Auzutta, Dee. 59, 1830.
Mr F.ditoe—I take pleasure in calling
your attention to Ihe fact, that the spirit of
pet reverence in e good cause, has given the
town hnilder, Mr. Hepry Shultz, a com
plete victory oYvr a nine years persecution
In the year 1ZII, he founded the twon of
Hamburg, in the face of that wealths ritv
Augusta: the Legislature of this State
granted him, the same yetr, a loan nf SO,
000 dollars, to aid him in his hold underta
king; for srhichgbe gave a mortgage of hi-
interest in said town, to Ihe State. The
Legislature in 1829, ordered his interest
said town to bo sold, and appointed him
one of the commissioners for that purpose,
Tho whole of the original town was sold
lor 4 division between all the parties
ce-t/cd therein. The State became the
purchaser, and the Legislature, at its late
sesaion, but ordered all the interest cf the
Stale in the said town of Hamhur",tn he
conveyed to ill founder, Mr. Henry Shultz
on his paying at any lime within two years
the original sum of bo.noo dollars, and the
present purchase money, releasing all the
interest of the said loan. They .have,
moreover, appropriated money to pny in
su-ancejnn the property, opening and nu
king streets, repairing houses, &c. end
have authorized the bank nf the State of
South Carolina, to establish a branch of
that institution in said lawn. This must
certainly be considered a wise and gener
ous act of a Legislature to reward indivi
dual enterprise, Th*r« is rarely one
among a thousand, who enjoys the benefit
of his genius, talent and enterprise. The
following jost tribute from Jltdge Earle,
in his Report as Solicitor for the Western
Circilit, respecting the before i,anted trans
action, I beg you to insert in your paper,
The opinion lie expresses, the Legislature
have promptly verified by their acts.
“I cannot conclude tills report without
expressing the high sense which I cater-
tain of the serrices of Mi. Shultz, who
has been associated with me in all the im
porianl and difficult parts of the trausac,

this tort—his zeal, ardor, industry—his
knowledge cf business and sf men, hare
enabled him to render ine essential aid,
without which I could not have succeeded
so well as I trust 1 have done, in accotn
plisliing the objects which the Legislature
teemed to hare had in view, and which
were committed to my charge. 1 feel as
sured iliat Mi. Shultz has excited ail his
ability to promote the interest of the State,
in this matter, honestly, punctually and

that probable hia opinions upon the sub

from the Catholic Miscellany of tho (3th

THE SERMON AT COLUMBIA.
We find that an extremely erroneous
impression hts been created hy a passage
in a letter from a correspondent ie Colum
bia, printed in the Mercury newspaper of
this city of tho !3tb inst. The phrase was
that “Bishop England preached a strong
state rights sermon in the hall of the house
of Representatives." We saw the paragraph
ptevious to our last publication; and were
somewhat astonished at lit appearance—
We could not however then undertake to
contradict the assertion, though tha do
seription of the sermon furnished by nur
own cot respondent, whose communication
we laid before our readers, would lead us
to suppose that the correspondent of the
Mercuiy was in error. We took an early
opportunity nf shewing the statement in
the Mercnrv to the Bishop after his arrival

Oltl MaiJl—We never could, fn; the
life nf us, petceire why old oiaidt should
matiifcsl suclt a mortal antipathy in old
bachelors. There is no reason io their
wrath. ’Tis spiteful, cruol, and uncalled
for—the trampling on a reed already bro
ken. It is abusing a man for the fault nf
his destiny. It lg,likc"fingeiiig a cripple
<ith hrro-n crutches because lie is lame—
Few men are bachelors of rheb owm fiec
will. Go to the vejiest misanthrope among
them, and ask him of hia history, and tie
will toll you of the'unfnrgotten hours of
liss early affection; and hia eye wdl light
up again with its wonted energy, at he re-
