As;.*b Proverbs.—When you are the anvil, hare, patience—when you arc tlic 1 hammer strike well and straight. A great many human being dig their graves with their teeth. A generous man will place tho benefits he confers beneath his feet—those he receives-^earest his heart. If you wish to appear agreeable in society you must consent to be taught many things that you know already. To succeed in the world, it is much more necessary to possess the penetration to discover who is a fool, than to discover who is a clever fellow. Experience teaches us to indulgence; the wisest is he who doubts his own judgment with regard to the motives which actuate his fellow men. . A friend that you have to buy will be worth what vou have to pay for him no matter how little that may ever be. Postered Feet.—A Remedy.— To thr Editor* iif the Commercial Advertiser. —I had for several years two sons at School at Geneva, Switzerland. In vaca tion they in company with their tutor, made excursions through Switzerland, Italy, Ger many, Ac., on foot, bearing tlw?ir knap sacks containing their necessary wants for a month. They were provided with a small har of common brown soap, and before putting on their stockings turned tbam in side out and rubbed the soap well into the threads of them, consequently they never became foot sore, or had blistered feet. Let our volunteers try it, and ray word for it, they wont complain of sore or blistered feet. Those boys of mine are in the Seventh Regiment, and made the march from An napolis to Washington scathless as far as the feet were concerned and carried their knapsacks with comparative case, from early schooling. There is no doubt tbat a company is form ing in Liverpool to start a line of steamers between that city and Charleston. The British capitalists are making preparations to open a direct trade, with the South. Prospectus are out in Liverpool, for a line of steamet8 between that place and New Orleans, with a proposed capital of one million of dollars. To (jminers.—The following prescription is recommended as a protection of the membrane of the ear of gunners during cannonading: Prepared glycerine, mixed with belladonna ; say about in the propor- rion of forty grains of the latter to the ounce of glycerine oil. Let each gunner be provided, before an engagement with wool or cotton, (the former is preferable,) saturated with the mixture to place in his ears. It will not prevent his hear ing the word of command or the drum, and wiil prevent a great deal of injury. The Therapetttic of the preventive, medical men will perceive, as it forms a c ating over the membrane, which can be easily -loanc >,l h_w " warm Wafer o»'I \vil> effectually prevent the vibration of the ear striking injuriously upon it. It would also be useful to those exposed to damp ness when camping out at night, the organ in question being extremely sensitive to the night air. By taking this precaution, tbat deafness to which gunners are now so liable may be prevented We had rather every ear of our corn and every grain of our wheat should be blighted, that every tree in our magnificent forests should be consumed, that every hope of our life should be blasted, that the supreme wish of immortality hereafter should be disappointed, than that wesliould be overrun and trampled under foot and deprived of tbat liberty which we believe God gave us, by those who regard neither justice, honesty, civilization nor religion — Nashville Patriot. Noble Horse.—Grant Thorburn says: “I once saw a horse, in the neighborhood of New York, drawing a load of coal of 1200 weight, in a cart. The lane was very nar row—the driver, some distance behind, was conversing with a neighbor. The horse, on a slow walk came up to a little child sitting in the middle of the road, gathering up dust with Ids hands, and making mountains out of mole hills. The horse stopped—lie smelled of the child— there was no room to turn off. With his thick lips he gathered the frock between his teeth lilted the child, laid him gently on the outside of the wheel track, and went on bis way rejoicing.’ And well might he rejoice—he had done a noble deed.’ From the Loudon lioview. Slave and F rpc Slnlfn in liar IS< pub lic. It grows more evident from day to day that a re-union of the States is no longer possible, and that it would not l:o desira ble if it were. Mr. Seward, the new Secretary of State under Mr. Lincoln, and who hasdone more than any other Ameri can statesmen to bring about tlic present crisis, declared a year ago that the conflict between the slave and. free States was ‘ir repressible.” His prophesy lias been fui- filled in a manner that he could scarcely have anticipated. Tlie conflict which be meant was a moral one, to be fought out in books, newspapers, and speeches. But the conflict which lias arisen is one of the bayonet and bullet,’and may at any mo ment, and from the paltriest provocation, become a war mire flagrant and venemous than any ftcoroed in modern history. The best thing that the North and the South can do is to shake hands and part. They never ha'-e agreed, they never will agree, they never can agree. Their differences are irreconci ablc—their interests are con flicting. Their very temperament and character are antagonistic, and are made so no less by the institution of slavery in CITATIONS. i.i.oKGIa, Bulloch County. Every earthly blessing, nay. every heavenly hope, will be sacrificed for her affections. A c See advertisement in another column Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, A compound remedy, in which we have labored to produce the most effectual alterative that can be made. It is a concentrated extract of Para Sarsa parilla, so combined witJT other substances of still greater alterative power as to afford an iffective antidote for the diseases Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It is believed that such a remedy is Wanted by those who suffer from Strumous complaints, and that one which will accomplish their cure must prove of immense service to this large class of our afflicted fellow-citizens. How completely this com pound will do it has been proven by experiment on many of the worst cases to be found of the follow ing complaints: — Scrofula and Scrofulous Complaints, Erup tions and Eruptive Diseases, Ulcers, Pimples, Blotches, Tumors, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Affections, Mercurial Disease, Dropsy, Neuralgia or Tic Douloureux, Debility, Dyspepsia and Indigestion, Erysipe las, Rose or St. Anthony's Fire, and indeed the whole class of complaints arising from Impurity OF THE I! LOOK. This compound will be found a great promoter of health, when taken in the spring, 'to expel the foul humors which fester in the blood at that sea son of the year. By the timely expulsion of them many rankling disorders are nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, by the aid of this remedy, spare themselves from the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous sores, through which the system will strive to rid itself of corruptions, if not assisted to do this through the natural channels of the body by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities' basting through the skin in pimples, eruptions, or sores; cleanse it when you find it is obstructed and slug gish in tiie veins; cleanse it whenever it is foul, and your feelings will toil you when. Even where no particular disorder is felt, people enjoy better health, and live longer, for eleansing the blood. Keep the Wood healthy, and all is well; but with this pabulum of life disordered, there can be no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong, and the great machinery of life is disordered cr overthrown. Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the reputa tion of accomplishing these ends. But the world has been c-gregiously deceived by preparations of it, partly because the drug alone has not all the virtue that is claimed for it, but more lieeause many prep arations, pretending to be concentrated extracts of it, contain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla, or any thing else. During late years the public have been misled by large Unties, pretending to give a quart of Ex tract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most of these have been frauds upon the sick, for they not only contain little, if any, Sarsaparilla, but often no curative properties whatever. Hence, bitter and painful disappointment lias followed the use of the various extracts of Sarsaparilla which Hood the market, until the name itself is justly despised, and has become synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still we (all this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from the load of obloquy which rests upon it. And we think we have ground for believing it has vir tues which are irresistible by the ordinary run of the diseases it is intended to cure. In order to secure their complete eradication from the system, the remedy should be judiciously taken according to directions on the bottle. prepared by DB. J. C. AYER A CO. LOWELL, MASS. Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral has won for itself such a renown for the cure of every variety of Throat and Lung Complaint, that it is en tirely unnece-sarv for us to recount the evidence of its virtues, wherever it lias been employed. As it ha* long been in constant use throughout tliis section, we need not do more than assure the people its quality is kept up to the best it ever has been, and that it may be relied on to do for their relief all it has ever been found to do.
