Timber; Measurers of Salt, Peat, Corn, and other
grain, and of Wood; Onagers of Liquors; and
, IVeignert of Colton, Bice, Tobacco and Hay
§ i: Beet ordained by tlic Mayor and Aldermen
of the city of Savannah, and the Hamlets thereof, in
Council assembled, and it is hereby ordained by he
authority of the lamtr, That from and aftcr-tho pas
sage and publication of this ordinance, no person
or persons whatever, except these' appointed by
the authority of this ordinance, shall measure car
goes of salt, peas,' corn, and other grain:, inspect
nnd measure boards, scantling, staves, shingles,
ranging timber, cypress logs, oak and other tim
ber; cord and measure wood; weigh cotton, rice,
tobacco and hay; or guage liuuors.
$ 2. And.be it further ordained by the authority
aforesaid, That at the nett regular meeting of
Council after the passage of tins ordinance, and
at the first regular meeting of Council in January
of each subsequent year, and on such other oc
casions as may be deemed necessary, tbero shall
be appointed not exceeding ten Measurers of
Lumber and Inspectors of Staves, not exceeding
three Measurers of Wood, not exceeding two
Onagers of Liquors, not exceeding ten Weighers
of Cotton, Rice, Tobacco apd Hoy. and not ex
ceeding fiveMeasurers of Sait, Pehi, corn, nnd
other grain: Each of whom, before entering
upon the duties of his office, shall .take nnd sub

Whereas, Lucinda Sheffield of said county, ap
plies for letters of administration on the estate and
effects of Isom Sheffield, late of said county, de
ceased.
These are, therefore, to cite and admonish all
and singula; 1 the kindred and creditors of the said
deceased, to file their objections (it any they have
in my office, on or before tbe first. Monday in
July next, otherwise letters of administration will

surer of salt, peas, corn, nudoilier grain, or wood,
shall enter into bond and security in the sum of
five hundred dollars; and ench person appointed
a Measurer and Inspector ot lumber, staves, shin
gles, and other timber, shall enter into bond and
security in the sum of one thousand dollars; and
ugeb person appointed a Weigher of Cotton, Rice,
Tobacco, and Hay, shall enter into bonds in tbe
sum of five hundred dollars; and each person ap
K inted a guager of Liquors, shall enter into bend
the sum of five hundred dollars, which bond
shall be taken in name of the Mayor and Alder
roep of the city of Savannah, 'and deposited with
the Clerk of Connell.
$ 4, And be it further ordained by Ihe authority
aforesaid, That each Measurer ana Inspector of
lumber appointed in manner aforesaid, and after
complying with the requisites of this Ordinance,
shall receive a license, and for tbe same shall pay
to the City Treasurer twenty five dollars for the
use of the city, and fifty cents for his own fees to
gether with the sum of one dollar to the Clerk of
Council for his fees. That each measurer of wood
shall receive a license, and (or the same jpay to
Ibe City Treasury the sum ot ten dollars for the
use of the City, and to the City Treasurer for his
fees fifty cents, and to foe Clerk of Council for bis
fees the sum of one dollar, and each measurer of
Salt, Peas, Corn and other grain, shall receive a
license and forth* same pay to the City Treasu
rer the sum of ten detain for the use of the city,
and 6Q cents for his foes, and $1 for foe fees of the
Clerk of Council, and each weigher of cotton
rice, tobacco, and hay, shall receive a license am
for the same pay to the City Treasurer the sum
of $25 for the use of the city, and 60 cents for his
fees, and to the Clerk of Council $1 for his fees,
and each guager of iiquora shall pay to tbe City
Treasurer the sum of $IO for tbe use of the city,
and 60 cents for his fees, and to the Clerk of
Council $1 for his fees, and each license shall be
signed hy the Mayor and attested by foe Clerk,
with th* seal of the city thereto.
§ 6. nnd be it further ordained by the authority
aforesaid, That each Measurer nnd Inspector of
lumber, staves,shingles, scantling, ranging timber,
cypress logs, oak and other timber, shall receive

pointed under and by virtue of this Ordinance,
shall be located in Market Square, and the others
at convenient plices, whose duty It shall be, upon
application for that purpose made to ’ them, to
weigh all such cotton, rice, tobacco, hay and o-
ther articles nreseatpd; for’ which they shall be
severally entitled td the following fees, to be paid
by the person or persons selling the same.
For each bale of coton, 64 cents, including por
tage and labour at the scales,

§ 11 And be it further rdaintd by the au
thority aforesaid, That the measurers Of salt,peas,
corn and other grain, appointed under the autbo-
rity of this Ordinance, shall, when called upon
for that nurpoee, measure all cargoes of sal;, peas,
corn and other grain landed from any boat or- ves
sel ; also, all salt, peas,.corn and other grain sold.
In this city, when the amount sold exceeds*.ne
hundred bushels, for which he shall be entitled
to receive 60 cents for every hundred bushels to
be paid by tbe seller.
§ 12. And be it further ordained by the authority
aforesaid. That any person or persons convicted
before the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Sa
vannah, of altering or changing any measurement
or weight, raade.under andby virtue of this ordi
nance, shall be fined in a turn not exceedlng:$30
to be collected bv warrant and distress as prescri
bed in (he amended charter of the city, passed by
foe general assembly in its session, in December,
1826; one half of said fine tp,gd to the use of tbe
City and the other half to the informer
§ 18. And be it further ordained by the authority
aforesaid, That every and each Measurer and In

convicted before the mayor ana aldermen of a
neglect or violation of his duties or the provisions
oi this Ordinance, shall be fined in a sum not ex
ceeding thirty dollars for every and each offence,
one half of said fine for the use of the cilr, tbe
other half to the informer, end if deemed necessa
ry by the said mnyorand aldermen, shall be dis
missed from office.
§ 14. And be it further ordained by the autho
rity aforesaid, That any person who shall Jiereaf
ter sell any lumber, ranging "or other timber,
staves, shingles, or wood, or cargoes of salt,
(except when measured by the officers of the
customs,) corn, pea* or other grain, without being
first inspected nnd measured by foe proper offl
cars appointed under this Ordinance, shall, upon
conviction before Council, be fined for each of
fence, in a sum not exceeding 30 dollars, to be re

receive from the seller, of said wood, the sum of

so measured, shall be four feel high, four feel
wideband eight feel' long; and shall be so mea
sured as to include in said measurment only one
half of the scarf. , . ,
§ 8: And be it further ordained, by the au

cleared at the Custom House of this District for
any port (other than a port in this State) shall
receive a certificate of the measurement of such
lumber, to which certificate when for a foreign
