SOUTHERN FEDERAL USiOg. PH ill edgcville, 6a. A Bole in the Pocket. MONTHLY CITATIONS. A great many men have a hole in the pocket, and so lose all the little change they put in it. And the worst of it is, the}- do not know it—if they did, they could mend up the hole, and so put an end to the loss. Every day arc mums a few dimes, and they wonder how they come so short. When the bills are to be paid, they cannot imagine how they come to be so short of change. At the end of the year, they are surprised to find so poor a footing up. They work hard, rack their hrains on plans, and still they do not get ahead much. Bills accumulate, income diminishes, and still they do not discover the hole in the pocket. One mau has bad fences, gates and barns. The cattle, break through every now and then and destroy crops, and he occupies time in driving them out. J he pigs creep through the holes. The hor ses get away. The boys and men, and servants and dogs are kept on the run aiie v roguish cows and jumping horses and climbing hogs. The stock becoms uneasy and docs not thrive. The crops are injured- The fences are broken down. Time is consumed. The trouble is, that man has a hole in his pocket. One man has no sheds, nor barns, nor grana rics : nor tool houses. His grain is much injured and wasted. The rats eat Lis corn, and the damp weather moulds it.— II is potatoes rot. ilis pumpkins are des- troved. His fruit does him but littlegood. Ilis tools are rotted and rusted in the open weather. His stock is chilled and sMtnted for want of shelter. His trouble is a lode in his pocket, out of which slip all his prof its, with much of the fruits of his hard la bor. One man has p«»or plows of the senile stamp of his ancestors. He can’t afford a modern, plow. He don’t believe in sub- eoiling. Draining i • nonsense of scientific fools. Drills arc a humbug. Deep plow ing would spoil the land. So be plows and sows as his grandfailier did. On the worn out soil of his venerable ances tors. He has n hole in his pocket, and will have it till he wakes up to the impor tance of good tools and good culture of himself and soil. One man don’t take a paper; can’t afford it; has no time to read; don’t believe in book fanning; likes the old ways best; de- liiesall the stories lie has heard front rumor, about large cattle and crops and profits; does mu believe in new notions. For lor- tv vears lie lias planted bis coru on tiie same ground; sown wheat in the same field pastured the same land. “He lias heard • d rotation of eiops, hut docs not know what it means, nor cares to know. A had hole has this man in his pocket. And who hasn't got a hole in his pocket? Reader, haven.t you? Look and see. is there not some way in which you let slip the dimes you might better save; some way in which you waste time and strength and mind.' If ao, then you have a hole in vour pocket. Indeed, many a man’s pock et is iike a sieve. Whose pocket is a treas ury. safe and sure?— Valley Farmer. From the N. Y. Times. The Irrepressible Conti let Began. We copy in another column a letter from Washington in the Evening Post, which merits the attention of all who prize the integrity of the Republican Party above the gratification of selfish and malignant faction. It relates to the intrigues wlrch have been for sometime on foot to diive Crov. Seward from Mr. Lincoln’s Cabinet, and sets forth, with great clearness and force, the motives of those engaged in it, and the same disastrous results which would follow their success. The fact is that such a pnrpose should be cherished by any portion of the Repub lican party, tinder existing circumstances, is not calculated to inspire the country with any high confidence in its wisdom, or ability to wield successfully the power which lias been committed to its bands.— i Its success, if such a thing were possible, | would be the signal for the instant dii-rtip- tion of the party, and the precursor of a | failure in the attempt to administer the . (Jovernment, more marked and lamented ! than the country has ever seen. The Post’s correspondent ascribes this conspiracy against Mr. .Seward partly to personal hostility in the State of New York. Thi motive is unquestionably very active and very powerful iu some quarters. Not one at all conversant with tiie political history of the past ten years, can doubt that it stimulates the Tribune to the fierce and retitless warfare which it was waging against every Republican who, in common with Mr, Seward, desires to place the Administration on a basis com patible with the existence of the Union, lint this crusade is also due- in part to the dement of Abolition ism, which is strug gling for the control of the Republican par- tv, and which has acted with that party hitherto with the hope of being able—soon er or later—to coerce it into subserviency with its own purposes and plans. The ope.n and avowed Aboiitionists are for dis union, and do not hesitate to proclaim it. Their secret allies and agents in the ranks of the Republican party and in the office of the Tribune, seek the same end by a more covert but an equally effective poli cy. Planting fora—t£oick (irnlBstltn. Dr. Chamberlain, of liuren county, Ili- nois, lias made some important discoveries in the germination of corn, and claims to be able to produce a very rapid and speedy growth, by soaking the seed in a solution of Clioloride of Lime. An Illinois paper says: “Last year Dr. Chamberlain of this place made some practical experiments, and demonstrated that nearly half the time may he saved in germinating the seed by the use of clioloride ot iitne. “Not satisfied with the success of last year, lie is again experimenting. In bis office lie has four boxes: in the lirst is corn planted without soaking, and the seed is not germinated; in the second, the seed was soaked in warm water, which has just commenced to germinate; in the third is seed soaked in a solution of lime, and green blades arc just peeping from the ground; in the fourth is seed soaked in a solution of lime and copperas in equal parts and the blades are now nearly three inches above the ground. All the seeds were planted at the same time, in the same finality of s iil, and taken from the same car. The boxes have all had an equal share of beat and light, neither allowed any advantage over the other. Another fact of importance may also be mentioned: The copperas used iu soaking will prevent the birds, squirrels, worms, Ac., from eatiDg the seed. Dr. Chamberlain assured us that one pound of clioloride and one pound of cop peras, in water, will soak enough seed for twenty acres. The cost will not be over twenty-five cents. Every farmer could afford to make the experiment even if be should fail to derive any benefit from it.” nailing Fr-nre Posts.—A correspondent of the New 11am] shire Journal of'Agricul ture says, that thirty years ago he set some fence posts which, upon recent exam ination, proved to be perfectly sound.— This preservation he attiibutes to the fact of bis having bored each post with a two-inch auger, about three inches above 'lie ground, filling the hole with salt and pluggging it up. The quantity of salt to each post was about half a pint. UEoROI \.*Twlgg* County. A compound remedy, in w hich we have labored to produce the tnost effectual alterative that can be made. It is a concentrated extract of Para Sarsa parilla, so combined with other substances of still greater alterative power as to afford an effective antidote tor the diseases Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It is believed that such a remedy is wanted iv those who suffer from Strumous complaints, and that one which will accomplish their cure must prove of immense service to this large class of our afflicted fellow-citizens. IIow completely this com- pountl will do it lias been proven by experiment on many of the worst cases to be found of the follow ing complaints : — 8t uoi CLA a.vo Scrofulous Complaints, Erup tions an.) Eruptive Diseases, Ulceus, Pimples, Blotches Yimous, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Affections, Mercurial Disease. Dropsy, Neuralgia or Tic Douloureux, Debility, Dyspepsia and Indigestion, Erysipe las, Rose or Sr. Anthony’s Eire, and indeed the whole cl. s of complaints arising from Impurity op the Blood. T his compound will be found a great promoter of health, when taken in the spring, to expel the foul humors which fester in tho blood at that sea son of the year. By the timely expulsion of them many rankling disorders arc nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, by the aid of this remedy, spare themselves from the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous sores, through which the system w ill strive to rid itself of corruptions, if not assisted to do this through the natural channels of the body by an alterative medicine. Cleanse mit the vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in pimples, eruptions, or sores; elean-e it when you find it is obstructed and slug gish in the veins; elear.se it whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell you when. Even where no particular disorder is felt, people enjoy better health, and live longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the blood healthy, and all is well; but with this pabulum of life disordered, there can be no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong, and the great machinery ol life is disordered cr overthrown. Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the reputa tion of accomplishing these ends. But the world has been cgregiouslv deceived by preparations of it, partly because the drug alone has not all the virtue that is claimed for it, but more because many prep arations, pretending to be concentrated extracts of it, contain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla, or any thing else. During late years the public have been misled by large bottles, pretending to give a quart of Ex tract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most of these have been frauds ujion the : ick. lor they not only contain little, if any, Sarsaparilla, but often no curative properties whatever. Ilence, bitter and painful disappointment has followed the use of the various extracts of Sarsaparilla which flood the market, until the name itself is justly despised, and has become synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from the load of obloquy which rests upon it. And we think we have ground for believing it has vir tues which arc irresistible by the ordinary run of the diseases it is intended to cure. In order to secure the ir complete eradication from the system, the remedy should be judiciously taken according to directions on the bottle. PREPARED BY DR. J. C. AYER & CO. LOWELL, MASS.
