Gatomton and Monticbixo Railroad.—'Tliero ia now present in ihe city a delegation of gentle men from Jasper county, whoso object i» to ascer tain whether tho Central Rail mad Company ia willing to guarantee sevott per cent, upon the stock of tho propoaod Road from Gatonton to Monticcllo, provided the people of Jaspor will build the Road. In his last annual report to the Stockholders of tho Contral R. R. Company, President Cuyter oilers tho following remarks upon this subject: “It is the opinion of the Board that a Road from Monticcllo to Gatonton, throwing ns it would an increased business over tho Eatontonnnd Millcdgo* villa Roads, might prnvo incidentally rooumera- ing to this Company. Tho citizens ol Jasper, who seek the establishment of this lino, wore reudy to pay for a survey of tho route, and applied to this Company to aid them in procuring a competent Engineer for the purpose. Tho great demand for this class of professional nten prevented us from ohtaining an Engineer. Tho general character and features of tho country present no serious ob stacle to tne building of a Road, with lino and 5 rades, as good os the lino from Estonian to Gor* on.” Tho construction of such n Road would unques tionably bo of considerable advantage, not only to our present lines of railway, but to the business of Savannah. Jasper is one of tho most populous and wealthy counties in central Georgia, and any enterprise which 6ecks to direct its undo and travel over the Central Road to this city, cannot but ho a matter of interest to our people. Wo should ho glad thoreforo to know that the Central Company had guaranteed the seven percent, asked for, should it appear, as we havo no doubt it will, thru the pro- sent engagements of the Company will admit of it. Every link added to our chains of internal improve ment, only binds us closer to the great heart of tho State. Athenau;m.— 1 There was an overflowing house last ovowing at the Atbenamn), many of whom wore ladies; and the performances were spirited, and enthusiastically received. Tho Bullet-Troupe in tho verdict of last evening, may consider their success in our cityas in no manner questionable, their morits haye been decided upon with an emphasis of spplauso which cannot tail to assuro thorn that their every excellence is recognized and apprecia ted. Tho only drawback of tho evening was the, to us unaccountable omission, of the pas In Manola, a feature in tho bill which had attracted many persons to tho Athcmcum, who wero much disappointed by tho failure to give it; we. trust it will bo both promised nnd performed ere tho Troupe take their departure from our city—an event which is not oven to bo thought of, at this time. Tho elegant comedy “ Faint Heart ne’er won Fair Lady,” was judiciously introduced in tho even ing’s entertainment, and formed an agrccablo inter lude; wo need hardly sny that iu tho hands of Mr. and Mrs Crisp, it was most excellently rendered. This evening’s programme is a lino one, and wo hope to see as largo Hn audience prescut on tho oc casion, as greeted the Troupe on their first appear ance in Savannah. RAFFLEs.-Sovcral interesting ruffles are now on tho topis, as may be seen from our advertising columns. At the music store of Mr. G. 13. Mitchell, nnd at Mr. Haywood’s Crystal I’ulace, arc several hand* Bomo articles of tcrfu.oil paintings, etc., which are soon to fall to the lot oi some <>t those individuals who are willing to stand the hazard of the die. Wo have also seen a very lino collection ofinsevts which are to be raffled soon. Among them ore in sects virulent, and insects innocuous ; hugs that buzz, nnd beetles that bito ; bugs that crawl, and creep, and climb, and chirp; bugs that fly, and fuss, and sting, and stoal; bugs of all hues—bronze, and blue, and golden and green,-bugs mottled, speck led, streaked, striped and Japanned ; pumpkin bugs, and lady bugs, nnd Juno bugs; pretty bugs, and homely bugs, and “ horrid" bugs ; hugs in fine, of all sorts and descriptions, save two, viz: hod and hum-bugs, two species which aro so common now-a-daya they hnvo not been thought worthy of a place in this extensive collection. Tbo snvnnt by whom it was mado has very ingeniously arranged his prizes, in a neat glass caso. In the centre, impulcd upon the father of all pins, is a •' scvigouB” old fellow, with attontc on inch long ; and’marstmlled around in widening circles, are bis family of several hundred, each impaled in like manner, with their heads pointing to the centre.— Tho ** big bugs" aro arranged in eight long lines, radiating from contro to circumference, and they cut quito as bold a figure in the multitude, ns human thttlootlonotV, 8. His rulo was to carry tho war into Africa, nnd to live upon tho enemy; whereas it was tho wont of Cobb to levy contributions upon both friend and Too, un til his hunger was appeased—alter which ho did not care a button what became ol thorn. These two foxes ran a muck against each other in 1860,in which Roynurd tho Red was victorious by aomo 18,OW) geese and lambs. This set tho old Gray to thinking, and finally led him to form a com pact with Ids rival, whereby both of thorn agreed to put their heads together for tho destruction of tho Uuion fold. This compact was executed during tho summer just euded, and tho result was the elec tion of their boon companion Johnson, who forages through tho region of country lying betwoen the Oconee and Ocmulgeo rivers. When tho victory had been declared, tho lessor foxes with the two leaders and their head, came together at the seat of government for tho purposo of distributing the spoils, it so happened, (and it was n grout misfortune,) that both CM nnd Me• Donald duiined tho first choico, which was noither mure nor less than tho skin ol Mr. Dawson. 1 he battlo waxed hot between thomselvca and thoir respective friends ; indeed tho battlo ol tho hrogs and Mica in ancient fable, and the moro recent contest between tho Kilkenny cuts, was a mere circumstanco to it. A majority however, decided in favor of awarding tho skin to McDonald-, whoreupon Cobb vamosed to his old fastnesses in tho mountains. Tho day lor investing tho old gray with tho desired robes was Bet apart, nnd all tho necessary arrangements were made ; whou lo and behold ! somo of tho subaltern foxes in the Bervico of tho Red leader ronowed tho fight, and fi nally succeeded in defeating tho wholo ceremony. Their own leader’s tail having boon cut oil’, they determined that the caudal appendage of his ri- vul should undergo a similar mutilation. In the moantimo, Mr. Dawson was wido awako, The enemy being divided and confused, ho deter mined to take tho field at night, nnd tnako a bold stroko to save his scalp. Ho did so; and when the morning sun arose, it found him victorious, and Cobb and McDonald at his feet! Their skins, stretched upon a polo, now ornament tho Irout ol his dwelling. It is tho general impression now, that tho coun try will never bo harrassed ugain by thoso old foxes. Invasion of Cui»a and Kossuthian Interfer ence in Europe.—Most Washington correspond ents aro satisfied with one startling rumor lo give zest to a loiter. The correspondent of tho New York Tribune, writing under daiuoi Wednesday, announces two items of important intelligence, which wo give below, and to which our readers may attach whatdegreo of credibility they please: I havo .trustworthy information from N'ew Or leans to the cllect that a powerful filibuster expe dition is preparing against Cuba, und will sail some time before the middle el l'ebruary. U is In tended that tho entiro furco shall consist of some four thousand men, led by ofliccrs ol tried skill and bravery, with a General who guined laurels in Mexico at their head. Tho enlistments aro pro ceeding with every effort to keep tho matter strict ly private.* Each tnan is subject to the scrutiny ol the Order of tho Lone Star before being admitted, aud is required to lake an oath not to diyulge the secret. It is believed that at least ono member of the Cabinul is well aware of the movement. V\ falo the bulk of tho expedition will sail from Now Or leans, other cities will also send forth llicir quota to tho army of Manifest Destiny. It is expected that tho Creoles of Cuba will not leave these heroes in the lurch as they did thoso of Lopez, but will riso to support them nnd achievo their own emancipa tion. Frivnte advices have reached mo irotn London to the effect that Kossuth is earnestly preparing for the eventualities of a general European war. When tiie new steamship Golden Age was at Liverpool recently, Kossuth went down from London to see Mr. Howard, her owner, with a view to negotiuto for that splendid veaaol. lie wanted her u» go up tho Mediterranean, expecting that tho beginning ol the cntnclnsm would render necessary a revolution ary force in that quarter. For some days tho mat ter was kept in suspense, hut tho outbreak did not occur so soon us wus anticipated, and accordingly the Golden Ago went to California. The La Paz Filibusters.—Tho Mexican Gov ernment, it is said, will demand the punishment of the banditti engaged in tho marauding expedition against La Paz. It appears that after they mur dered seven Mexicans, und wounded many others, they lied. Gen. Hitchcock and tho various collec tors on tho Pacific have already received orders to arrest them wherever found. iWYORK, Deo. 1&. Tho Ubol oAio of Vty tarsus Bennett, was brought to a eloa* yosterday and the result was ad verse lo tho defendant, whom the jury dsoldod should pay tsn thousand dollars and coats, whtoh will amount to about aeventesn thousand dollar*. Bennett will oarry tho oaao up to tho Court of Ap peals, but I doubt If ho will bo ablo to ehango tho result materially. Six or tho jury flood out fur tho whole amount claimed by Fry—twenty thatwond— and six wero opposed to nny dnmngoa, and tho matter was finally compromised, Nobody sympa thises with Bunnelt, who has became so accustomed to libelling every body that happons to incur his displeasure, that ho has come to consider it his right to do so. Grooly—Ucnnolt’s deadliest ono- my—has a scorching editorial on the decision of tho Jury. 1 subjoin ttafollovring extracts, which aro among ths.bilturost things tho Philosopher ovor duliverod himself of: “ Itnmcmo nnd iinmorsurablo ns aro tho black guardism and infamy of tbo Satanic Press—infa mous ns it is to n proverb—ffs conduct toward Mr. E. Wo fool tbo pauper ism of tho dictionary—the marasmus of idioms— in all such efforts to describe them. We can un derstand the starving wretch, with tear-withered eyes, with willed check, with shrunken vitals, and almost pulseless heart, driven to tho Inst of crimes to get tne bread to save life. We can understand a Thug, or oven under certain circumstances a Burke; both belong to Pandemonium, but still they are comprehensible. But the creature who directs Tho Satanic, who revels iu wealth and libels—who umnsscs and slabs, and slabs and uinusscs—whoso whole lilb seems ttuido up at tho refuse ol depravi ty, is a mystery to us. Cause und effect seem warning here, and human nature stands aghast at a very Colossus of perversion, boasting that his legs rest on each hemisphere, and spread over a vast ocean.” " The tide Is now turned. Tho • ruffian has got his deserts. Tho low-mouthod, blatant, witless, brutal scoundrel is condemned—condemned, loo, by Tub Peoflr. Let not Inn sower-shoot roll its nastiness und tilth ovonho ‘'Codhsh Aristocracy”— as it has called ilium for fifteen yours, in scurvy diatribes—as the cause of his withering, blasting ’Condemnation. That sordid, noisy falsehood will not servo him.” A low notoriety-seekers held a “Mass Meeting’ in the Park lust night at which the Mayor und chief of Police were denounced for causing tho ar rest on fast Sunday of an itinerant preacher in tho streets, who it seems was haranguing against the Catholics. There were evident signs of a row whilo tho fellow was preaching, and henco tho Mayor deemed it advisable to havo him taken into custody, in order to prosorvo tho peace. Tire meet iug last night was very numerous and very enthu siastic. Addresses wero delivered by several per sons setting forth the intents and sentiments ol tbo meeting, in tho most untnistnkoablo manner. Tho speakers universally denounced tho Roman Catho lic church in tho most unbounded and implacable stylo. Allusions to Native Americanism and denuncia tions of the Roman Catholic Faith wero enthus iastically applauded. Thu itinerant above alluded to, a Mr. Parsons, wus ono of the speukors, and wus greeted with immense applause. Groans wero frequently given for His Honor tho Mayor, and some of tho assemblage were in favor of drafting resolutions requesting him to resign. Tho end of this rcligous excitement is not yet, and another meeting has boon called for next week. It was given out that Pursons will preach in tho same placo next Sunday from which ho was ar rested. Should this prove true, as wo sincerely trust it may not, it will involve n greater loss of life than has ever been known before on our coast, resulting from one wreck.
