ihnltho American Minister is using his
best endeavors with the Hoard of Trade,
mid we nre sorry to add «itli~smno proba
bility of success, to throw open tho West
India trndo to the Americans again. This
is all very natural, and very proper for an
American Minister; and though we should
not, blame Hie agent; ho lias not only a
right, but it is.his duty- to do his best for Ills
country ; and in SO doing, lie difkfeivos the
thanks of his countrynlcn, without justly
liicui ring tho blanto of any one. Thero Is
however annlltor psrty engaged in this af
fair, whoso conduct ns a British subject
appears to us, if wo have been rightly in
formed, tn say the icajrof it, to be very
equivocal. A lovigresidcncc abroad never
might to have the effect of making a nivn
forget the Intelest of his own country, more
particularly if lie sliuiild happen to be tlie
humble servant of'that country. Ill Ihc
case before us It mar lie that the gentleman
has been misled ; Ills cqnditct may. proceed
from erroneous opinions with regard to
what are tho interests of the country, and
promises of reciprocal advantages may
liavo been held nut, such as a modification
of the Tariff,'&C. Blit ih a government
like that of the United States, promises
might not tn lie depended upon; for though
Ihe executive mny niCnn what they say.
yet it should ho reCnlloclod that they havo
no powor of themselves tn effect any tiling
of the kind, and very liitlo influence to in
duce the oilier brandies -if the government
to carry into effect tlioir measures.
| Besides, experience ought to tench ns
not to place much, if any, reliance or
Trans-atlantic promises ; and as for reci

indeed a mastcrpicco of statesmanship ;
nnd wc have no hesitation ill saying that it
raised this country in the opinion nf tlio
Americans greatly, as it was detrimental
to their interests more Ilian any thing that
had occurred for ninny ycUr*. Tlicro was
promptitude and decision about it which'

lie was r.ompellort reluctantly to ticknoivl
edge Mr. Canning had the best of fire ar

do nope and trust that our government will
not suffer themselves to be talked into a
repeal of this most salutary measure—a
measure calculated tn Uphold that which
must ever be of p/imaiy importaq’ce to
