FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of Ike City nj Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a medical com
position called Swaim's PanOcea, applied
tome, requestingine to state wliat I know
about the introduct ion of Ills medicine into
the Alms Mouse—and I consider it a duty
to comply with his requ -st.
Being President of the llnurd nf Mnna
gers.of the Aims Mouse in the year 1880.
Mr. Swaim expressed in me a wish to' un
dertake, the cure of si.me persons then in
tho house, who,© cases were given up as in
curable bv the medical gentlemen, that lie
was confident of curing by his medicine
those eases, ami would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would require no
other compensation titan the satisfaction
to be derived from she service rendered.
I premised tn consult the other mana
gers, and ilid so t but I found that some nf
tne medical gentlemen in the house had
labored to prejudice ihem, as some of then,
attempted to prepossess me against wliat
they denominated quackery. Sonic of the
managers felt inclined tn the trial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
Ihe medical men which were In bo opera
ted upon, no harm at least would be done,
und if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought'tu be afforded, but they expressed
n reluct.i'ncp to hike any responsibility upon
them; by wjiich I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Olliers opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
myself whatever responsibility theie was in
the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that 1
would accompany him. and did so. The
first case sclectqd was that of a woman,
whose appearance was horrib’e, and whose
condition was so doplurabie that the pa
tients in the same room wished to have her
removed, and the nvidonce cif my o.vn sen
ses justified their oomplaint. She was a
woman of about 30 or 88 yoars ofOge, her
right eye was alredy oestroyed, the left
eye protruded more than half an inch out
of Ihe socket, the flesh of tho left cheek was
one complete ulcor, tho flesh of Ihe nose
had disappeared and left tho nostrils two
naked holes, the uppei lip on the led side
was destroyed, and the teeth and gums
bare, ami the whole face,- os it appeared to
me, in a stato of dissolution; her appetite
had left tier—sho represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Swoim said
he could cure her; I10 could not restore the
lost eye, nor restore tho nose, but he could
restore theleft eye and the mouth.
lie undertook tlie case, and 1 frequent
ly attended himin his visits to the pour wo
man, and sho was eufed—and I have fre
quently seen her since, going about hei
ordinary business with the alacrity usual
tn a period of that age) tho deformity of
uilUrse remained.; 'but all tlmt remained
besides appeared healthful. 1 have eon

TIHS valuable Anti-dysen-
. Uric and /Form Medicine has
been used for these seven
yean past, and its virtues are
universally acknowledged by
all who have tried it, to be far superior to
any other medicine ever employed for.
nmst diseases children are subject to. It is
perfectly safe, and no child- will refuse to
take it. It sehlom fails epring Dysentery,
Summer Complaint, Colie or Cholera
Morbus, either hi grown persons or children
and It gives appetite to almost all debilita
ted persons. Worms frequently Infest chil
dren, aggravate their ntlier diseases, and
are the chief cause nf- must 'Metiers, bowel
complaints, and ehronlq anil nervous discos
es, incident tn childhood, which are so nn-
rperqps and frequently fatal. ' It it muah
regretted that most vermifuges now in use
are injurious, and thousands of children are
swept off, or are rendered feeble, pale and
enunciated through the first stage of life
—w hich leads on to pulmonary complaints
&c. Ac. &c.
Worms beiitg especially apt to infest
poisons nf debilitated digestive organs and
emaciated constitutions, much mischief is
often dime by the ordinary worm medi-'
clues, which generally consist nf the strong-'
est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, narco-.
tics, or spirits of turpentine.- . Articles nf
ibis kind may destiny worms, hut they de
bilitate the stomach, and often materially
injure the gonerul health. Swaim's Vkr-
siiruoz has the peculiar advantage'of de
stroying and removing worms from Ihe.
trowels without the weakening consequen
ces of Ihe stronger purgulives. Ac.—and
il has, moreover, a decided tendency to
give vigor belli tothe stomach and bowels
and organs nf digestion—thereby relieving
the general system from manv troublesome
complainia. Il is by this means that so
many grown persons have been relioved,
by its uSe, of different complaints—suppo
sin'.! themselves to be in a decline, St0. Ac
. This medicine will relieve bowel com-
; )laints or dysentery, bilious cholic, tiomit-
I ng, sickness, pain or weakness iri the sto
mach or bowels, loss of appetite, either .in
children or grown persons, in a few hours;
und il seldom fails curing c 11 ills and fe-
vf.r on FKVEn ague. -No family ought,
or ever will be withoig it, after & trial.
Worms are capable of producing; groat
Histurbanees in the system. Not only do
they, aggravate ordinary diseases when they
are present, but they also give .rise to a
great vorlcty of very alarming anomalous
affections. The '.vhololrain „fspasmodic A
cunvulsivc diseases may-proceed from the
irritation of w orms in the alimentary canal.
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, .lelafliis, pa
ralysis, mania, convulsions, as well as a
variety uf other nervous . and convulsive
affections, tire not unfrcquently the iiTnnc-
iliale effoctsof this cause Besides-these
diseases, worms have also been known to
produce pleuritic and rheumatic pains,dys-
enlciy. remitting fever, dropsy of the brain,
chronic and spasmodic cough, Ac. Ac.
Ae.
Among the symptoms which indicate
the presence of worms, Ihe following aro
the most common aiid striking: —A pale,
leaden-coloured, and occasionally flushed
countenance; a bluish streak under the
eyes, those are dull and heavy, the pupils
are dilated and much contracted,.the low
er eyelids and unper lip swell, especially
during the night uhile sleeping; great
itching in the nostrils, which causes the
patient to pick his nose; foul breath; dis
turbed sleep; during which the patient
grindsliis teeth, is apt tn scream om and
startup suddenly ns if frightened: tingling
in thccars; giddiness; interrupted speech;
palpitation of the heart a dry spasmodic
cough; irregular and depraved appetite,
being sometimes entirely suppressed, nnd
at others exceedingly voracious; abdomen
swelled and hard; looseness uf the bowels:
costiveness; unnatural, slimy,nr foul stools;
pains in tho bowels; wasting of tho flesh;
