A high handed piece of villainv was at tempted in this harbor on Thursday night, John Tardy alias John Late, lately a ten ant ofthc Penitentiary of New York, for med a scheme to steal the new-pilot boat Cora, and tampered with two of the ne groes belonging to her, mqking them large E romises, to effect his object. Messrs ►elany, Williams, and Copes, pilots, to whom the Boat belongs were acquainted with the design and kept watch for the felon. As he was in the act of hoisting sail and making off from the wharf, those gentlemen surprised him; when he fired his pistol at them, fortunately doing no harm, but Mr Copes felled him with his cutlass, and he was conveyed to the guard house, sjnee which be has hecn committed to jail to take bis trial at the January court. This fellow Tardy or Late pretends 'to be a dentist; but this it may be supposed is a mere cover for his villany. There is nodoubt that he meant to carry off the pilot boat and negroes to Cuba, and there sell out the whole concern to the pirates, or commence pirating on his own ac count. *. He had forged Spanish documents to carry him to Bayano, in Cuba, a noted rendezvouz for pirates. MARRIED, Last evening, by the Rov. From Albany.—“ The friends of Mr. Glav have not disappointed me;, but a day or two will produce some alteration in their views.—Rest assured, that the undi vided electoral vote of this state will be given to Mr Crawford*” ' Another Extract.—“ Every thing goos on well. Our friends are firm and cool and will make no bargains. • Rely upon it, that the vote will not be divided.—ib. THE PRESIDENCY- Give the votes of New-England to Mr. Adams, as waaoriginally calculated upon bud he has 51 votes. Ip New-Jersey the vote will positively bo for Jackson, as it will nearly he so in Maryland. We repeat it again nnd again, that con ceding to Mr Adams all that his friends openly claim, he will fall short of Craw ford and Jackson, and go into tho house the lowest on the list. This is inevitable From tie Charleston City Gaz. Nov. 13. By the arrival of the Steam Ship Rob ert Fulton, we have Now York papers to the evening of the 6th inst. inclusive We give the Presidential items, by which it appears that New York will give Mr Crawford her vote; Delaware will do the same; New-Ycrsey is said to be for Jack- son, and Maine yet doubtful. Clinton ia ijj all Granite Pillars.—Yesterday, the se cond of the granite .pillars destined to de corate the front of the U. S. Bank, reach ed State street from . Chelmsford. The height of these pillars is about 22 feet; di ameter 4 feet,- 19 tons. They arc the largest columns, made of a single piece of stone, we believe, which have been seen in this country, and hove therefore been re garded as a curiosity. They however will bear no comparison with those which have been erected in some countries. A friend who lately returned from Russia has hand ed us a description of the' pillars prepar ed for a church now buildings by the Em peror in St. Petersburg. They arc, hard coarse Gramite, 54 feet 3 inches in length 5 feet 10 inches in 'diameter, and weigh 91 tons 6 cwt. They are to be 50 in num ber, and are brought by sea from Finland, Post. Pat. giftg into the fish wJfen caught, continued a most furious attack; notwithstanding the disparity, the crew succeeded in driv ing them to the stem of die vessel,- where they leaped overboard and regained their canoes. It is worthy of rema/k, that when any of the Aativcs were wounded,.or stun ned by being knockpd down, they were instantly thrown by their comrades into the sea, where they oithef swam or were picked up by their companions, who fre quently attempted to accompany them to return, hut were always repulsed in en deavoring to get up the sides, nnd through out encouraged them by loud cheering. On their quitting the Syren the crew com menced firing and though greatly exhaus ted, having a ready supply of ammuni tion, it was kept up while within musket shot, but with ivhat effect it is not known, as several they supposed killed, from their falling into the water, were pcen to rise and regain their canoes; nearly the whole of the ship’s oompany were wounded se verely in this attack; the cftects of which, notwithstanding the unremitting exertions and skiff of,the surgeon, seyeral will nev er, it is feared, entirely recover from; and it is to be regretted that the carpenter, named Jos Caulfield who fought most courageously, lo^t his life by a blow from the whale spade, as did Wm. Warren, boat steercr, who was spCared most dread fully through the body.—Capt. Coffin and the crew are of opinion that the attack was concerted and organised by Europe ans or Americans resident-in the Island. From the N. York Evening Post. Nov, CANADA. The Parliament of Lower Canada meets early in January for the public busi ness. A good deal of feelings is manifested in the Montreal papers, on account of our fisheries in the St. Lawrence and on the coast of LaL.ador: and an association recommended for the purpose of secur ing this source of gain to the Canadians, and “ scaring smuggling” from their coasts. It is frankly acknowledged, how ever, that “isolated interests of individ uals, in the present situation, of the coun try, will never be able-to compete with the superior skill and enterprize ofthc Americans.” Were the political affairs Canada not under.the influence of Euro pcan control, we should not question .the success ofthc contemplated project. The disagreeable weight of the old water-proof hats is not felt in those' man ufactured by Mr Gibson.
