The Boat Race.—The proposed race between a boat belmigin; ill- duties itio electors bad been pleased to ns- ,7. >r til nitt n spi ; « let utit a pa ti' i.& mil in i l.ii t0 l * lc A®.P* Hull Boatmen, called the “ American Star," taul a boat belonging to the British frigate Hussar, called the "Dart," took place and we lmvo the pleasure to state, was won by our countrymen. The distance tun was about four mill's. The race wa8 accomplished in 22 minutes— The American Star camo out about a <piar- icr of a mile, or two minutes ahead. \ gctJtlprpun who observed the race with-rcut nicety, remarks that the Amer ican Oarsmen lifted their onrs46 times in ., minute, tlfld the British 39 times. The Star wns rowed by Cornelius Cam- jneyer, Alfred Canuncycr, Richard Rob- ins, and Samuel lleaty.—John Magnus Coxswain. ‘ The English boat wns rowed by select men from the crew of the frigntc, und was steered hy Captain Harris. It should be noted, that the bont that Icat-is a benten boat, having lost a race soino yours since against the New York, The whole thing wns conducted with great good nature, anil the crew of tho iltissaris launch, cheered the victors man fully. . The victors rowed immediately after TOUnd Castle Garden, to Whitehall, where the boat was hoisted up, amidst tho rei terated cheers of the public, n band of music all the time playing, Yunlicc Doo die. Captain Harris; olid his officers and friends, have behaved so handsomely on this occusion, that we cannot permit our selves to exult at his defeat. Yet if it bo jojj said that the Star, hud the-advantage on account ofthe roughness of the weather, it must be replied, thut the 'Whitehall boat- men offered, as we are informed, to ex change bouts; and ran again the same hour, for tho same bet. DECEMBER IE ZaMflt/L—The Ship York, one of the. Packets, for the London Ljnc, to be com manded by Wm, Baker, will be launched from the ship yard, nearly opposite Col- Rutger’s bouse, this doy, at one O’clock, V. Mb Our statement diet the Whitehall oars men offered to exchange bouts with Capt. Harris, and -repeat the race Was incorrect. They inform Us that no such offer was made.—The crews of the two boats spent the evening in great harmony together, the winners having treated tho losers -ton sumptuous dinner nt Drozc&- IIey«ers, nnd accompanied them -to the Theatre in the evening. The ” American Star " that Avon the race from the British boat, will be brought <on the stage this evening, by her gnll&nt <crew, in the new Interlude of the Grand Canal, or Meeting of the Waters. Wc are glad to learn, that a public din ner is to be given to this galluut Captain Harris, of the British frigate Hussar, as on expression of feeling which lias been excited on account of his success against the pirates,' the protection of American lives and property, and ns an acknowledge-! oient of hia, acceptable deportment during his visit to this city, NEW YORK ELECTORAL COL LEGE. FROM THE ALBANY ARGUS. The Concluding Scene.—It is pleasant, in the midst of the contentions and rival ries which a highly excited President E- lection has produced, to recur to incidents such as tho following. It Will be recol lected that Col. Marinus Willet, presided at the late meeting of the Electors of this State, and that Chancellor Lunsiug per formed the duties of Secretary. It is as honorable to Mr Crawford and Mr Ad ams that two such venerable men and pat riots should represent their respective pre tensions, as the harmony and good feel ing with which they performed their du ties, were auspicious and gratifying. A short time previous to tho adjournment of the college, the following resolution was proposed and adopted. Resolved; That the thanks of the Elec toral College be presented to the venera ble Chairman and the Secretary, for the persevering and patriotic devotion to the .welfare of our common country, and for the liberality, and dignity with which they have respectively discharged their duties with honor to themselves and, as we hope, with the happiest result to the country, vjj, -.Upon which the Chairman, supporting ■ ( Jus enfeebled frame, by resting on the desk s fccforc him that hand which had gallant ly brandished the sword, and which bnd proved a shield to our borders in their ut most peril, observed: “ i’lie obligation is all on my side, for the honor arid attention I have received : mit having finished the business assigned to us, permit me, before we part,'to in voke the blessings of the Almighty Being, through whose kindness we enjoy tho most lice and liberal government in' tho world, securing an impartial administra- loii of justice, the greatest blessing next 0 the gospel, which any people enjoy, to grant to us, individually, that peace which tiio world can neither give nor take away “May you, my young friends, as the surest and most valuable road tohappincss a, id comfort, make it your study to dojus- kec, love mercy, and Walk humbly. 11 Gfid Almighty bless you all bless the oli, my soul, and forget not all his benefits! {’arewell.” 1 bis address, from a venerable man, 0n the utmost verge of life, and who lmd eminently distinguished himself in hit t-oiiuiry’s cause, to those who were pres- sintr with ardor into the vacancies which niie and chance were daily making in :he ^rov/d hastening in the same direction, oin those circumstances, from the pathos It3 delivery, and from the effect of asso- lf >tion, produced n considerable degree 1)1 emotion. . The Secretary said, that he received 1 iinueh sensibility the entirely uncx- thn t( !Ulc ^ highly valued approbation of nct’MiQr rn which Ije JiaJ executed the sign to bt^Of That it alVorded a subject of pleasin'.', reflection, that though from elections of ordinary interest, irritation hud itsperil; were scarcely separable, upon the present occasion the iiimost hafmufiy in the man ner had prevailed, which it was not pos- ible to exe.ci’d, tlioiiirli,' from the? ardent preferences which existed • on the subject if the ohoico among the eminent Citizens designated as candidates for the Highest offices in the gift of the nation, some such collisions might have been expected. That ns they parted with feelings of mutual good will, lie sincerely wished their hopes, on the subject of the result of the election, might he realized, and that they largely participate in tho happiness of theirooinniou country. GEORGETOWN, (S.C.) Dec. 15. Melancholy.—Oil the Sth inst. the house of Mrs Morton, a widow lady, of Marion District, with all her furniture in it, was burned to the ground and two of her children perished in the flumes.
