The highest and most characteristic glory of earthly beauty is to make us aspire to a heavenly one; and a woman is great in proportion to the ideai she suggests. An exahanga paper gives the following ‘‘advice for the times” : Live temperately—go to church —love all the pretty girls—marry one of them— iiv- li:*e a man, and die like a Christian. If you wish to learn all your defects quarrel with your best friend, ana you will be surprised to find what a villian you are even in the estima tion of a friend. Women *»e the South—The Richmond Dis patch makes the following comment on the patri- i ’ism and si-lf sacrifice by which the Women of the South emulate the conduct of their female an- < *tors of the Revolution : A widow lady of dies terfie-d, S. C., has sent her son. her sole support, to the service of the State. This is akin to the *:. : ri» of Mrs Lewis, (so handsomely alluded t*> ■ v Hon. J.remiah Moiton in his thrilling and -i .ml* speech at the Floyd Banquet,) who, in the K- volntion smii her three sons to resist the at tempt of Tarlton tocro*s the Bhie Ridge, telling them if hr crossed that mountain, never to see tier face again. This incident led io Washington’s famous exclamation, in the darkest hour of the rev olution, “Give me but a banner, and let me plant it on the mountains of West Augusta, and I will vet save the independence of the country.” And with such a spirit still alive among the women of the South, who doubts that the Cause of Inde pendence and Liberty will always be secured. Every young lady would fain be a sort of Mec ca of beauty, or Medina of charms, for young men. ardent devotei s of love, to make tbeir pil grimage to. Pi rfirlhi Cool —A waggish friend ol ours tells the following, which we do not recollect to have seen in print: A certain men whom we will call M. was noted for hia pos ssiug great courage and presence of ni ud. and the crossest wife in the neighborhood. The scrofu lous taint is variously caused by mercurial disease, low living, disordered or unhealthy food, impure air, tilth and filthy habits, the depressing vices, anil, above all, by the venereal infection. What ever he its origin, it is hereditary in the constitu tion, descending “ from parents to children unto tin- third and fourth generation;” indeed, it set-ins to be the rod of Him who says. “ I will visit the iniquities ofthe fathers upon their children." Its effects commence l*v deposition from the blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in the lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termed tuber cles ; in the glands, swelling* ; and on the surface, eruptions or sore*. This foul corruption, which genders in the blood, depresses the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitution.* not only suffer from | scrofulous complaints, but they have far less power to withstand the attacks of other diseases; con sequently, vast numbers peridi 1 y disorders which, j although not scrofulous in their nature, are still ien- j ilered fatal by this taint in the system. Most of j the consumption which decimates thu human family j has its origin directly in tHi- scrofulous contamina- ! tion ; and many destructive diseases of the liver, | kidneys, brain, and, indeed, of ail the or„:i::.~, arise j from or are aggravat* u by the same cause. One quarter of all our people arc scrofulous; their persons are invaded by this lurking infection, and their health is undermined by it. To cleanse it from the system we must renovate the blood by an alterative medicine, an:! invigorate it by healthy food and exercise. Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla, the most effectual remedy which the medical skill of our times can devise for this every where pre vailing and fatal malady. It is combined lrom the most active remedial* that have been discovered for the expurgation of this foul disorder from the blood, and the rescue of the system from its destructive consequences. Hence it should be employed for the cure of not only scrofula, but also those other affections which ari-e from it, such as Eruptive and Sjkik Disuasis, St. Anthony's Fiitr, Rose, or KuY.-irr.t.As, Pimples, Pcstit.i*, Blotches, Blains and Boils, Tumors, 3'ettt.r ar.d Salt Rheum, Scald IIf.ad, It;noworm. A smaller size of this Plow, (one horse) thinner in the sole and more dart-like in its figure, is an admirable implement for cultivating crops, and will do the work of more than forty men with hoes. With the corn crop, this tool may run close alongside the corn, and to the full depth of twelve inches when the corn is but three inches high, and before the roots occupy the space be tween tho rows : this will lift the soil, move every corn plant with the soil, and for so slight a dis tance as not to separate the particles from the roots, yet so completely loosening the mass that the plant may be picked up with the fingers. This is more thorough cultivation than can be obtained by one hundred hoeings, leaving the soil in bet ter tilth and cutting of no roots. More than twenty thousand of these Plows were sold last year.
