A very gentlemnnly, fresh colored, ro bust looking man, having grey hair, M as yesterday undergoing an examination be fore the Mayor, charged, as, we under stood,-with no legal ostensible means of living, and who having under false and fraudulent pretexts, obtained money from various respectable individuals, and of having curried on a-scene of deception in several parts of the Uilited States since the year 1808. In 1816 he was delivered up by thcf’lhte Governor Snyder to the au thorities of theSratc of New York, as a fugitive from justice. Demo. Press. to to of From the Niagara Sentinel. Shocking Affair—A gentleman - yester day related the following sad occurrence, which took place at Snyder’s Mills on the 20 mile creek, U. C. There u'erc also, two men present, when Mr M.Gill and his elOrk were examining the powder which had been damp, and lmd some lumps in it of the size of alien’s egg. The powder was within 6 dr 8 feet from t he fire. Just at this'time Dr Sampcl Woodruff, of the plqce, stepped in and taking up one of the lumps tossed it into the fire. It explc ded, throwing Out coals which communi cated to the rest and the whole burnt. I. blew up the roofof the store, which fell in broke all the crockery in the store, and iujured the goods, and most distressingly burnt the clerk, Mr M’Gill and Dr Wood ruff, who are in a hopclcs state of recover The clerk had a sinew drawn out of his arm from the back of his hand.
