SOUTHERN FEDERAL WHOM. BKilledgeTille, tt». Snow.—More snow fell in this vicinity on the evening ot the Irtth inst., tlmu we bsve seen be fore for a another of years Next morning the ground was covered to the depth* wo snppose, of t.vo Indies. The yonug folks were delighted. It was a day of rare sport for the boys. The snow 1 tsted all day and so did the fun. We regret that the fruit has suffered so se verely— we have scarcely a peach left. At a Piiuiers supper, in Jloston, in honor of t Birth Day at Franklin, the following toast was “drui.g, ail standing.’’ ‘The Sooth—May it never be uecessaty to use Shooting Sticks to kuock into pi the forms of onr Southern brethern. ’ Knock into pi, indeed ! The forms of Southern men are Stereotycd and can’t be pied, they are already on the pr- ss, slid a “work" has been com menced (free of the “errors’’ c ’mnaon in Boston.) which is rV stined to be popular withont yankt e “puffing.” We are bound to issue a fair edition in spite of “Shoo’ing Sticks" or the Devil himself. People that have brains never sneer at Mechan ics, because are they Mechanics, for everybody, that has any sense, knows one good industrious Mechanic i« of more service to his country, in his day and generation, than a dozen of your idle kid- glove gentry We are not only indebted to Meehan ics lor mostof the comforts and conveniences of life, but it is to them we look, more than to any other class of men. for the defense of our country and the protection of our property. Our volunteer companies and fire companies are composed most ly of Mechanics. Parson Brownlow says ho wouldn’t have but one office and that is Governor of Tennessee, he wants that that he may hare the power to rebuke the hot-headed secessionists, and to get the salary. The Parson has composed a prayer for Tennessee in which he calls on Heaven to rebuke secession ists and extremists generally. He is always on ex tremes himself and, of course, included in the prayer. He will have to pray one of these days to nave his former pr&3’ers forgiven. . What’s the use of whining about what you .Millin' have been ? who care’s? People look at what you are, and not what you might have been. If you have failed to improve the talent commit ted to 3'our care, you deserve, and will receive, but little sympathy. Somebody save, a delusion of some sort is neces sary to happiness. The most common delusion is “I am as good as anybody, if not a little better.” If people would only do what they ad vise others to do a great reformation would he worked. Why is that some people have so much charity for their own faults and so little for the faults of others? We suppose tiiey think charity ought to begin at home. There arc hypocrite:- in politeness ns well as in relig ion. Some men have honey ‘Hi their lips and hatred iu their hearts. If you wish to know your faults quarrel with your best friend. A Western paper says :—“Wanted, *t this of- fine, an editor who can please everybody. Also, a foreman who can so arrange llie paper as to allow every man’s advertiseim tit to head the column.” Ilngham Young is said to be a lean man, but it would be difficult to count his ribs. Blur Etj's and Great Men.—The Court Journal says that all the American Presidents, except Gen. Harrison, had blue eyes. So had Shakspesre, I.ocke. Bacon. Milton, Goethe, Franklin, Napo leon and Humboldt. Of ail earthly music, that which reaches the farthest into heaven is the beating of a loving heart. A IttHty, The peculiarity of the following ingeniously collected lines consist in this: that each line is one of well known verses, and yet they are so well collated that they rhyme, and are of the same metre: The moon was shining silver bright, Ml bloodless lay the untrodden snow, Whitt freedom from the mountain height Exclaimed: ‘Now don’t be foolish, Joe!’ An hour passed on, the Turk awoke: A bumble bee went thund- ring b3', 'lo Lover in the sulphur smoke. And spread its pall upon the sky. His echoing axe the settler swung— He was a lad of high renown, Ami deep the pearly caves among, Giles Scroggins courted .Molly Brown! Loud roars the wild, inconstant blast. And cloudless set the sun at even. When twilight dews are falling fast. And rolls the thunder-drum of heaven! Oh. ever thus from childhood’s hour. By torch or trnmphet fast tinned, Beneath yon ivy-mantled tower. The bull frog croaks bis serenade. Oh. my love is like the red, red rose, He bought a ring with posy true, Sir Barney Bodkin bloke bis nose. And, Saxon, I am Hhoderick Dim! If’*, me. We find in our drawer, among many other gems, the following piece of prose poetry.—We know not who wrote it, but are satisfied that he dwelt among men : Passing n neat little martin box of a house last eveuing we happened to see a man waiting at the door for admittance. At the instant a given blind above just opened a little way, and by the gas light we caught the glimpse of a pair of bril liant eyes and a Hutter ol something white, and a bird toned voice softly said, “Who’s there "It's me." w as the brief response. The eyes and the Hotter disappeared from the window, like stars in a cloud, and we almost fancied, as we passed on, we could hear the pattering of tivo little feet upon the stairs, winged with welcome. It was a trifle; it happened all to be in an instant, but it haunted us for an hour. It's me. Amid the jar of the great city, those words fell upon the quick car aloft, and met a glad response. It's me. And who was “me ?” The pride of a heart's life, no doubt; the tree, a vine was clinging to the ‘ Defender of the Faithful,” is the best sense in the world. "it's me'." Many there are who would give half their hearts, and more than half the hope in them, for one such recognition in tbis “wide, wide world.” On ’Change, in the Directory, at the Post Office, he was known as A. G. S., Esq, but on the threshold, and within tbe walls it’s me and nothing more: what more there one would love is tobe T Ke’.v of all the hearts that beat so wildly warm ly, sadly, slowly, can recognize a true soul amid the din and darkness of the world, iu that simple but eloquent it's me. As if he had said, Now I am nothing to the world. For 1 am tbe world to thee. MONTHLY CITATIONS. GEORGIA, Twiggs County. Night and Sleep.—What a wonderful and Messed thing is niglit!—when Nature withdraws the stimulus poured upon tbe brain through the little channel of the eye, and all the cares and fatigues of the past day, like nurses, who, having been cross with the wayward child till it was weary, turn kind and compassionate at last, and rock the mind to sleep. “The blanket of dark,” Shakspeare calls it, and contrasts it with Heaven. Now, doubtless there is many a wicked thing done behind the blanket; but 1 see not why the mis use of any of Heaven’s best gifts by man and man’s passions, should take away from the value of that gift. The best boon that ever was conveyed can he abused. When God created the evil and the good. He permitted the evil, but ordained the good, and left men to choose between them. Did you ever know a woman that would not think you were intelligent, if you said her children were pretty? Why is a selfish friend like the letter P? Because, though the first in pity, he is tho last in help. Some malicious person asserts that the letters M. D., which are placed after phy sicians names, signify “Money Down ” A little fellow one day non-plnssed his mother by making the following inquiry: “Mother, if a man is a mister, ain’t a wo man a misiery?” A teacher of vocal mnsic asked an old lady if her grandson had any ear for music. “ Wa’ll said the old woman, “I really don’t know. I Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, A compound remed3‘, in which we have labored to produce the most effectual alterative that can be made. It is a concentrated extract of l’ara Sarsa parilla, so combined with other substances of still greater alterative jxnver as to afford an effective antidote for the diseases Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It is believed that such a remedy is wanted by those who suffer from Strumous complaints, and that one which will accomplish their cure must prove of immense service to this large class of our afflicted fellow-citizens, llow completely this com pound will do it has been proven by experiment on main- of the worst cases to be found of the follow ing cumplaiuts: — Seuoiuwt and Scrofulous Comflaixts, Erup tions \n;> Eruptive Diseases, Ulcers, Pimples, Blotches, Tumors, Salt Rheum, Scai.d Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Affections, Mercurial Disease, Dropsy, Neuralgia or Tic Douloureux, DEBii.rrY, Dyspepsia and Indigestion, Erysipe las, Rose or St. Anthony’s Fire, and indeed the whole class of complaints arising from Impurity of the Blood. This compound will be found a great promoter of health, when taken in the spring, to expel the foul humors which fester in the blood at that sea son of the 3'enr. By the timely expulsion of them many rankling disorders are nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, by the aid of this remedv', spare themselves from the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous sores, through which the system will strive to rid itself of corruptions, if not assisted to do this through the natural channels of the body by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in pimples, eruptions, or sores; cleanse it when you find it is obstructed and slug gish in the veins ; cleanse it whenever it is foul, aud your feelings will tell you when. Even where no particular disorder is felt, people enjoy better health, aad live longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the blood healthy, and all is well; but with this pabulum of life disordered, there can be no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong, and the great machinery of life is disordered cr overthrown. Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the reputa tion of accomplishing these ends. But the world has been egregious^- deceived b3’ preparations of it, partly because the drug alone has not all the virtue that is claimed for it, but more because many prep arations, pretending to be concentrated extracts of it, contain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla, or any thing else. During late years the public have been misled by large Ixitilcs, pretending to give a quart of Ex tract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most of these have been frauds upon the sick, for they not only contain little, if any. Sarsaparilla, but often no curative properties whatever. Hence, bitter and painful disappointment has follow ed the use of the various extracts of Sarsaparilla which flood the market, until the name itself is justly despised, and has become sj-nonrmouj with imposition and cheat. Still we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend to supply such a remedy us shall rescue the name from the load of obloquy which rests upon it. And we think we have ground for believing it has vir tues which arc irresistible by the ordinary run of the diseases it is intended to cure. In order to secure their complete eradication from the system, the remedy should be judiciously taken according to directions on the bottle. prepared by DR. J. C. AYER X CO. T,OWEI,L, MASS. Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral has won for itself such a renown for the cure of every variety of Throat and Lung Complaint, that it is en tirely unnece sary for us to recount the evidence of its virtues, wherever it has been employed. As it has long been in constant use throughout this section, we need not do more than assure the people its quality is kept up to the best it ever has been, and that it may be relied on to do for their relief all it has ever been found to do.
