MEXICO^,
AND THE aURROVNDjgfcsCBNEllY,
Square of Canvass,
iff Robert Buufoiid, Esq.
From Drawings made on the spot, at the
request af the, Mexican Government, by
, Mr. Wui. Bullock, Jun, ,
fJlUIS splendid Pictyre is now prepa-
H, red for the inspection of the public,
on the lot owned by Mr. Wald burgh, at
the junction of South Broad and Barnard
streets, in a large building of octangu-
bar formation, const meted for (he purpose
of diffusing or concentrating the U^bt, as
the separate objects in this gorgeous city
and |ts luminous environs for thiity miles
round, must obviously require. Durford,
who is acknowledged to be the first Panor
amic Painter in the world, was engagod in
perfecting this work; and tho governors
and other natives of Mexico, as well as oc
casional residents, uniformly admit, that
this great artist has been correct and min
ute in the endless details of the picture, as
he was undoubtedly happy in its most beau
tiful and magnificent outline. As a work
of art, this splendid representation of the
greatest city of the South, merits an eleva
ted rank. r t*lie view presented is undoubt
edly correct, and the painting of great ex
cellence. Tho delicious golden haze of a
tropical atmosphere, is finely preserved;
and the just management of light and shade
with the exact drawing and perspective.—
The true keeping and the luxurious repose
thrown over the whole, almost produce the
effect of illusion. Tho view is from the
top dfa grand Cathedral in the fcentre of
the city, forming one side of the square in
which Itwrbide erected his famous Circus
foi the exhibition of popular sports, bul'
baiting, &c. Prom this eminence thel
spectator looks down into the square and
tho Circus, alive with processions, sports
and business, and out, over the flat ruofed
dwellings of tho city, interspersed with
magnificent domes and church towers, to
the surrounding plains, the lake and encom
passing marshes, and rests his eye lipon
the abrupt and lofty mountains, globing
with Richness and beauty. *
