LOCAL IM’^LLIGENCE.
Our Ulgbtvays.
A slight lull in the 6torm that has
Wen iMntring this country for 'the
past two moot ns, affor.le.l an oppor
limit) to make the tour of the city
and look into the coudilion of our
streets. By way of precaution, we
look with ua an umbrella, and stop*
ping at a lawyer’s office on Broad at.,
made our will preparatory to setting
out, ou a (ianjicroua expedition. By
diaE of some hard strokes we managed
to swim across Broad at., at Bloomfield
& Sanford’s corner, and struck out for
the Georgia depot.
Ocon< e street, to say the least, is
not in prime condition; the mud in
some places is too deep for anything
like a fair estimation ; and we have
been told that a certain liquor place
on the street has about suspended op
erations because of lack of patronage,
consequent on so much mud. The
hills ou both sides the river are about
as difficult oi access as the Alps in
mid-winter; and ’die ’bus men say the
standing inquiry of passengers is: “On
your roads ov6r get any worse.”
Thomas slieet from Broad to Coop-
tcr’a stables reminds one very much of
ploughed land after a week’s rain; and
it is strange how draymen iuduce their
teams to pull through the deep mud
which fills the street. Clayton street
from Thomas to Lumpkin is a mass
of mud ten iuohes deep and holes
whose depth varies from two feet to
fourteen and a half.
In front of the Clinsrd House the
prospect is indeed fine—so cheering
that pedestrians walk ou the top of
cotton bales to obtain a better view.
Lumpkin street, from Clayton to Haw
cock avenue, is decidedly the worst
place in the city—its superiority is ac
knowledged by all.
College avenue, down to the North
Eastern depot, has the appearance of
the roads in Germany during the
Franco-German war after the passage
of the artillery. When we were in
that country we made a mental note
that those roads were very bad. Hull
street from the depot to Broad has a
decidedly mushy appearance, and in
the forcible phraseology of a drayman
is “wet enough to float a dead mule.’’
Hancock avenue, from the Presby
terian church to the Lucy Cobb Ins
stitute, looks as if McGinty’s brick
yard force had been at work on it for
a week or two; and it is with pain wa
make this anouucement, since it.was
the promenade selected for the new
city council.
Prince avri.ue in front of the court
house seems to have been at law lor
some time, and near its intersection
with the Jefferson road is well nigh
impassable. Cobb street from aider-
man Talroadge’s to the residence of
Mr. Miss, is in an exceedingly bad
condition, and in front of Maj. Cobb’s,
wagons have made a highway of the
side walk
Milledgc avenue, from Hill to
“States Rights street,” is very muddy,
but does not set m to have many holes.
Broad from Millelge avenue to its
end is in a bad way, and its salvation
depends on the sunlight. The tan
yard hill—well, it is not like a turn
pike, and the question of placing a
dummy engine ou top the hill to help
draw up teams is being agitated.
Our sidewalks are no better than
the streets—indeed they are some
worse. We know a gentleman who
climbs seven fences in coming down
town, and whose path leads him by
the stables and kitchens of other men.
Of course he ought not to do it. The
crossthgt, at least the smaller por
tion's, lave floated away ; the others
are bid under deep coatings oi mud';
and we have heard of several freemen
who endeavot «*l to- exercise the right
of suflrage the other day, prevented
from doing so by their inability to
reach the polls.
If the weather breaks, which at
these writings it promises to do, we
may look for better highways. When
it does, the street force will have
plenty to do in repairing the ravages
of the storm. The new member from
. the second ward will confer, 5 a favor
upon many of his fellow citizens] if be
will have th<- cro-sitigs about the post-
cflic • corner raised several feet.
We -upp s* the reason for this con
dition of afLirs is well kn-wn ; in fact
it has been mentioned in these column 8
several times lately ihale the weither
has been unprecedented.

From C. D. McCukry, Newton

a great suffer from Spasmodic Croup,

Croup Preventive, which has most
miraculously cured him. I find it
equally beneficial in all cases of
Coughs. I consider it a blessing

it in their houses.
Try Smith’s Scrofula Syrup for
