Intermittent Fever, or as it is more popular'
ly called, Fever nnd Ague, or Chills nnd Fe
ver*, is a fever cotftpiMcd of several distinct'
paroxysms, with n perfect intermission, or
riod when no fever is present, interposed . _
tween oach. Each paroxysm has three stages,
which successively follow each other with coin
siderabln regularity, namely, a cold stage, a hot
singe, and finally, n sweating stage, which ter
minates the paroxysm.
Previously to an attack, it feeling of languor
and debility i* experienced, with aluggiulmnss
ill motion and somo uneasiness in attempting to
move. The face and extremities become pale;
the nail* of n tendon nr livid color, the features
shrunk, nnd the skin appear* ns if contracted by
cold: n fooling ofc Iduoss comes on liio back,
roftRinbling olinu a stream ofnold wutcr running
down it. nnd soon extend* over the whole body,
^though at this lime the skin of tlio patient wil
feel warm to nuother poison) tho sensation of
coldness *nou increases to a tremor, and this to
rigours nod shivering.
The above symptom*, winch nro those oftho
cold since, vnty indifferent individuals, bping
very slight in some; in others, very soveie.—
Thev mo generally more severe in the oh! and
debilitated, ilian in the young and strong, and
last from a few minutes to many hours. After
a timo, differing in almost overy ense, the chili'
ness seems to abate, or to alternate with slight
(lushes of heat—these soon give place tocontiu*
nod nnd increased beat oftbe skin: then follows
all the symptoms of fevor. After an uncertain
period tlio symptom* abate, a sweat now grad
ually breaks out. nud soon becomes profuso--
when using tlio tnixluro, all painful symptoms
disappear, the skin becomes cool and the patient
gradually bettor until tho paroxysm passosoii*
tirely off. All fevers marked by a distinct chill,
followed by fevor nnd sweating, and tormina
ling in a moro or less perfect remission of all tho
symptom*, tlio nguo occurring at tolerably regi
nlar intervals, aro included in the class of inter
niittnnts.
As Ague nnd Fever generally originate in
places contiguous to marshy and inundated
ground, care should bo taken not hi he oxposed
more than necessary, either to the heat of tlio
sun, or in the open nir after sun down.
