life wo have to tight, instead of facing
them manfully and taking them coolly, as
unavoidable, give up in despair, or tly from
one occupation to another, and roam the
world over, without ever accomplishing
anything, or making themselves happy and
contented. When we first “cut our ca
ble and launch into the world, we fondly
dream each wind and star our friends.”
Yes, we are most sure to think that all
things will work together for our further
ance, and we will glide smoothly over the
sea of life, with scarcely any trouble or
labor on our part. But soon discourage
ments present their brazen front occasion
ed by ditiiculiies and disappointments, and
we make, a thousand shifts to get round
them, and think our case is peculiar, till
experience, the only convincing teacher,
shows us that it is useless and that it is the
lot of all without exception.
We then for the first time find that to
be true which life’s older soldiers have
told us a thousand times, that it is an un
ceasing wartare. There is but one alter
native left us—either to face them bravely,
or give up and be ruined. Progress will
be the inevitable result of perseverance;
and though we can never intermit our war
fare, we will reach the goal of success in
our undertaking.
How well it would be if all, w hen setting
out in life, could be taught and made to
believe these stubborn facts! for then they
would be armed against them, and not
“think strange as though some strange
thing had happened unto them” when
they came to pass. But the sanguine
hopes and ardent aspirations of the your.g
are too strong to be taught or governed by
anything else but stern, glaring experience,
and it does ns good to see them being
taught by this great teacher, confirming
the adv'ce and warnings ot older pupils in
her school.

Scrofula, or King’s Evil,
is a constitutional disease, a corruption of the blood,
by -which this fluid becomes vitiated, weak, and
poor. Being in the circulation, it pervades the
whole body, and may burst out in disease on any
part of it. ’ No organ is free from its attacks, nor
there one wliicli it may not destroy. The scrofu

low living, disordered or unhealthy food, impure
air, filth and tilthv habits, the depressing vices,
and, above all, by the venereal infection. What
ever be its origin, it is hereditary in the constitu
tion, descending “ from parents to children unto the
third and fourth generation indeed, it seems to

to withstand the attacks of other diseases ; con-
sequentlv, vast numbers perish by disorders which,
although not scrofulous iu their nature, are still ren
dered fatal by this taint in the system. Most of
the consumption which decimates the human family
has its origin directly in this scrofulous contamina
tion ; and many destructive diseases of the liver,
kidneys, brain, and, indeed, of all the organs, arise
from or are aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all otir people are scrofulous;
their persons are invaded by this lurking infection,
and their health is undermined by it. To cleanse
it from the system we must renovate the blood
by an alterative medicine, and invigorate it by
healthy food and exercise. Such a medicine we
supply in
AYER’S
Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla,
the most effectual remedy which the medical skill
of our times can devise lor this every where pre
vailing and fatal malady. It is combined from the
most active rcmedials that have been discovered for
the expurgation of this fowl disorder from the blood,
anil the rescue of the system from its destructive
consequences. Hence it should he employed for
the cure of not only scrofula, but also those other
affections which arise from it, such as Eruptive
and Ski.v Diseases, St. Anthony’s Fire, Rose,
or Erysipelas, Pimpi.es, Pustules, Blotches,
Blaine and Boils, Tumors, Tettf.r and Salt
Rheum, Scald Head, Ringworm, Rheumatism,
Syphilitic and Mercurial Diseases, Dropsy,
Dyspepsia, Dep.ility, and, indeed, all Complaints
ARISING FROM VlTIATED OR IMPURE BLOOD. The
popular belief in ‘ ‘ impurity of the blood ’ ’ is founded
in truth, for scrofula is a degeneration of tbe blood.
The particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsapa
rilla is to purify and regenerate this vital fluid,
without which sound health is impossible in con
taminated constitutions.
Ayer’s Cathartic Pills,
FOR ALL THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY PHYSIO,
arc so composed that disease within the range of theil
action can rarely withstand or evade them. Their pen
etrating properties search, and cleanse, and invigorate
every portion of the human organism, correcting its
diseased action, and restoring its healthv vitalities. As
a consequence of tliese properties, the invalid who is
bowed down with pain or physical debility is astonished
to find his health or energy restored by a remedy at
once so simple and inviting.
Not only do they cure the every-day complaint* of
every body, hut also many formidable and dangerous
diseases. The agent below named is pleased to furnish
gratis my American Almanac, containing certificates
of their cures and directions for their use in the follow
ing complaints: Costirrncss, Heartburn, Headache,
arising from disordered stomach, Xausca, Indigestion,
Pain in and Morbid Inaction of the Jiotoels, IVatuiency.
Loss of Appetite, Jaundice, and other kindred com
plaints, arising from a low state of the body or obstrue
tion of its functions.
Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral,
FOR THE RAPID CURE OF
Coughs, Colds, Influenza. Hoarseness, Cronp,
Bronchitis, Incipient Consumption, and for
the relief of Consumptive Patients in ad
vanced stages of tbe disease.
So wide is the field of its usefulness and so numerous
are the cases of its cures, that almost every section of
country abounds in persons publicly known, who have
been restored from alarming and even desperate dis
eases of the lungs by its use. When once tried, it*
superiority over every other medicine of its kind is too
apparent to escape observation, and where its virtues,
are known, the public no longer hesitate what antidote
to employ for the distressing and dangcrons affections
of the pulmonary organs that are incident to our
climate. While many inferior remedies thrust upon
the community have failed and been discarded, this has
gained friends by every trial, conferred benefits on the
afflicted they can never forget, and produced cures to®
numerous and too remarkable to be forgotten.
