Intermittent Fovor, or as it is more popular
ly called, Fever and Ague, or Chills nnd Fe
vers, is a fovor composed of several distinct
paroxysms, with a perfect intermission, or pe*
riod when no fever it present, interposed be-
tween each. Each paroxysm has three stages,
which successively follow each other with com
siderablo regularity, namely, a cold st- ge, a hot
stage, and finally, n sweating tinge, which ter
minates the paroxysm.
Previously to nil attnok, a feeling of languor
and debility is experienced, with sluggishness
in motion and some uneasiness in attempting to
move. The face nnd extremities In-couto pule;
tlio nails of n leadon or livid color, tlio feuture*
shrunk, and the skin nppears ns if contracted by
cold: a fueling of c Id ness comes on tho back,
resembling often a stream ofcold water running
down it, und soon extends over the whole body,
( though ut this time tlm skin of the patient wil
fuel warm (o another poi8ou)tlie sensation of
coldness soon iucreares to a tremor, and litis to
rigours and shivering.
The above symptoms, which are those oftho
cold stage, vnry indifferent individuals, being
very slight in some; in others, very sovote.—
They are generally more severe in the old and
debilitated, than in tho young and strong, nnd
Inst front a few minutes lo many hours. After
a tune, differing in almost every ense, tho chill*
ness seems to abate, or to alternate with slight
flushes ofhnat—these soon give place to contin
ued nnd increased hoot of tho skin: thou follows
ull the symptoms of fever. After on uncoriaiu
period the symptoms abate, a sweat now grad
ually breaks out, oud soon becomes profuse—
when using tho mixture, all painful symptoms
disappear, the skin becomes cool and tho patient
gradually better until the paroxysm passes on
tirely off. All fevers marked hy u distinct chill,
followed by fever and sweating, and termina
ting in a more or less perfect remission of nil the
symptom*, the ague occurring nt tolerably regt
ulnr intervals, are included in tho class of inter
mitlnnts.
As Aguo and Fovor generally originnto in
places contiguous to marshy and inundated
ground, enre should bn taken not to be exposed
more than necessary, either to tho heat of the
smi, or in tho open air nftor sun down.
