means an uncommon thing to lock up the
doors where the workmen were and to
supply them with fond gratis, imbdtt to
save the time which would otherwise be
expended ih going to their respective
lodgings: Orders to immense amounts
were daily received at the manufacturing
towns, many Cf which Could not be ful
filled withiti the .prescribed period. Wages
were every where extremely high, and
mechanic:! were enabled to fare sum
ptuously fof severt days, out of the pro
ceeds of t\to day’s work. Even common
labourers werl’iu such tkjfntiiul as to cause

of the principals; bat if one of the com

A letter has been received by a gentleman ait
Norfolk, from tin officer on board tho. U. S. ship

which, informs that all were well on board, and

Cotton.—The heavy arrivals In the early part of
the week caused a temporary depression, and
the sales effected were limited and generally at

demand revived,' and during the last three days
very extensive sales, have been made, establish
ing an advouce on the prices'Of last Week of Ad
per lb in American and Egyptian, and ,) per ib in
Brazil descriptions, 20,600 bags have been taken
on speculation, viz. 10,000 American, 3tK)0 Bra
zil, 0,iKjO Egyptian and 1000 Carijiageiia. The
import is 30,187 bag*, and the sales amount to
31,944 bags.
