A CCORDINGto au intimation heretofore given, there will be published at the Office of the National Intelligencer, during tin* next session of Congress, and, If encouraged by the approbation of the Public, at every session thereafter, R RE GISTER OF DEBATES IN CONGRESS, Intend- ed to comprehend ainore full Report of the Speech es on topics of general interest, in each House of Congre3»;thHn has ever heretofoie been published, or than can be given to the Public through the or dinary and limited channel, the columns of a news paper. This compilation will lie of the most uu thcntic east, printed with great regard to accuracy, and in u form for durable preservation. This undertaking is not of course intended to substitute or supercede the Reports, of Debates for the National Intelligencer, but rather, by with drawing the heuvy ami extended Reports troin its columns, tocuahle the Proprietors of that Journal to furnish, every day, in a comprehensive form, intelligible Reports *of the Proceedings and Dis cussions in the day preceding, on both Houses. The “Register" is necessarily an experiment, but it is au experiment the success of which we see no reuson to doubt. Every one who takes an interest in ourjioliticul history, ns well nsuli those who engage in the duties of political iite, must have felt and fomented the wunt of a Record of Debates in Congress, in u convenient form, with indexes which might lead the inquirer to any miu- ject debated, and to the name of any one. whoe.n-. gaged in debate. Such a work would lie an de ment ury book for young politicians, und we have no hesitation in asserting that the possession of such a one, from tire commencement of the exist ing government to tins day, would be of immense vuluoto the nation, were it only to shew what has heretofore been said upon questions which ure continualiy recurring for discussion, and . produc ing needless consumption of time by superfluous debate. What is true of the years that liuvc past, will, as soon as they are gone, be equally true ot those in which we live. Jt is not only, therefore, as a vehicle of present information, but also as it book for future reference —asa National Political Repository and Text-Book that we hope this work will be both useful and popular. . From tim lowness of the subscription to this work, itwillhe seenthut it is no pa;lof our cal culation to realize any present profit from it. On the contrary, we shall, in uil probability, lose mo ney by it for a year or two, hoping that thereafter its established character w ill ensure it u sufficient patronage to make it profitable. GALES k SEATON. Washington, September, 1824. CONDITIONS.
