of Mr Crawford. We do not mean to
say that the Electors themselves gave, or
were required to give pledges; nor do we
moan to impute any thing improper to
them. It was for them to decide how far
they were bound to answer a reasonable
expectation whicll they might not have
contributed to raise. But. those .who; by
pledges and solemn assurances, procured

An attempt was lately made to rob a
houso in Plainfield, Conn, by two men,
one of whom had succeeded in getting a-
bout half way into a window, and was
struggling to gain complete admittance,
when a Quaker who was sleeping in tho
room, awoke and feeling his benevolent
feelings excited, calmly rose from his bed,
and like a man determined to render eve
ry assistance in his power, seized the
struggling wight by the hair, and exclaim- t0
cd in the enthusiastic fervor of his benevo
lent soul,“Friend I’ll hejp thee in!” Now
whether there was a preconcerted signal—
as was the case with the veteran who en
tered the wolf’s deq.—we are not able to
say. Be that as it may, however, our he
ro’s associate, who was stationed witliout
the window, taking instant alarm, clung
to the heels, of his suficring friend, and
endeavoured to extricate him from Ins
perilous situation. And now, had some
mischievous wag.been present, who was
lover of fun, he might liavb enjoyed it to
his hearts content. To see a Quaker at
one end of a! living man, and a stout Jona
than at the other, both pulling with
their might must have been rare sport
deed. For some time the issue of the con
test remained doubtful—it was uncertain
which would prove the strongest man. At
length, however, the hair to which the
Quaker had grappled his fingers, lost its
hold of the skin, and the man without
& gained the victory.
8 The next morning, a man was seen in
the neighbourhood, who had suddenly be
come bald. The lock of hair left in pos
session of the Quaker, compared so ex
actly witli the little, remaining on the
man’s head, that he was immediately de
posited in the Windham Jail, till the pro
