OPIUM.
This is n new chem c.iijprenarntion, containing
all the valuable McdicWl qualities of Opium,
in a Natural stale of Combination, to ilia cx.
elusion of its Noxious principles.
LI* proportions oftho greatest number
JL .ofthe noxious principle* of Opium, are
contained in Laudanum, Pnrngorlo, Black.drop,
Deuarcotixed Laudanum. Lxtract of Opium,and
such other opi ito preparations of this class liitlu
erto made, and to which- nro justly attributed
those disagreeable effects upon tho stomach and
nervous system, which so frequently follow their
operation, and limit their usefulness.
This F.lixtr mav be adapted in all those cates
in which either Opium or its preparations are
administered, with the certainly of obtaining ull
their sedative, anodyne and auti'tpasmodie ef*
feels, without any nl these disagreeable conse
quences, of headwtclro, nausea. vomiting, com
slipattoit, tremors, and a tram of other unhappy
symptoms, which are often ns distressing us
those which it was applied to remove.
The F.IUtr ofOpium is not only superior to
the artifirial compounds of Morphine, in its bo*
ing more mild, permanent and uniform in its of
fects, hut the preparation possesses also a tiipei
rior advantage to their Solutions, in not being
liable to decomposition or deterioration from
variable temperature or lung keeping t a sorb
oua objection to which the latter are exposed.
Finally, Morphine, not being the full repre
sentative of Opium, cannot aloue, and that in
artiflcial combmation too, produce all tho char*
acteristic ejects of 10 trmmphat a remedy, when
so many of its other valable principles'as Codein,
Narcein and Meconic Qcid art? excluded,
TESTIMONIALS.
From Dr. Chilton, the eminent Chemist of New
York, in proof of the accomplishment of this
discovery.
Dr. John H, McMunn having nndo known
to me tho process by which he prepares his
'.'Elixir ofOpium,” and wishing me to suite my
Opinion concerning it, I therefore sny, that the
process is in accordanco with well known
Chemical laws, and that the preparation must
contain all the valuable principles of Qnium,
without those which ire considered is deleteri
ous and useless.

Having witnessed the effects of Dr. J. D
McMunn'a Elixir ofOpium, we are of opinion
that it is a valuable preparation, and recommend
it to the patronage of Uio profession.

Dr. Mitchell's trials of the Elixir of Opium in
tho llospituls.
New York, February 8th, 1837,
Dr. J.B. .McMunn,—Dear Sir—I have made
repealed trials of your 'Elisir of Opium' in
the City and Marine Hospitals, and find it to
possess the snodyne and sedative powers of the
ordinary preparations of Opinm, without pro
ducing the excitmcnt, headiaclie, nausea, and
constipation, which in many cases render those
preprationj objectionable. Its effects ure more
permanent than those of Morphia. Yours, &c,
C. L. MITCHELL, 51. D.,
Resident Physician, New York Hospital
Those who take Opium and its ordinary prr
pa ratio in, cannot be ignorant of the fact that its
distressing nnd pernicious effects result from the
operation ofits deleterions principles, 'and that
the tremors hnguor and lassitude with which its
devotoes are afflicted, and for which they repeat
the dose to relieve, are sensations of its owner ea-
tien.
But in consequence of the exclusion of those
deleterious principles from the Elixir ofOpium
it is not liable to derange the functions of the
system, nor injure the constitution and general
health',hence its high superiority in all those cases,
in which ,the long continued and liberal use
of Opiates are indicated nnd necossary to allay
pain & spnfmodic action,& induce sleep 6f comi
posurc, as in cusesof fractures, burns or scalds,
cancerous ulcers, mid other painful affections.
And to those per sons, who fm necessity or vitia*
ted indulgence) have been accustomed to the
use of Opium, this preparation will afford a
gratifying substitute by which they may relieve
themselves fm the thraldom of pernicious & too
frequently inveterate habit.
Dirctionsfor using th? Elixir of Opium
To a child a month old j or younger, give from
half a drop to a drop; to a child uboutsix months
old, from 3 to 10 drops; and to adults, from 10
11 GO drops, (and evou double or treble that
much,if the pain and other symptiotns be severe
and urgent) mixtd in two or three tea spnonfti's
of water , according to tho size of the do<e. As
the administration of every medicine should bo
governed by its eflects.it is proper to begin with
thejsmallestdoieiand increase or repeat it stpro
per intervals until the desired effects aro pro,
duced*
O’JOHN B. McMUNN, of South Middle-
town. Orange County. New York, who is alone
the discoverer of the Elixir ofOpium, is the on
ly manufacturer of it. And none can be genu
ine without his name written in full on tho out
side label.
It is to be had ofthe principal Druggists and
Apothecaries in New York, Philadelphia, Balti
