarious don’t mean muddy. W ood is going higher and higher. In fact most of it is going op the chim ney. Bather more excitement over the mayor’s election than the president’s. How like New York we are ! Nothing gives so much importance to the average darkey as an election —except perhaps a funeral. The University Clothing Emporium is selling out its large and tine stock at cost. We were asked if this is the last election this year. Trqe, but we have another thirty days from us. The streets will have to be re-nttm- bered, they have all run into oue, this spell. The soiree dansanie at Miss Glov er’s will be |tost|)Oned until the elite can arrive Lien chausse. Dr. H. H. Carlton’s speech in the Seagiavcs case was much compli mented. Persons indulging in equestrian ex ercise bring home real estate enough to start a jiotato patch. The Augusta Ne*-s says: “ Some Athens young men think tire shortest way Irom that city to Washington, Wilkes, is via Augusta.’’ Vice-President Arthur has two pretty daughters. A man with two pretty daughters cannot 1 e wholly vile. James S. Hamilton, Jr., formerly of Athens, but now a leading planter of Columbia county, has been in 'town a few days, or probably, we should say, on the Bill —Augusta Scics. The Augusta News says: “ Mr. B A. Stovall, of Athens, is now in the city. He has been taking heavy or ders during the season for the Georgia Chemical Works in Augusta, for which popular company he is travel ing.” ..'fefirfuWt (Teething remedies, _ in Violence: nmneed gh ii Powders) the disease lreg-.m to ahfie, the child to rest hotter tnah he had done for month*,'his appretite to re turn, and soon his rosy cheeks gave joy tohisingther’s ./ieurti , . „ Very rspecl fully, . MBS. GEN. S. G. Nov.lfi-Wlm Clarke Suiierior Court. Thu argument in the Seagr.ives case ended about nine o’clock Monday night. Tlte jury retired, and in about two hours returned with their verdict, which was: Guilty of voluntary man slaughter. As stated in yesterday’s paper, the main argument of the de fense was that the wound which Sea- graves gave Royal was not such a one as would cause his death, that the death resulted from his own impru dent conduct. There was no attempt to deny the facts alleged as to the wounding ; but it was maintained that Royal would have recovered from the wound if he had taken proper care of himself. Yesterday morning, the certiorari in the caso-of A. W. Vest vs. Toom- cr, was sustained. Then the judge proceeded to sentence tho prisoners who had been found guilty. James Seagravcs, guilty of voluntary man slaughter; sentenced to twelve years in the penitential y. James Ilanscn, colored, guilty ot assault with intent to murder, on Mr. Spencer’s little daughter ; sentenced to nine years in he penitentiary. Loyd Long, for simp’e larceny, was sentenced to six months in the county chaingang. The court then adjourned till the first Monday in January. *' ’' * A Good Work. * Years and years ago,—we can’t tell exactly when—Mr. Henry Brit tain set out that row of fine oaks by tho Baptist church. There is proba bly not a finer row in the city. Mr. Brittain is now old and feeble, and nearly trt the end of his life’s journey ; hnt^the baits he planted are in their prime and will fionrisb, cd ornam< nt and a blessing, long after ho has left this earth. By lit* way, did you ever think that very few people have the proper respect lor a tree. A tree is not sentient being, but it is ibe next thing - to it, and really some trees are better —much better—than some men. A tree th.1t stantls straight upright—and tali of diom stand that way unless they have been warped by some extrinsic cause ; that “ brings forth his fruit in his'sfsspfthat lights, against the storm-wind, and gives its aid to the zephyr; sucb a tree is entitled to much mete respect than many a spec imen of the. genus homo, who goes growling through the world, caring only for himsAlf, acting as if the world * was made for hira only—as entirely devoid afBeduty as of beneficence.. It is painful to see the'carelessness with which some people tell or mu tilate trees. Why, to. cut down a good tree seems little -less than murder. • Think long it’ has taken to quire its present proportions; think how long -it' will be before iu place can be supplied. He who destroys a good tree *Bj a,mat wrong. On tho other hand, he who causes one to -mp where win -grew before, j ’‘‘public benefactor.*'"Who can mea the amount of good that has been done and will bedtofe by those trees that v-Sfrlhritfain.»lfpUd?; Queen Esther. The weather was fearful, as usual. Quite a large audience, however, were in altenda: ce,' and we do not h&itate to say that we were much surprised at the unusually fine manner io which this difficult cantata was rendcred- Atnid sucb a shower of stars it wott'd be invidious to particularize- Those who met with the greatest share of approbation and applause were Zcresh and Human. We take, pleasure .in mentioning the excellent manner in which their sevetal parts were ren dered by the Queen and Prophetess, and Mordecai’s sister. It is much to be regretted that the bad weather prevented many from seeing this fine performance, nod we hope they may be induced to repeat the performance. All praise is due Prof. McIntosh. From Oconee County. In the thrilling language of a Car- roll comity freeman, tvo exclaim, let it rain! It is rumored that Messrs. Isaac Lowe and Pink Price are going to Athena to make it their future home. The a'-erage freedmao in this coun ty, is busy discussing the qualification- necessary for au efficient Ordinary. ; As a result of the very disagreeable w eather, which we have been having recently there is yet much cotton to be picked, and bnt little eraio hgs been sowed. The re|>orts which come to tis from Atlanta, concerning our representa tive, Hon. W. W. Price, are altogether gratifying to his many friends, and not at all disagreeable to those who opposed his election. May lie continue ‘faithful to the end Tor if he does, his re- election is as certain as that uickcl will bring a ginger cake. When a man rides through thu mud and rain far into Walton county, on such a day ns last Saturday, we think he means business, and that is exactly what Mr. A1 Jackson did. ‘ Uncle’ Doctor Elder is a firm be liever in Flagg’s liver pads, and jolly uncle Nathan Cook just kuows ti e galvanic batteries will cure all the ills flesh is heir to. Still the world wags! Mr. Andrew Price has Met the con tact’ to build a nice residence not far from High Shoals to Mr. McGinty of Athens. It was anciently remarked that, ‘ it is not good tor man to be alone,’ and it would sectn that Andrew was somewhat of the same opinion. The other day Mr. James Jackson had his gin house, containing nine bales of cotton, destroyed by fire, caused by a spark lrom the engine. Mr. Jackson’s loss is considerable. Through the Advance we learu that Mr. J. A. Perdue desires to lease his farm to some person w ho can run it without his aid. Mr. P. we judge has ;ood little fartu, as he ntado 4 eight bales of cotton and corn enough to do him’ to the hand. His farm is con venient to market and in a good neighborhood. Let some enterprising person apply early for fear he will be too late. Mr. James Woodis, aged 19, and Miss Emma Gordon, aged 15, were married on the lGth inst., and have gone to hou-e kteping. Mr. W. hav ing leased Mr. A. G. Eider’s farm. There is much injbeing in time. A Baptist church was organized in \Y T ntkin*ville last Saturday, with Rev. Mr. Bernard, of Athens, as pastor, Rev. C. D. Campbell, ot Athens, act ing as moderator. The organization, in the main, is composed of good ma terial, and although there are hut Sew members, the outlook is encouraging. The Athens Baptists, through Mr. Campbell, presented them with a su perb Bible. In consequence of the annual, elec tions we are still in the ‘gnU of bitter* fekss.* The next that is to hfflict us i* the election of county officers. ~ So far as I am informed, ; Mr. J. W. Johnson, our present efficient Clerkof the Su perior Court, will not have an oppos uent, but both the Sheriff and Ordi nary, will be opposed—tlte former by Mr. James Lowe and the latter by Mr B. E. Thrasher, Esq. It is not a bad idea to ‘let well enough alone,’ sometimes. _ - What 8eemsto be a determined effort on the pant of some of our citi zens to adorn (?) all the cross-roads with grog shops is creating quite a temperance bootn, and a petition will be raised memorializing the General Arscntbly to prohibit the sale and manufacture of. spirituous and malt liquors in this oounty. Let all men who fear God and love their nice sign this petition. Our Own conviction is if it is-right to.sell whisky, the suite ought not to require a man to pay lii cetile to do what is not wrong, and if it is wrong to sell it, the stale ought not to license a man to do what is not right.
