paroxysms, with u perfect intermission, or ne*

tween each. Knob paroxysm has three stages,
which successively follow eucli other with com
side ruble regularity, namely, a cold stago, allot
siage, and finally, a sweating rage, which ter*
minutes the purox)sin.
Finviou-ly lo an attack, n feeling nf languor
and debility i* experienced, with sluggislnm—
in motion and some iineasiue** in attempting to
move. Tho face and extremities become pale;
llm nails of a leaden or livid color, tlm features
shrunk, ami the skin appeals as if contracted hy
celd: a feeling ofc blues* comes nil the back,
re-embling often u stream ofnold water running
down it. and soon extends over the whole body,
(though at this lime the skin of the patient will
fuel warm lo another peisou) the sensation of
coldness soon increases to u tremor, und tilts lo
rigours and shivering.
The above symptoms, winch nro those of tho
c<»Idstage, vary in different individuals, being
very slight in some; iu others, very sovere.—
Tliov aie generally more f-efure iu the <«ld nud
debilitated, than in tlm yunng and strong, and

a lime, differing in almost every case, the chili*
ness seems to abate, or to alternate with slight
flii-hes of heat—these soon give plane to cotitim

all tho symptom:? of fever. After an uncertain
period lho symptoms abate, n sweat uow grad
ually breaks out. and soon heroines profuse—
when using tlm mixture, ull painful symptoms
disappear.the skin becomes cool and tlm patient
gradually heller until the paroxysm passe*en
tirely off. All fevers marked hy a distinct chill
followed hy fever mid sweating, and tormina’
ling in a more or less porfact remission of ull the
symptoms, tlm ague occurring at tolerably reg*
•»lar intervals, are included in the class of inter 1
mittnnts.
