continues to be confined to limited parcels—
principally of prime quality—which being scarce
we slightly advance our quotations. YVe now

no sales on plantation. Havana sugars are still

HAVRE, Ang. 31.—CefloM.—Government
having, by recent order in Council, reduced the
import duties on Sugars from onr Colonies,
which measure has imparted a vigorous impulse
to the trade with our West India possessions,
considerable purchases were immediately made
in Colton goods; the gathering ill of the har
vest being, on the otlior hand, nearly coinplei
ted, the manufacturing districts will now be
more actively employed, and the crops in gem
eral yielding satisfactorily, our uiaiket towards
the close or last week exhibited a better feeling,
and from Friday to Saturday 4000 bales United
Stales Cottons changed hands, without, liowe*
ver, any variation in prices. But on Alondny
the transactions wsra on a much more extern
sive scale, the sales amounting to 10,000 bales,
being the largest quantity taken in one day.—
The first operation was made by one house, and
consisted of 4200 bales New Orleans nnd Up*
land, middling to mid. fair, ex Georgia, Bar-
wick and Byron, at 107f 50, which wus a con
cession to the buyer in consideration ofimpor*
tanco. The other sales of that dHjr were at cur*
rent rates, and it was not until after more than
8000 bales had run ofF flint prices rallied und
experienced a slight advance. Tho sales of the
following day reached 2000 bales, and a rise
waa established of 2 a 3f on ordinary and mid*
dling descriptions, and 1 a 2f 011 other quid*
ities, with the inferior end fine grades, which
remained stationary. The middling sorts still
continue most in request fur home use, and or*
diuary kinds for transit. Since Wednesday,
however, the demand has subsided, and yesten
day the market closed without animation, but
after the/great excitement nt the beginning of
the week, this was nothing more thnn a natural
conseauence; piicesare nevertheless well sup*
S orted. The receipts during this month were
377 bales, and the deliveries 40,500 bales. The
sales of the week amounted to 39,750 bules, in*
cluding2700 American,600 Pernam,500 Egypt*
ian and 600 8urat, on speculation, and 9300
American, 500 Brazil and 300 Surat far export.
The import was 7351 bales. Tho American
short staples were quoted as follows, viz: ordi*
nary 6| a 64, mid. 6J a 7, fair 7f a 7$, good
fair 8 a 84. good to fine 84 ft 04d.
HAVRE, Sept. 1.— Cotton.— 1 Tho sales of
Cotton yesterday amounted to 2100 bales at a
further improvement of 1 a2 cents on middling
and ordinary descriptions. The transactions
would have been more considerable if holders
were willing to accept our current pricos,
