A gentleman who has travelled quite extensive
ly over the cotton growing region during the
present auanoii, give* it a* In* opinion, former!
upon accurate personal oh ervatnui that the
crop of 1830 Will be one third shorter tinm the
crop of 18!%. The cause* assigned for this
deficiency nio, first a protracted drought in the
spring that wa* soverely lelt through the wimle
South. Then the rain* which succeeded the
drought, fell in such torrent* as to cause nimiv
of_ the forms to drop. Tlio worm* also uhou't
•hi* period did vast injury iu many pan* of
tho country. If tim I nter part of the »ca>
son had proved propitious, the harvest
might still have been an avenge one; hut
the drought,on by equalled by tho dry spell of the
spring, lias, until within a few day* nt leant,
pervaded tho Month, causing the weed to shod
not only tho form*, hut the young bolls also. As
a dry season is favorable to cotton in Louisiana,
whero the laud is chiefly alluvial and inojat, the
product hero may no* fall much short—hut iu
every other state (ho deficiency will be ns groat
