ANOTHER FIRE IN MOHILE!
The PUntere Journal of the Hilt iust. con

flsgrations that base lard waste that city within
a week, by adding another item to the fearful
■am.
On isluniint frera the yet burning ruins of
the morning’s tire, on Wednesday evening, we
set down to write the foregoing account, but
before we Imd concluded, the frightful alarm
again mug in our ears! About 7 o'clock on
Wednesday evening a wooden tenement on
Church street, between Claiborne and Franklin
streets, was discovered to be on fite. Thi a fi rn .
like the others, was the fiendish work of ittccii*
diaries; the building we are informed was vu’
cant The firs iupid<y communicated to the
adjacent houses, and swept round the sqnnro
to Government street Theatre, which,
with the handsome two story dwelling of,\lr.
G G, Henry, on the East, and several frame
buildings on both sides, were entirely burnt to
the ground. Tho fire crossed Franklin street,
and burnt a few small tenements, fencing, dec.
•n the West side of that street, hut extended no
further. Tho night waa culm, and the squares
in that part of the city were not closely built
upon, which contributed greatly to its being
confined to the block in wli.ch it originated.
The great width ofGovermnctJUtieei rsnderi
oil the houses on the North side comparatively
safe, the coats and fparks.however.fell in show
ers for a great distance round. The number
of buildings consumed by this file was about
12 or 15, and tlio loss probably near $20,000.

We are beset by the most fiendish and unrelent’
ing villains, and Heaven alone can determine
whether or no our calamities are to end here.
Our city is ruined.
NEW YORK,Oct. 12.
LATER FROM CHIN As
By the arrival of tho ship Panama, Captain
Benjamin, w# have advices from Canton to the
2d of June, and frera Macao to the 4th inclusive
—at which date the opium affair had reached
its local catastrophcjall that now remains is the
action of the British Government, which ws
•hall probably lave specific information by the
next steam packet.
The threatened proclamation ef Captain
Elliott, which was to werk such wonders—
“make Canton too hot for ail foreigners”—
had appeared, and like the other proclamations
of that official, proved much less for mid*
able in fulfilment that in proinira. H« left
Canton for Macao on the 24th May. accom*
pnniert by all the British residents, and by some
of other nations. All the foreign consuls had
aim protended to Macao.
The notice ol Copt. Elliott was issued on the
22nd of May. two day. before his departure
for Macao. It is not explicit, & in fact amounts
to littlo beyond a repetition of what is said in
his former proclamations—to wit, no confidence
is to be placed in tha Chinese government—
that the surrender of tho opium was compiil'
sory and unjust—that farther commercial in*
tercotirse with China must be at tho risk of
those engaging in it—and that British subjects,
before leaving the country must makeup sealed
statements or their claims, &c. As to the course
of the British government no moro distinct
intimation is given than the following:—
And he has once more to warn her Majesty’s
subjects, in anxious terms, that such sudden
and strong incisures as it may bn found necos.
sary to adopt on tho part of competent authritios
for the honor and interest of the British Crown,
cannot be prejudiced by their continued resi.
deuce in Canton, beyoud the period of his own
stay, upon their own responsibilities, in spile
of tha solemn injunctions of her Majesty’s of.
fleer.
Having thus removed him.ielfand his country
men from Canton, Captain Elliott chartered a
vessel, tho bark Ariel, to convey despatches to
England, by the way of Cossier. on tho R«d
Sea—to meet Wughoru’s overland mail—and
the Ariel sailed on the29ih, passing Augier on
the Gth of July.
The manner of Captain Elliott’s departure
is thus described in the Canton Register of
May 28tli:
Thei hour of II A. M. had been fixed by
Cuptoin Elliott for his departure, but the local
government, in order toeviuco every possible
mark of contempt for, and to cause everv
kind of petty annoyance to, the BritMi superiiii
tendent and tho axpellod of his countrymen
delayed/the depurture until 5 P. M.—Cap!
tain Eliott Imd already put off from the step*
of tho British consulate, when liowqua and
Mandarin Howqtia—ns lie is called, arrived;
audio prove to tiievo individuals tho superiori,
ty of f .reign amenity to the so much boasted
ceremonial politeness of tho Chiuoio. Captain
Elliott backed nis boat to tho steps, landed, and
received liowqua in the garden of tho consulate,
liowqua, we believe, mudo some lame excuses
for the delay.
On the 23d of Mayan address to Lord Pal.
merston was druwn up and signed by the re.
■idem British and pHrsee merchant/ setting
forth their grievances, giving a brief history of
the commissioner's proceedings, complimenting
Captain Elliott for the part he hid tukeif through*
or his condifionalinedge, that tho claims ul tht
lesi leut foreiguera for indemnification ie*
dreu should bo enforced by llte British govern.
The surrender if tho opium—20.283 chests
—was completed on the 21st of May. llti
uinnnsr of its dispesition was not yetdetennltisd
—whi ther to burn it, threw) it into the *oa, or
forwatd it all to Pekin—The latest ptopoeaiou
was to dig large pits, into which it wae to ba
thrown with quant, euff. of oil, salt, water und
oilier ingredients to make it liquid, and then lei
it run into thi river for the, benefit of the fishes.
As may bo supposed tho foreign bueiueii it
Canton was pretty much broken up f‘»r the
time, and tho few foreigners remaining were
chiefly Americans.
Tho prospect ofa renewal of trade wae very
doubtful, because tho Chinese authorities, not
sutished with the bond given by the resident
merchants stipulutiHg that thty would not deal
in opium, farther demanded a similar bon* from
the captain and consignuo of avery vessel that
•hould arrive, agreoiug to the confiscation of
veiael and cargo If any opium should be found
oa board and mat all parties connected with the
vessel should suffer death. On thie condition
foreign vessels were allowed to come up to
Whautpoa,but none had availed IhfeMuflflor
the permission. Indeed Captain Elliott,on the
19th of May.) ssued a formal notice, forbidding
the entrance of all British vessel* until he should
publish a decluratiien that it would ho enfe.
Liu<•,the commissioner,having so successfully
completed hit undertaking against the opium,
lud u..en promoted to the gnvorutnont of the
ptnvinces Chekeang and Keaugso. the eecond
of the empire in rank and importance.
In the meantime, however, a new •rouble had
sprung up in regard to tho measurement of for*
•ign vessel*. The commissioner Imd ordered
all the ships arriving with cargo to be inspected
by the sub-prefect, und their dimension*, ton
nage and draff of water to be reported; and
with 13 vessels lying at Macao this was done.—
But one American shin the I’cih-U-le (Robert
Fulton) made tail, and would not stay to be
measured; whereupon ensued a long series of
clear reports and special edicts; the substance of
which appears in the following extracts.
The ship Feilnta Ie, which refused to be mensi
tired, and presumed to sail away eastward, has
evidently done so lor evil. We Ituvo sent a
communication to the lloppo. that he convey
commands'to the Hong merchants not to trade
with her, but to hasten tier departureback to her
country. The said subiprefect. &c. will give
direct commands to the cruisers to take with
them linguists, and pilots, and nscartnin
« where Peih.tsde has gone; and finding
:k couvey to her the commands: that
having been unwilling to be measured, it is evi>
dent she has brought contraband goods, and has
darsd to show opposition: that, while orders
have been given for the others to enter the port
of Whampoa, she ie not allowedjjto trade, but
must tail back to her conntiy and not loiter
about. If she dares to sail to other places on
the high teas, where it is unlawful for her to go,
to form connexions with tho ships of Chinese
marauders, and traffic in opium, the ernizers
will all unite in attacking her, when repentance
will be toe late. As toon as any real trucea of
the said vessel are found, let the same be clearly
reported to u* by express

reason to believe an average autumu trade will
be dunv. Wools are rather easier to buy.—
Bnsiiiei* in the warehouses is pretty active, but
very general complaints of ecaicity of money
exist.
Rochdale Flannel Markxt, Monday.-—
There ie but little change to report in the uiur-
ket to-day, except that good* of a finer quality
have been more enquired after. Fer many
weeks past the demand has been chiefly for
coursu tl nmols, and thoee of a bolter quality
■oarcety uskod for. The prices remain the tame
as last week. The wool market is heavy and
firmer pricei.
Corrcependcnce of the New York Star.
Liverpool, Sept* 21,1839.
Poulelt Thompson embarked on board the
Pique this day week, and took with him Gen.
Jackson, who is locominand the forces. The
general opinion is that Minuets have heen
indisetoet, first in suspending Sir John Col*
borne, who unquestionably saved Canada
when Lord Durham ran away last year,
aud secondly, in sending Ponlett Thompson
out—the whole course of hi* public life—conn
mercisl and political, having been notoriously
in enmity to Cunada and its interest* The
excuse, too, that hi* ill health wonld not allow
him to represent Manchester.any longer as M.
P. sesiu* absurd, following hisacceptance of an
onerous office, in the most trying climate in the
world, at the worst season. To be sure, if he
should fail in Canada, this " ill health” will be
a fine pretence fur him to cut his stick and
cotne home. Puitleil Thompson seems to have
beeu chosen or Dogberry's principle of being
" the most desurllcs* man.
Sir John Celborue’s reception in England
will he a very brilliant oue. The Tortus will
play hint off, if they can, against the Melbourne
ministry; hut if he be the matt of sense they
take him for. he will carefully avoid tnixtnghim*
self up with party in ouy wny. Ho has fairly
won hi* peerage, and will be unwise to give
tho Whigs any pretext for withholding it, I
should not be surprised, should he bo ennobled,
if the Crown will granthima pension of £2000
a ynar to ••support the dignity of the peerage.”
A curious cane, not unlike that of liolam's, at
Nuwcus'lu, occurred iu Loudon last week, and
is the subject of enquiry aud coaversation even
now. It i* a case of alloged robbery and attempt
at murder, at the United Service Club liotiia.
On the night of Wednesday week, the house
was closed, as usual, under the inspection of
Mr. Fenn, the steward of the Club. He retired
to rest, and at 7 the next morning tho domestics
heard groans from his room and went in. They
found him on the floor, with his night clothes
torn and saturated with blood, and several
wounds on bta head and body. On tho doors,
to the outer one, were the marks of bloody fin-
gets. Tho cash box, containg £127, had been
opened with Femi’s own key. lie bad locked
all the doors on the inside, so if there had been
robbers, they mint have been hid in hie room
before ho retired to it. ills struggles and cries
were not heard. The matter remains involved
in tnysterv. and front a similarity to some parts
of Bol«m r s case, suspicions havo been excited
which may not be justified by the fact.
