tain gap! the olementul war has prostrated all
its beauty of foliage—the voice of industry iu
hashed—the rustic cnecade seems to leap less
merrily limit it was wont, ond tiro once buoyant
air is heavy nnd oppressive with the murky yav

When ar in what manner ihe ravages will be
stopped, is a matter of uncertainly, and equally
so is it whether human ingenuity can restrain
them.* In the mean time, the Ions of time und

Upou this, Sally looked uo, and I asked her
how long she had known Mr. Curry.
Sally began twisting a gold ring that was ort
the forefinger of her left hand, and said—
‘My nioiher, ma’am, was a poor woman in
Salem, the widow of a sou-captain. He Wuslost

might come and welcome.
That was my forlorn night, but Mr. Curry
helped me a sight. My mother Was in a fain)

‘Tho day was just dawning, when my mother 1
seemed to come to a little, mid spOke right out,-
Sally, dear?’
•What mother?’ snys f, and my heart beat a*
if il would come through.
•Is there any body with you?’ said she.
•Yes, my dear mother, a friend,’ says I, whis
pering,
‘Will lie take cnre'of you7' said she, nnd aha
looked with a sunken eye full on Curry.
‘Curry got right up,and came by the bedside,
and knelt down, and took her lliiri hand, and
suid, in a voice quite loud and solemn,, ‘1 will
take enro of her, so help me God.’
•She didn’t say another word, but just gave rt
kind of sigh, as it wore, not sorrowful, but as if
she was satisfied, and squeezed his hand, andiso
