The Elixir ofOpium is not only superior to
tho artificial compounds of Morphine, in its be*
ing mote mild, permanent and iiiiifoim ill its ef
fects, hut the preparation possewes also a eupe»
ri »r advantage to their Solutions, in not being
liable to decomposition or deteriorntiun from
variable temperature or long keeping: a sorb
oils objection to which the latter are exposed.
Finally, Morphine, not being the full repre
sentative of Opium, cannot alone, and that in
artificial combination too, produce all tho chat*
acierislic effect* of so triumphant romedy. when
so many of its oilier vnlnhle principles’as Codein,

TESTIMONIALS.
From Dr. Cliilion, the eminent Choinistof Now
York, in proof of tho accomplishment of this
discovery.
Dr. John B. McMiinn having made known
to me tho process by which ho prepares his
“Elixir of Opium,” and wishing mo to state my
opinion concerning it, I therefore say, that the
6 recess is in accardnnco with well known
liemical laws, and that the preparation must
contain all the valuable principles of Opium,
without those which aro considered as deleteri
ous and useless.

Having witnessed tho effects of Dr. J. B.

that it is a valuable preparation, and recommend
it to the patronage of the profession.

New York. February 8th, 1837.
Dr. J. B. McMunn,—Dear Sir—I have made
repealed (rials of your ‘Elixir of Opium’ in
the City and Marino Hospitals, and find it lo
possess the anodyne mid sudntive powers nftlie
ordinary preparations of Opium, without pro-
ducing-the oxcitruent, Irendiaclie, nausea, and
constipation, which in many case* render those
preprntions objectionable. Its effects are more
permanent than those of Morphia. Yours, Ate.
C. L. MITCHELL. M. D.,
Resident Physician, New York Hospital
Those who take Opium and its ordinary prci
partitions, cannot be ignoruittof the fact that its
distressing and pernicious effects result from tho
operation ofit* deleterious principles, and that
the tremors languor and lassitude with which its
devotees are atllicted, and for which they repeat
the dose tottiliovo.aiaier.sations of iUowner ea.
lion.
But in consequence oftlio exclusion of ihoso
deleterious principles from the Elixir of Opium
it is not liable to dernngo the functions oftlio
system, nor injure the constitution and general
henhh;hence it* high superiority in nil those cases,
in which the long continued and liberul use
of Opiates are indicated and necessary to allay
pain A spasmodic action,At induce sleep com
posure, as in cases of fractures, burns or scalds,
cancerous ulcers, and other painful afibciions.
And lo those persons.who fin necessity or vitia
ted in-Julgencc| have been accustomed to the
use of Opium, this preparation will afford a
gratifying subutitnte by which they may reliove
themselves fin the thraldom of pernicious A too
frequently inveterate habit.
Dirciionsfor using the Elixir of Opium
To a child a mouth old, or younger, give from
half a drop to a drop; to u child about six months
old, from 3 to 10 drops; and to adults, from 10
to 60 drops, (and even double or treble that
much,if the pain and other symptinm* be sevnrn
and urgent) mitedi ii (wo or throo tea spoonfuls
of water , according to the size of the doso. As
the administration of every medicine should be
governed by its effects.it n proper to begin with

U. KERSHAW’S Tonic Mixture.for tho
Fever and Ague. Double the strength
of nny other oftlio Tonic Mixture*.
Inlormittont Fever, or as it is more popular 1
ly called, Fever and Ague, or Chill* nnd Fo
vor*, is a fever compiled of several distinct
paroxysms, with ■ perfect intermission, or pi
nod when no fever is present, interposed be
tween each. Each paroxysm has three stages,
which successively follow each other with com
siderablo regularity, namely, a cold stage, a hot
stage, uud finally, a sweating stago, which tar*
minute* the paroxysm.
Previously lomu attack, a feeling of languor
nnd debiliiy is experienced, with sluggishness
in motion mid some uneasiness in attempting to
move. Tho fuco and extremities become pale;
tho nnils of n tendon or livid color, the featuros
shrunk, nnd the skin appears as if contracted by
cold: a feeling of coldness cornea on the back,
resembling ofton u stream ofcold water running
down it, and soon extend* over tho whole body
(though at this lime the skin ofthe patient wil
Teel warm to another poison) the sensation of
coldness soon increases to a tremor, nnd this to
rigours nndshivering.
The above symptom*, which nro those of tho
cold stage, vary in different individuals, being
very slight in some; in others, very severe.—
They ato generally more sevore in the old and
debilitated, than in Ihe young and strong, and
Inst from a few minutes to many hour*. After
a time, differing in almost overy enso, the chill*
nessseoms to abate, or to altcrnnto with slight
flushes of heat—these soon give place tocoutin-
uednnd increased bent ofthe skim thou follows
ail the symptoms of fever. After an uncertain
period the symptoms abate, a sweat now grad
ually breaks out, mid soon becomes profuse—
when using the mixture, all painful symptoms
disappear, the skin becomes cool and ihe patient
gradually better until tho paroxysm passes on-
tireiy off. All fever* mnrkod by a distinct chill,
followed by fever and sweating, and termina
ting in a moro or less perfect remission of all the
symptoms, the ague occurring at tolerably regi
ular intervals, aro included in the class of inter
mutants.
As Ague and Fever generally 'originnto in
places contiguous to innr-liy and inundated
ground, care should bp taken not to bo exposed
more than necessary, eithor to the heat of the
sun, or in the open air oftor sun down.
