The following certificate gives the bis-
loryxffthe imrmluctirin of the Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary.
Those who read it, will lie convinced that
the proprietor has never feared the investi*
gation of physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
those who were so . anxiorif. originally to
exclude ihe-inedicine from this Institution,
would neglect no opportunity of expelling
it, rifrar it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City oj Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swaim, proprietor ofa medical com
position calj.ed Swaiiq's-Patncea, applied
tn me,'requesting mo to state what I know
about the introduction of his medicine into
the Alms House—and 1 consider it . duty
to comply with his request. .*
Being President of the Udnrd nf fifana
gers of the Alms I louse in the year 1820,
Mr. Swaim expressed In me a Wish to un
dertake the cure of some* persons then in
the house, whose cases were given upas in
curable by the medical gentlemen, that lie
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would Undertake sortie of
the most dpsperate—and.would require no
other compensation than The Satisfaction
to be derived-(Voin the service rendcredi-r-
I promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did so; but 1 found that some of
the medical gentlemen in the hou’se had
labored to prejudice them,-at some of them
attempted to preposjoirmo against what
they denominated quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined to the tfial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
tlie medical men- which were to he opera
ted jipon, ob liarnj-at least would be done,
and if.cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to b» afforded, but Miey'pxpressad
a rclubthuce to takeany responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not like to put themselves'ih opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed it alto-
'getlidr. I lliereforcr offered 1 and took itpou
myself whatever responiibilitfMheie was in
tilie case,' and notified Mr. Swaim- that I
would accompany him, and did* so.- The
first case selected was that of a woman,
whose, appearance wav horrible, and wiiose
condition was so deplorable that the pa
tients in the same room wished to have her
removed, and the evidence of my oarn sen
ses justified their oomplaint. She was a
woman of about 30 or 32 years of age. her
right eye was alredy destroyed, the left
eye protruded more than half an inch out
of the socket, the flesh nflhc left cheek was
unc complete ulcer, (he‘flesh of the nose
hgd disappeared and left the nostrils two
pfiked holes, the upper lip on the left side
was destroyed, and the teeth and gums
hare, and the whole face, as it appeared to
me, in a state of dissolution;'her appetite
had loft het—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Bwaim said
lie could cure her; he could not restore the
lost eye, nor restore the nose, but lie could
vestore.-lheleft eye and the moitth.
» He undertook tho case, and I- frequent
ly atiemled him in bis visits to the poor wo
.mmr, andjjhe,was cured—and I have* fro-
.quently sebrt her since, gbing pbput her
■ordinary business with the -alacrity usual

poiirsfe remained; but all that remained
