the following summary of the Correspon-

uadi
It is the most earnest wish of thePresi-
dent, that the present unhappy difficulties
in South Carolina should be' terminated
without any forcible collision—-and it is
hir determination, that if such collision
•does nccor, it wifi not be justly imputable
to the United 8tates. He ie, therefore,
desirous that in all your proceedingt.while
you execute your duty firmly, you act
with as much discretion nod moderation
as possible.
“Self defence 14 a right belonging aa
much to military bodica as to individuals;
and officers, commanding separate forts,
are responsible, at all times, for their de
fence, and are bound to use due precau
tion to avoid danger. If a body of armed
men approach Sullivan’s Island, with ap
parently hostile views, it will be proper to
pursue’the course indicated by you to Co).
Bankhead. That is,’to warn their com-
(banding officer to retire, aod to iuform
him of the course which you will be com
pelled to adopt, in the event of his con
tinued approach. Should this warning be
useless, and the armed body attempt to
land, you wiii be justified iu resisting
such- attempt. Butbeforo this un
fortunate alternative is resorted to,
rely upon yonr patriotism and
discretion, to endeavor, by all rea
sonable nnd peace bis means, to indace
any such armed body to abandon their en*
terpiye. The a abject is committed to you
in the full cobviction, that while you dis
charge ynur duly as an officer, yon will be
mindful of the great delicacy of the sub
ject, aud of the anxiety of the President to
avoid, if possible, a resort to force. But
whatever the rights of self deleuce require
must be done, should a case occur involv
ing such a question.**
••The course you have directed respect
ing those officers.ifany there be who hcri
tate in their allegiance to their country in
the hour of trial and peril, meets the en
tire approbation of the President 1 flatter
myself that none such will be found; but
if there are, they should be immediately
known, when thrir cases will become the
gubject of special consideration.”

extraordinary intellectual endowments,but
rather that of a clear headed, patient, per

I was assured that ho was sometimes

doubtless a we!! informed man, and fully
adequate to the mastery of any subject,

glowing impression.
Mr. Poindexter, of Mississippi, com

his complexion swarthy, his little sharp
grey eye fixed deeply in its socket, and
“shining like a good d«-ed io this naughty

strongly marks him for t sinewed crafty
man. 1 believe it does not belie him.—
Ilia oratorical powers are by no means re
markable, his shrill sharp voice tails upon

country, were disposed to save themselves
by delivering him up to cite sheriff. For
this purpose they had been endeavoring
for n day or two to obtain an interview
with him, and were on the night aforesaid,
King about his residence waiting his re
turn home. The night was pretty dark,
and about 9 o’clock five of the individu
als of the company were setting upon the
ground in a rotj, leaning back against an
out house, when Barksdale suddenly ap
peared a few paces in front of them and
presenting bis gnn hailed them with a
fiendish yell One of the company in a
friendly manner begged him not to shoot;
nevertheless, with his gun s till presenting
he stepped briskly back a few paces to get
them all in a range and fired upon them.
Mr. Jones was killed instantly, haring re*
ceined 40 small shot and two slugs that
passed through his right arm and entirely
through his chest, one of the slugs proba
bly passed through his heart. Mr. Pey
ton Harris was also severely wounded in
the head and face with small shot, and his
situation is considered critical. Mr.
