My Panacea requires no encomium; its
astonishing effects and wonderful operation
have drawn, both frdm Patients and Meili

established for it a character which Envy’i
pen, though dipped in gall, can never tern-

The false reports concerning this valu
able medicine, which have been so di igenily
circulated by certain Physicians,have their
origin either in ENVY, or. in the nilsc' iev-

TIONS. .
The Proprietor pledges himself to the
Public, and gives them the most soletiTn
assurances, that this medicine contains
neither mercury nCr iny other deleterious
drug.
The public are cautioned not to purchase
my Panacea, except from myself, my ac-
qredt.ed agents, or persons of known os-
pectability: and all those svill consequent
ly be without excuse, who shall purchase
from any other persons.
WM. SVVAIM.
Septembet, 1888.
The following certificate gives the his
tory of the introduction of the Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary.
Those who read it, will be convinced that
the proprietor has never feared tho investi?
gation of physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
thoso who were so anxious originally to
exclude the medicine from this institution,
would neglect no opportrthlty of expelling
it, after It had been Introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Eiq.
One of the Aldermin of iiie City of Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a medical com
position called Swaim’s Panacea, applied
to me, requesting me to state what I know
about the introduction of his medicine into
the Alms House—and I consider it a duty
to comply with his requ -si.,
Being President of the Bqnrd of Mann
gers of th'e Alms House in the year t8S0,
Mr. Swaim expressed tome a wish to ttn-
ileiiake tlte cure of sonic persons thou id.
the house, whose cases were given up as.tn-
curablo by the medical gentlemen, that ho
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
tho most desperate—and would reqtiire.no
other compensation than the satisfaction
Jo be derived from the service rendered.
I promised to consult the otltei mana
gers, and did so,; hut I found that some of
the medical gentlemen in the house had
labored to prejudice them, as somcof them
attempted to prepossess me against what
they denominated qUackei'y. Som e of the
managers felt inclined to the trial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
the modinaT men which were to'be opera
ted upon, uo harm at least would be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to be afforded, but they expressed
a rolhetuuce to take any responsibility upon
them; by. which I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in.qppositibn to
the physicians; Others opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered-and took upon
myself wlmtever responsibility there was in
tho case, and notified- Mr. Swaim that .1
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case selected was that of a woman,
whoso appearance waj-Horriblei'and whose
condition' was so deplorable .that the pa
tients intlie sahte room wished to have her
removed, and the evidence of my owh sen
ses justified their complaint. She was a
woman of aboiit 80 or 32 years of age, her
right eye was alredy uestroyed, the left'
eye piotruded more than half an inch out
of the socket, the flesh of the left cheek was
one complete ulcer, the flesh of the itrtse
had disappeared arid left the nostrils two
naked holes, the uppef lip-on the left side
was destroyed,' and the'teeth and gums
hare, and the whole face, as it appeared to
me, in a state of’ dissolution; her appetite
had left her—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. , Mr.Swaim said
Jie coflld-curo her; he could not restore the
lost eye, nor restore the nose, but he could
restore tholeft eye arid the mouth.-
He undertook the case, and I. frequent
ly attended him in his visits to the prior wb
man,’ anti'she was cured—and I liavk fre
quently Seen her siride, going . about her
ordinary business with the alacrity- usual
to a person of that age; the deformity of
course remained ; but all that remained
besidesappoared lieaitljful. I have, eon-
fined myself to this case, upon which F
strictly correct. Mr. Swaiinhthbwcd me
two othor casos nearly similar, which wore
cured by his Panacea, after every other re-'
medy had failed. ‘
Averse as I am tq quackery, I.hope ev
er to be preserved from unjust and selfish
prejudice ; and, therefore, do not hesitate
to give my name, in confirmation ofthe ef
ficacy and safety ol Mr. Swalm’a r.icdi-

merous and frequently fatal. If is much
regretted that most verririfuges Dow in use
are injurious, apd thduiands'of children are
swept pff, rir are rendered feeble, pale and
enunciated through the first stage of life
—which leads on to pulmonary complaints
&c. bus. Sic.
Worms being .^specially apt to Infest
persons of debilitated digestive organs and
eitiaclated constitutions, much mischief is
often done by the ordinary worm medi
cines, which generally consist of the strong
est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, narco-
tics, or spirits of turpentine. Articles .of
this kind may destipy worms, but they de
bilitate the startiacl), and often materially
injure the goneral health. Swaim’s Ver-
mifuqe has the peculiar advantage of de
stroying and removipg. worms from the
bowels without the weakening consequen
ces of the stronger purgatives. &c.—ant
it has, moreover, a decided tendency to
give vigor bntluo the stomach and bowels
arid organs of digestion^—thereby relieving
the general system froiri many,troublesome
complaints. It fs by ibis menus that so,
many grown persons have been relieved,
by its use, of different complaints—supi

This medicine will relieve bowel com-
llaints or, dysentery, bilious cholic, vomit
ing, sickness, pain or weakness in the sto
mach or bowels, loss of appetite, either in
children or grown persons, in a frw hours
and it seldom fails curing chills and fe
ver OR FEVER aooe. No family ought,
or cvex will be withdijf it, after a trial..
Worms aro capable of producing great
disturbances in the system. Not only do
they aggravate ordinary diseases when they
are present, hut thoy also give rise to a
great varietjr.of very alarming anomnluus
affections'. The whole train ofspasinodic&
convulsive diseases may 1 'proceed from the
irritation of worms in the alimentary canal.
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, tetanus, pa
ralysis, mania, convulsions, as well as a
variety of other nervous and convulsive
affections, are not unfrequenlly the imme
diate effects of f this cause Besides these
diseases, worms have also been known to
produce pleuritic and rheumatic pains,dys
entery, remitting fever, dropsy of the brain,
chronic and spasmodic cough, &c. &c,
&c, . .
Among the symptoms which indicate
the presence of worms, the following are
tire most common arid striking:—A pale,,
leaden-coloured, and ucqasionnliy flashed
countenance; a bluish streak under the
eyes, these are dull and Heavy, the .pupils
are dilated and much contracted, the low
er eyelids and upper ,lip swell,, especially
during the night while sleeping; groat
itching in the nbslrils, which causes the
patient to pick' his nose; foul breath; dis-
tttrbfed sleep ; during which the patient
grinds his teeth, is apt to scream out and
start up suddenly as if frightened: tingling

being sometimes entirely suppressed, and
at others exceedingly voracious; abdomen
