Tho funoral procession o! tho Into Prof. Butler, who was shot recently in Louisville, Ky., by Mat- thow F. Ward, is said to have been tho largest ever known in that city. The statement of tho Delaware Gazette, that Mrs. Myra Gaines had effected a compromise with the pnrtics with whom she has so long been at luw, is denied by Mrs. G. who say?, “there is not a word of truth in tho Btory.” Murdoch, the tragedian, whilo playing Hamlet in Sacramento, fainted upon the stngo. Post of tho 10th says: “It is a fixed fact, that a compauy of capitalists, who arc now negotiating for a con solidation of tho Will’s Valley Railroad, with a central trunk, from Mobilo to Chattanooga, havo ready to be invested in tho manufacture of Rail road iron, two hundred thousand dollars, Tho work will bo begun, as soon as tho charter is ob tained ; and the roiling mills will be placed in iho centre of an extensive iron bed, and coal formation, immediately on the lino ofour road. Tho same pitpur, which wo may here remark is “great” on railroads in general, and tho Will’s Valley Road in especial, has tho following eloquent appeal, which wo presume is original, it being in the editorial column, without credit or quotation marks: Whether It run by my do>«r, or l»y his. Tho editor of a Whig paper in Medina, makes the following interesting announcement:— “Extreme modesty and dillidcnce forbid the men tion of our marriage, on Thursday last, to Miss Kate Ryan of this village. Consequently, we shall lot our friends find it out by tlieir wits. From Cuba.—Intelligent nnd well informed gen tlemen, being residents of Cuba, who arrived hero in tho steam ship Isabel, from Havana, totally discredit iho reports which have been so extensive ly disseminated in tho U. States, of a secret under standing between iho British and Spanish govern ments, for the introduction into that Island of an unlimited number of Africans ns apprentices, with a view to their becoming free, after a definite num ber of years. From the snmo source we arc given to understand that the importation of Coolies from China, is likely to prove an entire failure; and tho pnrtios who havo contracted with the Cuban authorities to introduce them, aro likely, instead of realizing a largo fortune by the undertaking, ns was expected, probably to be serious losers in tho end. Thu contract is un derstood to havo embraced an importation of six thousand—four thousand men, and two thousand women—a number of tho former bad been em barked, but n large portion of them died upon the voyage—not one ol tho latter, however, it is assort ed, has ever reached the island.—Charleston Cou rier of yesterday. John Mitchell.—'Thomas Francis Meagher yesterday morning received a letter from his friend, Mr. P. J. Smith, front Sun Francisco,'stating that John Mitchell and his family would leave for Now- Tho Supremo Court i« likely to engigo tho at* tontiun of tho Loglelituro rood. At tho tlmo it waa organized, tho (don prevailed that tho conve nience of partioa litigant required that tho Court should hold 1m sessions at points aocosslblo to all- For that purposo it was provided that it should sit si nine different places. Upv, Cobb truly rontorka In his moesago, that " experience has shown that this was a mistaken vlow of tho aubjeot, as tho par tioa soldom if ovoruttond the Court. Tholr attonu- anoo ia not noooasary.and they therefore atay away. No otto will question tho fact, that this migratory feature is attended with great Inoonvonlonco to tho members of tho Court. It this was tho only ob jection to it, it might bo bomo with, but It doprivos tho Court of tho advantages of consulting good li braries, which aro not to bo found nt many of tho points whero it is now hold." Gov. Cobb recom mends, therefore, that tho places for holding tho Court bo reduced to tho numbor (fivo) required by tho constitution. Looking to tho futuro perma nence of and usefulness of the Court, ho thinks it ad- visablo that tho constitution bo so amended as to authorizo its entire sittings nt tho scat of govern ment. Tho docket of tho Court could be so ar ranged for oach Judicial district as to onnblo coun sel to attend to their cases with as much conve nience nt Milledgovillo as at any other point. I Itopo tho Court will bo locutod at otto point, and a suitablo building provided ior its sessions, os well ns a full nnd choice library. No migratory, peripatetic tribunal, organized as |tlio Supremo Court now is, can over diachargo its duties satis factorily. Tho members of tho Court havo hardly time to glance at tho few authorities they may lay (heir hands upon, much less to mature their deci sions and lay down groat principles. I am glad to havo it in my power to state, that Mr. Miller’s bill, heretofore referred to, has been passed in tho Sonato, by a voto of 75 to 20. It provides that tho Constitution shull lie so changed as to fix tho per diem pay of members of tho Le gislature by law, and to limit tlieir pay to one-balf after the first fifty days of tho session. Should it receive tho sanction of tho House, wo may expect shorter sessions hcrcnltcr. Senate. Tho following now matter has been brought be fore (ho Senate this morning: By Mr. Miller of Richmond: A resolution to have 1000 copies of tho report of tho Board of Vis itors to the Marietta Military Institute, printed lor the use of the Senate, which was carried. This ins titution, I am glad to say, seems to bo growing in public favor. "" “ ~ k is quoted nt 8 Pacific Rail Road.—Texas Route.—Tho Aus- tin.(Tcxns) State Gazette announces tho arrival at that place of Gon. Rusk, and his exploring party. Wo copy in full tho account ol his trip:— Gen. Rusk was accompanied on his trip by two nt his sons, Benjamin L. and John C. Rusk, Col. M. T. Johnson, Joseph C. Harrison, Esq, editor of tho Nncogodchcs Chronicle, Cupt. Owon Shaw, of this city, and Jim Shaw, tho Delaware Chief, as guide. Wo nro indebted to Mr. Harrison for tlio follow ing particulars of tho expedition: Gen. Rusk and party left Nacogdoches on the 29th of August, on a tour of exploration, as our readers nro aware, of a route for tlio Pacific Rail road across tho country from tho Sabine and Red Rivor in tho direction of El Paso on tho Rio Grande, ns nearly »b might bo on tho lino of the 32d parallel. They have been out two months, nnd havo made a through exploration as far ns tho Colorado, upwards of two hundred miles nbovo hero in u northwestly direction. Tito route traveled by tho company wus from Nacogdoches by tho way of Henderson nnd Tyler lo Dallas; thcnco up tho Trinity on the west side to tho mouth of tho Cloar Fork nt Fort Worth; tlicnco up that stream to its hond arid across into (lie valley of tho Brazos, striking tho latter rivor at Fort Belknap about fir- teen miles above tlio junction of tho main Brazos with tho Clear Fork. On louving Bolknnp, thoir routo lay up tho Clear Fouk by way of Phantom Hill and out at tlio head of Cluar Fork, and thence in a southwesterly direction to Oak Croek, a tributary of tlio Colorado. From Oak Crook, iho party returned by tho way of Pecan Bayou and Fort Croatian to this city. Of tlio country through which tlio company passed within (ho settlements it is unnecessary to speak particularly ; but above, Gen. Rusk and .Mr. Harrison describe in the most glowing terms. For fertility of soil, smoothness of surface nnd beauty of scenery, tlio country through which they traveled is not to bo surpassed by any region of similar ex tent in Texas or elsewhere. Tlio spreading prairies, rolling valleys and level bottoms on the streams are aa rich as tho heart of man could desire, sur rounded with forests of post-oak limiter ol the best quality tlio whole distance—such timber ns will ho peculiarly adapted lo making superstructure nnd ties of a railroad. Everywhere water of the purest kind is abundant, und as a gazing country it is unsurpassed by any in tlio world. Notwithstanding “Old Bullion" asserted that a wolf could not mako a living on the Southern route, we assert with perfect confidence, from tho statement of Gen. Rusk ami those who accom panied him on the expedition, that a more produc tive sect ion of country can scarcely bo found ill tlio Union than the one in question. At Oak Creek, Gen. Rusk and party met a com pany from El Paso, who had explored carefully tho remainder of the route, mid reported that lor all tlio purposes of cheap andexpeditions construction of a. railroad, that portion of tho routo was equally as Jiivorublo us Ihe portion explored by Gen. Rusk. The return ol this party, all in excellent health is n source of joy to the citizens of tlio Stato general ly. Gen. Rusk is in the highest spirits in regard to our prospects lor securing tho Pacific road over tlio route ho lias just explored, lie says ho has enlist ed “for the war"—that is, until tho Pacific road is built through our Stato. llis exertions in behalf of this noble, this grand enterprise, entitle him to tlio appellation of "tho Father of tho Pacific rond.” ns well ns to the undying grntitudo of tho peoplo of Texas, and of tho South generally. Tho advantages of this routo to Texas, and tho importiinco of tho right sort of action on tho part of tho legislature at an early day of tho sossion, must bo obvious to overy ono; argument on tho subject would bo usoloss. Tho company snw three hands of tho Camnn- ches—olio under Sunoco, ono under Yellow-Wolf and one utidor Buffalo Mump. Thcso Indians were perfectly friendly. Tho pnrty gavo them beef and other presonts, nnd they promised to bring in tho woman nnd two boys taken prisoners recently by tlio Lipans.
