This communication was read and re
ferred to a select committee, who subse
quently presented n resolution, which was
adopted as follows:
* Resolved, That should the contempla
ted acquisition of territory, in the discre
tion of the Executive, require a called
session of the Legislature, the month of
[May would suit the convenience of the
niembera.
On the 14th the House took up the res
olution bflpred some days before by Dr.
Fort, iu the following words :
Wbercns it is important thnt the will of
the people should prevail in all important
elections, and in none is it more so than
in that of 1 reaidt nt oftbo U. 3.; and it be
ing manifest that Gen Andrew Jackson, if
tio'. the first, is decidedly the second choice
of the people of thi.-> State; and that liis
•popularity in a large portion ot’ the U.
States, and especially in that section in
which wc are placed, is far greater than
thnt of any other individual; and believ
ing as we* do, that on tins subject, we act
in coufdfroity with the wishes of our con-
elitucnts:
IJc it therefore resolved by the Legisla
ture of Georgia, That in the event of the
election of President of the U. States co
ming before the House of Representatives
and it appearing that Mr Crawford, who
has received the Electoral vote of tlii
State, cannot succeed to the Presidency
our Representatives in Congress be, and
they are hereby requested to give the vote
ol'this State to Gen. Andrew Jackson, he
being the second choice of Georgia.
And the same being read, Mr Foster, of
Greene, offered the following as a substi
tyte, to wit:
The General assembly of this Stale, having al
ready expressed by th? election of Electors of
Trcsiilent and Vice" r resident, its decided prefer
ce tor William H. Crawford for the Presidency
The Secretary of the Treasury in com
pliance with a rcsi-liiti. n of last session
made ft communication to the House of
Representatives oh the loth, showing the
annual and aggregate amount ofbonds
for duties upon foreign merchandize, from
3d March, 1789 to 31st Dec. 1823.
The whole amount of duties which ac
crued during that period, is $585,512,933;
of this 88,032,693 99 are estimated to
have been pajd in cash, and §527,180,230
87 were taken in bonds. Of the bonds
taken, 81,475,627 67 arc stated to be lost,
and8758,191 51 are considered doubtful.
The Secretary believe;* there would bo
no advantage in curtailing the credits now-
allowed to citizens for duties: hut thinks
there is no sufficient reason for continuing
to foreigners; ana submits to GinKres.
lie propriety of a discrimination in thG
respect.

By the Stephanie, from Havre, we have
rur Paris papers to tho 27th Oct. They
furnish very little intelligence. The late
King had been buried with great pomp at
St. Denis—not only the church, but the
whole town of St, Denis, ivas hung with
black. There are more particulars of the
success of the Greeks, hut nothin;: addi
tional of any importance. It-would seem
that the condition of our commercial
tcrcourse with France was under discus
sion in the Council of Ministers; with
what view, had riot traimuircd. Washing
ton Irving had issued the first four vol
umes of his compilation of the English
classics.
