DILMcMlJNN’5 ELIXIR OF
OPIUM.
This is a now chem*cal!preparation, containing
all. the valuable Medicinal qualities of Opium,
in n Natural statu of Combination, to the ex.
c'li'ion of its Noxious principles.
F ULL proportions of tho greatest number
oftlie noxious principles of Opium, are
contained iu Laudanum Paregoric Black.drop,
Deiinrcotized Laudanum Extract of Opium and
such other opiate preparations of this class lillln
erto made and to which nro justly attributed
those disagreeable eflbcts upon llio stomach mid
nervous system which so frequently follow their
opeiation. and limit their usefulness.
This Elixir mnv bo adopted in nil those cases
in which either Opium or its preparations arc
administered with the certainty of obtaining nil
their sedative anodyne and anli’fpasmodic eft
feet* without any of these disngreeablo conso*
<poncos of hoaduclie nausea vomiting coni
stipatton tremors.ond n tTniu of other unhappy
symptoms which are often as distressing as
those which it was applied to remove.
Tho Elixir ofOpium is not only superior to
the artificial compounds of Morphine, in its be'
ing moio mild permanent and uniform in its ef
fects hut the preparation possesses also a siipoi
tier ndvantago to their Solutions, in not being
liable to decomposition or deterioration from
variable tcniperatnro or long keeping: a seri>
ous objection to which the latter are exposed.
Finally, Morphine not being tho full repre
sentative of Opium cannot alone, and that in
artificial combination too, produce nil tho char*
acioristtc effects of so triumphal o remedy, when
so many of its other vnlnble principles'ns Codeiu,
Narceinnnd Moconio acid nro excluded.
TESTIMONIALS.
From Dr. Chilton, the eminent Chemist of Now
York, in proof of the accomplishment of this
discovery.
Dr. Juhii B. MciMunn having made known
to me tho process by which ho prepares his
"Elixir of Opium " and wishing mo to stato my
opinion concerning it I therefore say, that the
lirocess is in accordance with well known
Chemical laws and that the preparation must
contain all the valuable principles of Opium,
without thoio which are considered as deleteri
ous and useless.

Fever and Ague. Double the strength
of any other of tho Tonic Mixtures.
Intermittent Fever, or as it is moro rcjmlnr
ly called, Fever and Ague, or Chill*‘and Fe
ver*, is a fever composed of several distinct
paroxysms, with a perfect intermission, or
riod when no fever is present, intorposed
tween each. Each paroxysm lias three stages,
which successively follow each other with com
sidernblo regularity, namely, a cold so o, allot
stage, and finally, n sweating stage, which ter
minates le paroxysm.
Previously lo nn attack, a feoling of languor
nnd debility is experienced, with slug^isline n
in motion and some uneasiness in nUemntingto
move. The fuce rnd extremiti*: become pale;
tho nnils of a leaden or livid color, tho features
shrunk, and the skin nppaars as if contracted by
cold: a fooling of ci Illness comes on tho b.-ek,
resembling often a stream ofcold water running
down it, and soon extends over tho wliolo body,
(though r.t this timo the skin or ie paiiont will
feel warm to another person) the lensafion of
coldness soon incror"os to a tremor, nari this to
rigours nndshivoring.
The above symptoms, which rre those d’tho
cold stage, vary : n different individiirhs, being
very slight ill come; in others, very .overe.—
They uio generally more severe in the old and
debilitated, ban in ihe young and tlroug, and
lost from n few nf intes lo many hours. After
a timo, differing in almost overy c.iso, the chill*
nei-s C 'ems to abate, or to oltornato with slight
flushes of heat—these soon give piece (ocontm*
ued *d increased heat of the skin: thou follows
ull tho symptoms of fuvor. After m uncertain
period tho symptoms abate, a sweat now grad*
ually breaks out, nnd soon b'.crunoi profuse—
when using the mixture, all p.infill symptoms
disappear, the skin becomes cool and the pntient
gradually better until the paroxysm passos en
tirely oil. All fevers marked by n distinct chill,
followed by fever nnd swonting, nnd termina
ting in a moro or less perfect remission of all the
symptoms, tho ague occurring at tolorably regi
nlar intervals, are included in tho class of inter*
niittents.
As Aguo and Fever generally "originate in
places contiguous to marshy nnd iunndated
ground, care should ho taken not to bo exposed
more than necessary, either to the heat of tho
sun, or in the open air after sun down.
