Fever and Ague. Double the strength

Intermittent Fever, or as it is more popular*
ly called, Fovcr nnd Aguo, or Chills and Fo*
vers, is a fuver composed of anvnral distinct
paroxysms, with a perfect intermission, or
riod when no fever is present, interposed
tween each. Each paroxysm has three stages,
which successively follow each other with com
siderabln regularity, namely, a cold stage, a hot
stage, and finally, a sweating stage, which tor*
initiates the paroxysm.
Previously to an nttnek, a feeling of languor
and debility i* experienced, with sluggishness
in motion nnd some uneasiness in attempting to
move. The face and extremities become pale;
the nails of a leaden or livid color, the features
shrunk, nnd tho skin nppenrs as if contracted by
cold: a fueling ofc Idnuss comes on the back,
resembling oflon a stream ofcold wator running
down it, and soon extends over tho whole body
(though at this timo the skin of the patient wil
fool warm to another poison) the sensation of
coldness soon increases to a tremor, and this to
rigours and shivering.
The above symptoms, which nro thoso oftho
cold stage, vary in different individuals, being
very slight in some; iu others,- very sovoro.-—
They uto generally more severe in the old and
debilitated, thnu in the young and strong, and
last from n few minutes to many hours. After
a time, differing in almost every case, the chill*
nous seems to abate, or to alternate with slight
flushes of heal—these soon give place to coinin'
tied and increased heat ofthe skin: then follows
all tho svmptoms of fuvor. After an uncertain
period the symptoms abate, a sweat now grad*
uidly breaks out, mid soon becomes profuse—
when using tho mixturo, all painful symptoms
disappear, the skin becomes cool and the pntient
gradually better until the paroxysm passesen*
tirely ofT. All fevers marked by u distinct chill,
followed by fever and swenting, nnd termina
ting in a more or less perfect remission of oil the
symptoms, tho ague occurring at tolerably reg
nlar intervals, are included in tho class of it
mUtants.
As Ague and Fever generally •originate in
places contiguous to marshy and innudated
ground, caro should be taken not to be exposed
more than necessary, either to the heat of the
sun, or in the open uir after sun down.
