fair Rosamond, or the Digs of King Henry
the 3d—by Th >mas Millkii.—This is a tale of
chivaliy and romance, in the time of Henry the

readers even of ballads who have not heard
of Rosamond’s bower, which indeed wss a tow.
cr and nothing less nor more, constructed to
protect the fair inmate from her infuriate rival,
the legitimate Queen. Asa picture of ancient
manners and nsages, this tale maintains a very
high rank. Asa mere tale of deep interest, it is
perhaps not so well sustained, as Royston
Gower; but no one can lay it down after com.

destined to be one of the fust novelists of his
dav, tnaugte the criticisms of the venal and
corrupt press of England, where almost every
thing in the critical world isboughtund sold like

work is a calm and dispassionate defence of the
author, from sundry attacks oftha aristocratic
journals, in which he give* them some home

NEIV JERSEY ELECTION.
THK WUIOS VICTORIoV*.
This, though but an Election for State offi
ears, was one of great importance on account of
ibu ciforts made by the Administration to take
the Stale, so ns to give her late candidates for
Congress a certificate of election, and thus to
pul litem into the House of Representatives,
with the Whig members ol the Slate, to vols for
Spsaker. We also see that the Stats last year,
the polls being purged of illegal end fraudulent
voters, expressed its voice deliberately, and now
confirms it.
