TO LA FAYETTE.
To the home at the freeman we welcome thee,
Thou sdn of a distant dime,
The voice of the land tlum fought but to free,
Will echo thy praises to Time.
Thy fame, like the rainbow in.heaved,
Is high in the land of its birth,
And it Seems to eternity given.
Fur it rests on the ends of tire earth.
Thou comest to us o'er a distant wave,
To visit the scenes of thy youth,
And to shed, perhaps, o’er tUV Patriot's grave,
A tear for his kindncsaalid truth.
But the drop that fulls from thy aged eye,
For the fate of Columbia's son,
Will he caught ere it reach where his relics li.
And a thousand returned thee for one.
The hands of a people whose fame ne'er decays,
When thy own from the earth shall retire,
With swelling hearts to tliee they'll raise,
And bless time us friend of their sire.
Tho’ the pitiless hand of coming time,
Shall point dice a pathway above.
Yet even there, from America’s dime,
A prayer shail rise to thy spiritsubiime, -
In token of endless love.
