THE TWO HE80l»ER,fl!SSE* KEEK V ' D Wf '' EEO». The two noble heroines, Misses Abbic Keer and Mary McLeod, of Fairmont, j Marion ennty. who rode from their homes | to Phillippi. .-: distance of thiny'u id miles, j to apprise our forces there of the approach j of the enemy arrived in Staunton by the! Western train on vVcdnesiiay night last, i and remained till Friday morning, when j they went to Richmond. M hilc here they were the “observed ot ail observers,” and wore received with a cordial welcome. Great anxiety was manifested by all to hear a detailed account of their interesting adventures from their own lips. They left Fairmont at 6 o’clock on Sunday morn ing, and hastened, without escorts to Phillippi. I hey had not gone a great distance before they found that a slme of one of the horses needed fixing. They stopped at a blacksmith shop for that pur pose and while there a Union man came up and qnestioned them verv closely as to who they were, and on what mission they were going. Miss McLeod replied to his interrogatories—telling him that their surname was Fleming and that they were g ing to Barbour county to see their relations. Their interrogator seemed to be very hard to satisfy, and it taxed the ingenuity of Miss McLeod to improvise a story which would succeed in imposing up on him. As soon as the horse-shoe had been fixed, they again proceeded on their way, but had not gone far before their evil genius, their interrogator at the hlacksm'th shop dashed by them on horseback. They perceived that his suspicions had not been allayed, and that he was going on in advance of them to herald the ap proach of spies. They allowed him to pass out of sight in advance, and then de stroyed the letters they had in possession that the search of their persons, fo which tbej? then anticipated they would he re quired to submit, might not betray them, i When they arrived at the village of W fib ster. they found it in commotion, and j many persons were anxiously awaiting their arrival in the eager hope of captur ing the spies. They were there subjec ted to a rigorous cross-examination. The heroines were calm and self-posessed— answering their questions without hesitan cy—and expressed a perfect willingness! to have their persons searched by any lady they might select for that purpose. Being in the circulation, it pervades the whole body, and may burst out in disease on any part of it." No organ is free from its attacks, nor is there one which it may not destroy. The scrofu lous taint is variously caused by mercurial disease, low living, disordered or unhealthy food, impure air, filth and filthy habits, the depressing vices, and, above all, by the venereal infection. "What ever be its origin, it is hereditary in the constitu tion, descending “ from parents to children unto the third and fourth generation indeed, it seems to be the rod of Him who says, “ I will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon their children.” Its effects commence by deposition from the blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in the lungs, liver,.and internal organs, is termed tuber cles ; in the glands, swellings; and on the surface, eruptions or sores. This foul corruption, which genders in the blood, depresses the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitutions not only suffer from scrofulous complaints, but they have far less power to withstand the attacks of other diseases; con sequently, vast numbers perish I v disorders which, although not scrofulous in their nature, are still rem SOUTHERN CULT1VAlOh KBIifi MEI-:»S i im; the koi tii.
