right—to gild what hat been dark, and

our choice, administered bv those whom
we have seleot«.l, all is afforded to os that
wisdom, and vlrtuo in polities can yield.
In this matter we Aro peculiarly happy—
positively In the privileges and enjnyuioot

an example to other nations to wlmm we

We are at pends with the world, and all

filled to our content.
Let ns then, on the notnmencemMd of a

that flowed upon the past, and stnva to mer
it for the next an equal reward.
We cannot close our remarks, without
making an offoruigtoour friends,of sincere

of perhaps the most memorable day of this -
protracted Convention.
Il was interesting on many accounts.
The J’jtTI-S'bsorblng question” of the Basis
of Representation came op again tn be de
cided. The ayes and noea were 'called Se-
vkn timet during the day. The question
resumed a vnrfotyctformv. The sente of
the CohvontlJU was frikd on Mr. Leigh’s
scheme of representation. It was tried on

And finally tl;o cnly proposition for the
Basis of Representation, which was found
to unite a majority of voles, was Mr. Gor
don’s resolution, which adopted no speci
fied basis, and provided for no prospective
apportionment.—This resolution prevailed
by a majority of 14 voles.
But what made this day still more inter

to address the House, lie rose to give his

Yesterday, a new scheme for fiildrd ap

motion failed by a tie of thu House—and
then the resolution itself for appointing

Extract from the notes of ah observer.
When Paine had fallkA Into disrepute,
and was thnnnkd by the more respectable
of his friknJSon account of his ilrbnken
habits, he boarded in the house of tmo C
w„i ,. a farrier. This C-— and I, boing
acquainted, I had fteq access lA his house,
and frequently ‘ektted to converse will.
Torn Paine. One evening he related the
following anecdote. ,
During the slaughtery of llohctplkrro,
when eYWv republican that the monster
could get in his power was bcheadkd,
Paine was east into priwh, and his reme
was on a list with uWtetken who Wars order
ed for execution next Morning. It wns
customary for the clerk of the tribunal to
go round Die cells at night, and put a cross
with chalk on the back of the door of such
of the prisoners es were ordered for the
scaffold in tha morning. When the oxaett
tloner catne with hit guard to retttovo the
rintims, wherever a chalking was fonnd,
Ihe iAmate of flit cell was taken forth anti
executed.
In theto horrible shamble), there wns a
long gallery, haring a Vbw of eells on each
si do. The passage was Secured at each
and, but tho doors of the ceils were left
ten. and sometimes tho prisoners stepped
nto the rooms of one another for company.
It happened on the night preceding .the
day appointed for the doom Of Paine, that
he had gone into hit neighbor's coll, leav
ing his door opon With its back to the wall.
Just then the chalkor cartte past, and being
probably drunk, crossed tho iusido of tlm
cell door.
Next morning, when the guard canto
with an order to bring out the twenty vic
tims, Panic being in lied and lilt door shut,
they took a prisoner from rite farther end
ol the gallery, and thus made up the requi
site number.
About forty.elght hours after this nttro-
eus deed, Robespierre .wak overthrown)
his own head chopped off, sd that Paine
was set at liberty, and made the bevt of
his way to New York.
