Tho Elixir ofOpium is not only superior to
tho artificial compounds of Morphine, in its be*
ing moie mild, permanent and uniform in its ef
fects, but the preparation possesses also a sujie*
ii«»r advantage to their Solutions, in not being
liable to decomposition or deterioration from
variable temperature or long keeping: a seri*
ous objection to which the latter are exposed.
Finally, Morphine, not being the full repre
sentative of Opium, cannot alum*, and that in

tween each. Each paroxysm has three stages,
which successively follow each other with com
sidernble regularity, tmmuly, a cold *tngo, a hot
stage, and finally, a sweating stage, which ter
minates iho paroxysm.
Previously to an attack, a feeling of languor
and dehiliiy i* experienced, with slnggishnnis
in motion nnd some unensiiiess in attempting to
move. The face nml extremities become pale;
tho nails of a leaden nr livid color, the fentnres
shrunk, and thu skin appears us if contracted by
cold: a feeling ofc lduesB comes ou tho back,
rortombling niton n stream of cold water running
dawn it, and %>n extend* over tho whole body,
(though at this time the skin or the patient will
feel warm to another poison) llio sensation of
coldness soon increases lo a tremor, and this to
rigours and shivering.
The above symptom*, which nro those oflho
cold stage, vary in different individuals, being
very slight in some; in other*, vory severe.—
They uio generally more sovero in llio old and
clobilitntcd, tlian in tho yoiiug und strong, und
Iasi from a few minutes to many hours. After
a time, differing in almost overy cane, the chill’
lies* seems to uhute.or to ulteruato will) slight
flushes of heat—these soon givo place tocontin*
ued and increased heat of the skin: then follows
nil tho symptoms of fever. After an nncoriniii
period the symptoms nbalo, a sweat now grad
ually breaks out. aud soon becomes profuse—
when using tho mixture, ull painful symptoms
disappear,the skin becomes cool and the patient
gradually better until tho paroxysm passes en
tirely off. All fevers marked by u distinct chill,
followed by fever nnd sweating, nnd termina
ting in a more or less porfoct remission of nil tho
symptom*, tho nguo occurring at tolerably regi
nlar intervals, aro included iu tho clans of inter
mittnnts. * '•
As Ague and Fever generally ’originate in
places contiguous to marshy aud inundated
ground, care should ho tnken not to bo oxposod
more than necessary, either lo the heat of iho
sun, or in the open air after sun down.
