R. KERSHAW'S Tonic Mixture,for tlio
Fevoi nnd Ague. Doublo tho strength

Intnrmiltoiit Fever, or as it is more popular 1
ly called, Fever and Ague, or Chills and Fo-
ver*, is a fever composed of soveral distinct
paroxysms, with a porfect intermission, or
riod when no fever is presont, interposed
tween each. Each pnroxy*tn lias three stages,
which successively follow each other with com
siderable regularity, namely, a cold stage, a hot
stage, and finally, a sweating stage, which ter*
tninntes the paroxysm.
Previous^ lo an attack, a feeling of languor
and debility is experienced, with sluggishness
in motion and somo uneasiness in attempting to
move. The face and extremities become pale;
tho nails of a leaden or livid color, the features
shrunk, and the skin appears as if contracted by
cold; a feeling of oddness comes on the back,
resembling often a stream ofcold water running
down it, and soon extends over the wholo body,
(though at this time the akin of the patient will
fool ivnrm to another poison) the sensation of
coldness soon increases to a tremor, and this to
rigour* and shivering.
Tho above symptoms, which nro those oftho
cold stage, vary indifferent individuals, being
very slight in some; in others, very sovero.—•
They uto generally more sovoro in tho old nnd
debilitated, than in the young nnd strong, nnd
last from a few minutes to many hours. After
u time, differing in almost every case, the chill*
ness seems to abate, or to nltcrnato with slight
flushes of heat—these soon give place to contin
ued and increased heat of tho skin: then follows
al) the symptoms ol’fever. Alter an uncertain
period tho symptoms abate, a sweat now grad
ually breaks out. aud soon become* profuse—
when using tho mixture, nil painful symptoms
disappear, the skin becomes cool nnd the patient
gradually better until the paroxysm pnssos en
tirely off. All fevers marked by u distinct chill,
followed by fever nnd sweating, nnd termina
ting in a more or less perfect remission of all the
symptoms, the ague occurring at tolerably regi
nlar intervals, are included in the class of inter
mittonts.
As Ague and Fever generally 'originate in
places contiguou* to marshy nnd innudnted
ground, euro should he taken not to bo exposed
more than necessary, eithor to the bent of the
sun, or in the open air after sun down.
