September, 1828.
The following certificate givos the his
tory of the introduction of the Pnnacen into
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary.
Those who read it, will be convinced that
the proprietor |,as never fearod the invest?
gation of physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister tne medicine in secret. It alio
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
those who were so anxious originally to
exelude the medicine from this institution,
.would neglect ho opportunity of expelling
it, after it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City ol Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swnim, proprietor of a mbdical com
position called Swaim's Panacea, applied
to me, requesting me to state w|iat I know
about'the introduction of his Inoritcine into
the Alms House—and I consider it 'a duty
to comply with his request.
Being President of the Bonrd of Mnna
qra of x the Alihs House in the year 1820,
Ir. Swaim expressed to mo a wish to un
dertake (he euro of sumo persons then in
the house, whose cases were given np as in
curable by the medical gcntlempn, that he
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would require po
other compensation than the satisfaction
to bo derived from the service rendered.
I promised to consult tiro othei mana
gers, anil did so.; but I. found that some of
the medical, gentlemen in the house had
labored to prejudice them, as some of them
attempted to prepossess mo against wlmt
they denominated quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined to the trial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
tho medical men which wore to be opera
ted upon, no Perm at least would be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to bo afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
myself rvhntever responsibility there was in.
the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that-I
would accompany him,.and did so. The
first case selected was that of a woman,
whose appearance was horrible, and whose
condition was so deplorable that the'pa
tients in tho same room wished to have her
removed, andthe evidence of my own Sen
ses justified their ooinplnlnt- She was a
woman of uhotit 30 or 92 years of age, her
right eye was alredy cCstroyed, the left
eye protruded more than half an inch but
of the socket, tire flesh of the left cheek was
ana complete ulcer, the flesh of the nose
had disappeared and left the nostrils two
naked holes, the tippet lip on tho left side
was destroyed, and the teeth and gums
bare, and tho whole face, as it appeared to
me, in n stato of dissolution; her appetite
had left her—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Swaim said
he could euro her; he could not restore tho
lost eye,'nor restore the nose, but. he could
restore theleft eye andthe mouth.
He undertook tho ease, and I frequent
ly attended him in his visits to the poor wo
loan, and she was rured—nnd I havo fre-
•quently seen her since, going about her
ordinary business with the elaerity usual
to a person of that age; tho deformity of
cmirse'riimainod t but all that remained
besides appeared healthful. I have con*
fined myself to Hits case, upon which I
