TFKHDAY EVENING. Nov. 3. Hy the lliig Lydia, Capt. Wood, arrived this morninc from New York we have been furnished with file* of papers of that city tO the 27th nit. Inclusive—-ihe same dates as had been previously received by the Ma con. Comnioil morning in Charleston, to rei •that station. Wc have receive I a letter fionr an old subscriber on Cumberland Island, com plaining of on irregularity in delivering his papers'from the ppat-oCSce in St. Mary’s. \s this moil is weekly. our habit lias always been to fold tlm three country papen is sued during ‘hit time, together; jiliclui tfie direction on the cxternnl one alone.— Those without a suporscriptinn. it appear ■tro netcr received. We would request from the Postmaster,’that’ the integrity of our packages shouldbe preserved, and dltr siihscrihcr will nnttlicti hare cause for com plaint.—This is tho only instance in which our method of forwarding papers by this mail, has resulted in irregularity in receiv ing them. _ I Oar oicn city.—The return of wintSr has recalled our migratory population, who during tho summer months, have visited our northern hrethrren, as hcallh. or plea sure. or business directed them. 'Our city again presents a scene of hustle and aetiv- ity Many new mercantile houses have her n established and the importation of goods of ail descriptions,is unusually large holding oht to purchases, bv the conse quent competition, prospects of rich bar gains. Piobably our market never has been better supplied, and notwithstanding the lowness of the riser a very considerable Quantity of the nose crop of Cotton has ret: !u-J us. Tho improved condition of both the English and French markets for nor st ipte is like'sisc cheering to Planter ami ' etch, lilt. We think there is before ui a prospect of a brisk and profitable trade, and our ci ty will again assume that prosperous station .to which her resources and enterprise enti tle her, and from which for a time, an ad ventitious combination cif circumstances hare removed her. We extracted yesterday, from an Augits- : ta paper an articlo rclatiro to Col. Jones’ sugar crop, at Millhaoen, in Scriven coun ty. Wc had tlte pleasure of seeing Col. Jones in this clty las’ »eek. and bad a free’ conre sailon with him oiTthe sdbject of this he* article of Upland' culture The in formation derived from him may not be unimportant to many of our leaden, par ticular J < os this gentleman is one of the most scientific planters 61 oar acquain tance. Theland he cultivates ispina bar ren bj no means of the best quality, and which hat been tilled for the last twenty Jean. But Co1. Jonas, following the ex- qmpje of his father, never hat neglected to manure his land, and be cultivates no more ofitthanhecan thus.enrich. He there fore never expends llbor without being compensated fur it, and from hit manage-, ment almost renders himself independent of the seasons, for when shey are untoward, there is a stamina in the soil which endures privation, when other of a more neglected character suffers. His first experiment was made last year, qqdthe product was as fine probably as any ever raised |u the state. The past season has been unfavorable, for he stated tO'Ut, that his crop last June was no higher than, in tho preceding year, it was in April. But still his returns will be ample. The ex- penso of machinery for preparing the so fur has been exaggerated. Col. Jones' mill which is worked by. water power, in cluding byihirs and tile rest of the apparat us, posts him less than S1000, and ho con siders the mill oapable of expressing the iuice from the product oft 00 acres, In the season. The additional Doilers required, for this quantity would not extend tlte ex -pens, over JIOO. We understand that many planters iq Striven and Burke have directed their at tention to thisarticle, and with every pros pect of complete success. Silk,—'The culturo of this article in our -state has not been followed to (he extent, -which, tho interest it at one time excited, promised. In Pennsylvania, and many other Northern states societies have been (ormedfor the purpose of promoting so advantageous a branch of traffic, and the lolloping remarks- which we find' in n North .Carolina p iper may well be addres sed to the citizens of our own state, "If the manufacture of sewing silk be not desira ble, the raw silk may be made and exported (p England, whore H would meet with a sale, as the manufacture!-r of that country. The pro duction of silk by them therefote, will be a clear gain, tho business being chiclly at tended to by aped persons and children.— Wli.it a gratifying revolution would be ef fected in our state, if the people would raise silk and let it constitute tho circula ting medium, or the principal one, ns is the rase in somo parts of Connecticut* The •keepers there, take in sewing silk at lar price per sk«in, the size of which is le^ulated by Jaw, furnish goods in ex change, and give tho balance, if any, in money. n conscifuenct of tlu'ir having omitted or glected to give in a reasonable time in ion of their proceedings in relation bill, rtnd of its ultimate fate, atevrr a bank nude takes to do for a itnr, it must do w ith fidelity, diligence ill; tho sumo principle applies hc- . , . tween hanks eoi responding and doing busi- ‘“““V’ 1 "'’ : ne» will...eh other. Somo other points of minor importance occurred in tho course of this tiial, which were discussod by tin* coHiist I with ability, and decided by the judge. Mr. Coa}*r.—'This veteran votary of Melpi imeno is now performing in Boston, and with the same applause that crowned his meridian efforts. His Virginiusis par ticularly extolled, nnd indovd we think in that character hestands alone. The Bos- torf Statesman pays to his merits tho fol lowing jmt tribute. "Accustomed as wc have been to see Mr. Cooper in the part ft tun year to year, ve could perceive no falling off from his original excellence; on the contrary, a decided improvement both in the study and manner. There was the same majestic tread, the same sustain ing nnd extraordinary ;|rhysir.al power, the same effectual Yorce, we have witnessed In his'former exhibitions. It is indeed a Subject of surprise that one who has been ail actor for thirty rears and upwards should still posses) tint exquisite syinnic- tty nf proportion, expression of feature mid power of voice, which firit recommended him to public favor; yetall this is strictly correct in reference to Air. Cooper*, late appearance in Virginia.” A correspondent of the Raleigh Register states that he lately witnessed the extrac tion of oil from cotton seed. The product was threo quarts of oil, from a bushel of unhuRed seed. -It is -slid, that this oil •eenn to answer as well as any, for ma chinery purposes, aifdSfor'tha consumption of I-amps, it isbotleved to be equal to the best Spermaceti; while it is nowise -inferi or to Linseed oil In Palming. To the attention of Mr. H. Jenkins, su percargo of the brig Hope, (arrived below fiom Itlode Janeiro.) tho editors of the American are indehted for papers of that capital and commercial advices to the 1st tilt, A letter to thu editors, from one of Ihpir correspondents at Kin. says, under date of Slit Aug :—■"Tim ship Gen. Put- nstn, in S days from Buenos Ayres, brings dates to the 18th August. No melioration had taken place in Buenos Ayres, in rela tion to the unsettled state of the country— The elections-have taken piece, but as the. deputies elect were composed of a major! ty ofLavalle’sparly, the others thought (hat some unfair conduct had been practis ed, and again renewed hostilities. In con sequence, however, of a victory having been obtained by the Rnenns Ayrr.ru army over that of the Province of Cordova, and affairs there having become settled, Rosas permitted the communications which lied been interrupted between Buenos Ayres and Chili,to beopenedagain. Anew c- lection was- to take placo in August, which it was hoped would prove satisfacto ry." Extract of a letter dated BUENOS AYRES, Aug. 17th, 1019. Our political afTalrt remain unsettled, and unless soon arranged our currency must feel the effect by a farther deprecia tion. Producers very scarce, no .-.tiling going on, and no killiog of cattle, except tor daily consumption. Very few Imparts from the country. In relation to affairs al Rio do Janeiro, a letter under date of Slst August says ‘.’Things are not as they ought to be. A very strong party exists here in lovor ofnn absolute monarchy, having on its side a number of emigrant military characters from the mother country. On the *7th Inst, one of the Deputies, an editor of ta lent, was attacked by two ruffians in open day. while on his way from the cortex, and almost killed. He had expressed his sen timents freely in the debates. It is laid that the attack was made at the instance of a person hitch in potter. The affair has caused great excitement here." Balt. Singular Circumstance.—Five Rattle- shaken, being on exhibition at tho Nuvv England .Museum, on Tuesday, for tho purpose of trying their (temperament, a mouse westhrowu into the glass caso in which thoy ere confined. Tlio whole pro cedure, it seems, was narrowly watched by a cat, which on seeing the late of the mouse, niado a sudden leap through tlrb glass amuug the serpents, and boro off tho mouse unharmed.
