The Columbus Sentinel of Friday last,
•contains the following;
The town ofColiimbits has been, since Mon
day hist, iua martial attitude. On the night of
that dny an express was received by Maj. Gen.
Me Dougald, that a strong party of Creek Indi
ans, amounting to botweon threo and five hun
dred, had arrived at Bryant’s ferry, about 15
njilos below this town ou tho Chattnlioochie. tn-
ken forcible possession of the flat, and passed o-
ver*to the Georgia side oftlio river. Gen. Me-
Dougald upon this information, immediately
gave orders to tho volunteer corps and uiilttia of
tho town, to muster utlO o’clock ou tho succeed
ing day, for tho purpose ol' organizing for the
jnolectiou oflho place, since winch lime the citi
zens have been constantly under arms, muster
ing each day and patrollingat night. On Tues
day rumors camo mutating that they intended to
attack tho town that night; but thus fur we aro
djapny to say no hostile demonstrations have o-
jpanly been manifested towards tho place. The
oxact intention ol’the Indians are not known,
(hough hostile wilhoutn doubt. Tho citizens aro
doiug every tbiug in their power to nut tire town
in a state ofdefcnco, nnd give the Iu.Jiuns a warxu
reception should thoy comb upon us.
The melancholy tusk already devolves upon us
of reporting the loss of two lives bv those mur
derous savages. As near ns wo could gather the
facts attending this butchery, thov are those Tho
citizoua of tlie vicinity, hearing of tho hostile in
vasion of tlie Indians, assembled to the amount of
about thirty, and proceeded towards tho plnce
«?hero they understood they wore. As they np-
pronchedju party, supposed to be about fifty in
number, tho Indians hoisted a red flag, and the
whites continuing to advnnco towards them, thoy
took to the thickets and commenced firing. Mr.
Johnson and Mr. McBride, both citizens ofthis
county, wore killed, and Judge Spears received
three wounds, which it is feared will prove mor-
til. John H. Watson of this place, (who it will
be recollected by onr readers proposed iu our
•last to raise a body of volunteers for Florida) was
•sent down by Gen. MtcDouguld, to reconnoitre.
Ho commanded iu the engagement, nud is said
to have acted with the utmost intrepidity. He
received five bullets in different parts of his clo
thing, but fortunately none entered his body.
Two of the Indians were killed, one by the baud
of Mr. Watson. 3
On tho news-of this rencontre nt Columbus,
.■which was brought by Watson, Col Bntos raised
a party ofabout thirty volunteers, took tho steam
er Anno Calhoun then lying at tho wharf, nnd
proceeded down tho rivor, to the scene of action.
Tho Indians Imd removed, but they found fhe
bodies of the unfortunate deceased, Johnson
most horribly butchered and mangled, which they
brought to this place ou the next day and inter
red. Thebndy of MoBritb escaped mutilation,
having been dragged by Watson to a place of
concealment.
■Since writing the above, we liRve called upon
Gou. Me Dougald and received from him the fid-

the cocks crowing, nud the hens chicking! But
not a living mortal of a fowl havo wo seen in the
whole voyage, except a poor, miserable, half-
starved chicken, which tho sailors said belonged
to one Mother Carey; much good may she get

Dear Mrs. Butternut, I must leave off, fori
can’t say any more, only that if f was oncu more
safe nt home, I should he ns happy as a clam at
high water, as tho sailors say. l (iko to have for

when it was blowing a cal’s paw, nnd was nil
crumpled up to smash, so that I never paw any
