Prom the Richmond Despatch.
A DIABOLICAL SCHEME.
We yesterday gave an extract front (
Greeley’s Tribune, recommending a parti-1
tion of the lands iu Virginia and Maryland |
among the invading army. \\ ebb, of the
Courier, endeavoring to surpass iiis leader
of tlie White llat, calls for two hundred
thousand volunteers, and insists that we
shall he starved out and drowned out.
Private advices suggest that it is tile de
sign to exterminate us, root and branch, and
Mint, instead of slave labor upon the cotton
iialds, it is the purpose to employ coolies
from China. Y\ e refer to these facts sim
ply to put them on record,'for the day will
•'nine when men will doubt that such ma
lignant and devilish wickedness, unparal-
1 led in the history of nations, could exist.
It wilt never he accomplished, hut we
want it to he remembered, and when peace
is restored, and this same truculent mob
tind it to their interest, for the purpose of
securing Southern trade, to say' smooth
things to the South, we want the .South
ern people to remember all this, and sub
mit to any piivations, to poverty, to death
itself before being longer tributary to the
trade and prosperity of such a people.
When these wretches threaten the South
with extermination, they threaten her
with that which Southern men have been
trained from the cradle to regard as a
-mailer evil than degradation and dishon
or. Death is a necessary' ill—dishonor
aud degradation are not. Death must,
sooner or later, come to us all, either in
the lingering agonies of disease, or by the
sharp surgery of the sword; but death, in
any form, is preferable to a life of subjec
tion and shame. If our whole race must
perish, we shall all escape the keenest
jiang which death inflicts—the grid of
those who arc bereaved; if our children
survive, they will survive to avenge our
wrongs. But we tell those hraggaris that,
before their infernal purposes are achiev
ed, every hearthstone iu their own land,
will he made to ring with the cry of deso
lation. Their explosions of furious passion :
are not the explosions of true courage.
Any coward can talk, and fume, aud
threaten, aud, at a safe distance, can sur
pass the world in tinning and hectoring,
t ireclcy, now the acknowledged leader of
the Northern crusade, is, personally, the
most pusillanimous of men, unless Bennett,
of the Herald, be an exception; and Webo
is more contemjitiblc than both, because
he professe to he a lighting man, and ran
away from V* ashington at the sight of
Duff (Ireen’s pistol. New York is the
greatest generator of gas on the continent.
It sent a fleet to attack Charleston, hut
the fleet dared not land, it caused the
telegraph throughout the land to resound
with the news that Stuart, the dry goods
man, had given a million of dollars to the
war, Wm. ii. Astor lour millions, Ac., Ac.
It now turns out that the grand total of
the immense sums poured fouith by' Lin
coln’s millionaires for the support of the
invasion, is S*>7,790. forced loans will
have to come, and the Northern financiers
bleed at every vein and artery, before the
invasion will he fairly begun. It will he
a longer war than the Revolution, a war
for which tnerc was no such provocation
as that which the Boutli has received from
the North, and in which our people were
distracted by divisions which do not now
exist. The strength of the North will he
exerted at the onset, whilst that of the
South, slowly develojied, will increase in
power, persistency and aggressiveness, as
the war proceeds. When the North has
succeeded in ridding its great cities of its
superabundant pauper population, and it
becomes necessary for its industrial and
jiroducing classes to inarch from their
homes, we shall see no such excitement as
that which is now raging among their peo
ple. It will he only then that the South
will he fully' warmed up to her work; and
thoroughly organized iu every section, we
vliall not only he able to defend our»elves,
hut to strike at the fertile fields and the
populous cities which are now threatening
us with universal destruction for no other
crime than desiring to separate peaceably'
from a Union which has been converted
from a Union of free and independent
States into an irresponsible and bloody
despotism.
A Card from Bon. C. L, YallanUsnchani-
Daytov, < Into, Wednesday, April 17. i
To the Editor of the Enquirer:
1 have a word for the Republican press j
and partisans ot Cincinnati and other pla
ces abroad, who now daily falsify and mis
represent me and matters which concern
me here iu Dayton.
My r position in regard to this civil war,
which the Lincoln Administration has in
augurated, was Jong since taken, is well
known, aud trill he adhered to to the end.
Let that be understood. I have added no
thing to it, subtracted nothing from it, said
nothing about it publicly, since the war
began. I know welt that I am right, and
that in a little while “the sober second
thought of the people,” will dissipate the
present sudden and fleeting public mad
ness, and will demand to know why thirty'
millions of people are butchering each oth
er in ci.il war, and will arrest it speedily.
But, in the meantime, should my' own
btate be invaded, or threatened with inva
sion, as soon as may be, then, as a loyal
native horn son of Ohio, acknowledging
my first allegiance to be to her, I will aid
in defending her to the last extremity',
asking no ijuestions. Whoever shall re
fuse then, or hesitate, will he a traitor and
a dastard. Aud this same rule I apply as
well to the people of Virginia, Kentucky,
or Missouri, as to any of the tree Btates,
North or West.
As to myself, no threats have been made
to tne personally; none within hearing; no
violence offered; no mob anywhere; none
will he; nobody is afraid of any, and every
statement or rumor in regard to ine circu
lated orally, or published in the Republi
can press, is basely idle and false. And
now let me add, for the benefit of the
cowardly slanderers of Uinciunati or else
where, who libel me daily, that if they
have any business with me, 1 can he found
every day and at any time, either at home,
on the Northwest corner of First and Lud
low, or upon the streets of Davton.

Pious Anecdote.—At a “patriotic jnbila-
tion” recently in the capital of Indiana, a
pious anecdote was told. The extract is
from the Indianapolis Journal:
Mr. Newcomb related the following sto
ry as illustrating the difference between
two sections of the country. During the
past winter, said the speaker, Robinson,
of R. I., w as unfortunate enough to form
the acquaintance of Wigfall, of Texas
Wigfall was blustering away in his windy
style, about what the South was going to
do in the event of war. Robinson listened
until lie had finished, and then replied,
“Mr. Wigfall, you don’t understand our
people; you accuse us of cowardice. You
are mistaken. You of the South talk big—
then you take a drink—then put in more
big talk—then take a drink. We Yankees
don’t operate that wav. We sit down and
calculate the cost, aud what is to he gain
ed before going into anything. Having
made up our minds, we say let us pray,”
and after prayers ycy may look out for
hell!" _ _

Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, he reputa
