evinces the prejudices of the facultyWhat
those who were so anxious originally, to
exclude the medicine from tills institution,
would neglect no opportunity of expelling
it, after It had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City oj Phi
MrfSwaim, proprietor of a medical com
position called Swaim's-Banaceu, applied
tn me, requesting me to state what I know
about the introduction of his mcdieine into'
the Alms House—and l consider it s duty
to comply with his requ -tt.
Being President of the Board of Mann
S ers of the Altos House in the year 18Z0,
Ir. Swaim expressed tn me a “wish to urn
dertake the cure nf some persom-then in
die house, whose cases wore given up as in
curable by (he .medical gentlemen, that he
was- confidtnt of curing .hy his medicine|
those -cases, and would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would require no-
other compensation, than the satisfaction
to bejderivcd from tho service rendered.
1 promised to consult (he other mans
gers, qnd-did so; hut I found tliatsouie of
the medical gentlemen, in Jhe house bad
labored to prejudice them, as some of them
attempted to prepossess me against what
they denominated quackery. Some of the
managers fult inclined to the trial, ennsid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
the tnedigal men which were to be opera
ted upon, noharm at least would be done,
nnd if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty tinght to b<Tnffbrdeil, lnu they expressed
a reluctance to take any. responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not like to-put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
myself whatever responsibility there was in
the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case stledtad was that of a. woman,
whose appearance washortib'e, and whose
condition was so deplorable that the pa-,
tients in the same room wished, to have her
removed, and the evidence of my own;scii;J
seq justified their oomplaint. 9he was i
woman of about 30 or 8Z years of age, her
right eye sv»s alredy destroyed, the left-
eye piotruded inert than half an inch nut
of Ihe socket, the flesh of the left cheek was
one complete ulcer* the'flesh of the nose
had.disappeared and left -the nostrils two
naked holes, the tippet lip on the*left side
was destroyed, and the, teeth and gums
hare, and the whole face, as it appeared to
me, in a stato of dissolution; her .appetite
had left her—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Swaim said
he could cure her; he could not restore the
lost oye, nor restore the nose, but. lie could
restore thelaft.eye and the mouth.
He undertook the case, and I frequent-
ly attended hup in his visits to Ihe poor wo
mnn,.and she was cured—and I have fro-,
qiicntly seen her since, going about her
ordinary business with the alacrity usual I
to a perspn of that nge; the deformity of
oourse remained.;.-but all .that remained.|
-besides appeared healthful. I have con
fined myself to this case, upon which )
was impossible to be mistaken, and for.-
Iiorne to intrndiico any other circqmslati-
ces.than what belong immediately to it.
