Intermittent Fever, or as it is innro popular*
ly called, Fever and Ague, nr Chills and Fe
ver*, is a fever composed of sevornl distinct
paroxysms, with u perfect intermission, or pe*
riod when no fovor is present, interposed be
tween each. Each pnroxystn has three stages,
which successively follow each other with com
sidurnhlo regularity, namely, a cold *tnao. njiot
stage, mid finally, n sweating stngo, which ter
minate* tho paroxysm.
Previously to un attack, n feeling nf languor
and debility i* experienced, with sluggishness
in motion and some uneasiness in attempting tu
move. Tho face und extremities become pnlo;
tho nails of n lendnn nr livid color, tho feature*
shrunk, nud the skin npponrs ns if contracted by
cold: a fouling nfc Iduess comes on tho back,
resembling often a stream ofcold wutor running
down it. nnd sour, extend* over (Im wluite body,
(though arthi* lime the skin of the patient will
feel warm to another poison) the aonsatioif of
coldness soon increase* to a tremor, nnd this to
rigours nnd shivering.
Tho above symptom.*, which are tlinso of lire
c«ld stage, yaiy in different individual*, bpiug
very slight in some; in other*, very severe.—
They mo generally more severe in the old and
debilitated, than in the young mid strong, and
last from a fe w minutes to many hours. After
a time, differing in almost every enso, the chill*
no** seems to abate, or to alternate with slight
flushes of heat—these soon give place toconiiu*
ued nud increased heat of the skin: then follows
all iho symptoms of fever. After nn uncertain
period the symptoms abate, a sweat now grad*
'tally break* out. nud soon become* profuse—
when using llio mixture, all painful symptoms
