PANORAMA
OF THE SUPERB cflY OP
MEXICO,
AMD TIIE SURKODItDIKO SCENERY,
Painted on 1,700 Square feet of Oanvau,
By Robert Uurford, Esq.'
From Drawings mude on the spot, at the
request cf the Mexican Government, bu
Mr. Wm. Bullock, Jun.
T HIS splendid Picture is now prepa
red for the inspection of the public,
on the lot owned by Mr. Waldburgh, at
the junction of South Broad anil Barnard
streets, in a large building of octangu
lar formation, constructed for the purpose
of diffusing or concentrating the light r es
the separate objects in this gorgeous city
and its luminous ainvirons for Unity miles
round, must obviously require. Burford,
who is acknowledged to be the first Panor-
amic Painter in the world, was engaged in
perfecting this work; and the governors
and'.nlier natives of Mexico, as well as oc
casional residents, uniformly admit, that
this great artist has been correct and min
ute in the endless details of the picture, as
he was undoubtedly happy io its most beau
tiful and magnificent outline. As a work
of art, this splendid representation of the
greatest city of the South, merits an eleva
ted rank. The view presented is undoubt
edly correct, and the painting of great ex
cellence. Tho delicious golden haze of a
tropical atmosphere, is finely preserved;
and the just management of light and shade
witli the exact drawing and perspoctivo.—
The true keeping and tho luxurious repose
thrown osei the whole, almost produce the
effect of illusion. The view is from the
lop of a grand Cathedral in the centre of
the city, forming one side of the square in
which Itarbide erected his famous Circus
for the exhibition of popular sports, but’
baiting, Sic. From this eminence lliel
spectator, looks down into the square and
the Circus, ilive with processions, sports
nnd bushiest, and out, over the fiat roofed
dwellings of the city, interspersed with
magnificent domes nnd church towers, to
the surtnunding plains, the lake and encom
passing marshes, and rests his eye upon
the abrupt and lofty mountains, glowing
witli richness and beauty.
