THE WIDE, WIDE WORLD, AND WHAT ITS
PEOPLE ABE DOING IN IT.
JUttrrs of Note Briefly Reported from al
Parts.
Mr. H. I. Kimball is waking up
the cities on the subjeot of the At*
lanta Exposition, nn<I is receiving
fluttering encouragement. Louisville
was visited Saturday and several
thousand dollars secured in subscrip
tions. The prospect promises big
tilings for this enterprise.
Tiik verdict of the jury in the case
of Cash for killing Shannon in S. C.,
seems to have been in direct contra
vention ol the evidence and the
charge of the court. Wouldn’t it be
well for the investigating committee
at Albany, N. Y., to transfer its la
bors to Darlington ?
President Garfield held a re
ception at Long Branch Saturday, and
Grant, it seems, overcame his bash,
fulness enough to run in, shako hands
with the president and leave again in
three minutes. This is what might be
called a coup d'etat. The next thing
we hear of will he a long conference
and then—what ?
Senator Hill has been interviewed
by Mr. Frank A. Burr, of the Phila
delphia Press, on the subject of Jeff.
Davis’ book. Mr. Hill knows a good
deal and yet don’t know very much
either. He also, takes occasion to be
very gentle in his remarks about ad
parties mentioned and don’t say any*
thing to hurt feelings.
The grave of Col. R. A. Alston at
Decatur, was decorated on Saturday
by a large number ot colored people
who assembled for that purpose.
They seem to cherish the memory of
Mr. Alston with peculiar affection on
account of his efforts to abolish the
chain-gang system, and for his kind •
ness on all occasions to the race in
which he felt such an unselfish in
terest.
Tub Atlanta reporters don’t seem
to have a fair chance to say anything
about Gen. Gordon unless it is en*
tircly favorable. The General has a
belligerent son who makes them walk
a chalk line. Sometime ago the illus
trious Marcellus, dared to offend this
noble scion and was publicly frailed.
Now Sieve Poelell has written a piece
which lie had to swallow because Gor
don, J r. didn't like it, Venly, this is
interfering with the freedom of the
press.
The situation at Albany remains
unchanged,at least, au election of sen
ators seems no nearer, than when the
balloting first began. Those republi
cans who do not act with either the
stalwarts or half breeds held a caucus.
Only eleven were present but they de
termined to remain firm and form the
nucleus of a party that would com
promise on one stalwart and one half
breed. The democrats remain united
for their candidates and an adjourn
ment.
The half breed caucus determined
to tlo all they could to prevent ad
journment.
The stalwarts at a conference de
cided to secure an adjournment,
Conkling advised it in a speech. They
desire to appeal to the people in the
fall elections.
The half-breeds deny that an ad
journment can lie had, as they hold
the bahuce of power.
It is stated that the democrats are
dividing into Tildeu men and Kelly
men, the former in favor of adjourn'
iug and the latter desirous of contin
uing until an election is had.
The voting developed nothing new
The bribery investigation proceeds.
Tombstone, Arizona, has been al

That philanthropic gentleman, Mr.
Geo. 1. Seney of New York has
supplemented his $50,000 donation to
Wesloyan Female College at Macon
with $20,000 more, making $70,000
iu all. At the recent commences
ment the board of trustees accepted
a plan of a building which would
cost $40,000 dollars, $15,000 of which
was to be raised in Georgia.
This would liave necessitated the
postponement of the work until next
year, Hearing of it, Mr. Seney
generously supplied; the deficiency,
and bids the trustees proceed with
the work.
This gives to Macon, in the near
future, the finest college building in
the south.
All the friends of the college will
rejoice at this good fortune and praise
the princely gentleman whose gener
osity has been so magnificent.
EMORY SPEER AND COMMISSIONER RAIIM.
Mr. Speer Calls for Papers.
It will be remembered that a few
djtys ago, according to the newspapers,
Mr. Green B. Baum, Commissioner
of Internal Revenue made some very
grave charges against Hon. Emory
Speer—among other things, accusing
him of upholding disobedience to the
revenue laws, in his district, and in
fnct, saying that be had sought politi
cal advancement by “standing in with
the moonshiners” and encouraging
them in their disobedience to the laws.
•Of course Mr. Speer could not rest
quietly nnder charges of such gravity;
neither could be take up weapons
against newspaper report-. He has
called upon Mr. Secretary Windom,
however, for any commnnications
which Mr. Ranm may have made
conoerning him. Mr. Windom, of
course, cannot decline this request,
and when Mr. Speer is made acquaint’
ed authoritatively with Mr: Ranm’s
course towards him'be will take what
ever action shall seem proper. We
predict, if the newspaper reports about
Mr. Raam’s conduct are true, that he
will rue the day he ever went out of
Jite way to slander Emory Speer..
